It was such a pleasure to pop in to each classroom on Monday morning and see all the smiling faces welcoming me back. I would like to take the opportunity to formally thank Julie Ladd for doing such a great job in the Acting Principal role while I was away, and Sietske Penno for taking on the Assistant Principal role. Also a big thank you to all the other staff members who stepped up into various leadership roles during my absence. Although I was not feeling the best, it was definitely reassuring to know that the school was in such good hands while I was away. School Fair The fair committee have been busy organising the fair for term 4. Much work has gone into relaunching this community event with lots of new ideas and initiatives generated from our parent community. It is important that the proceeds from the fair are allocated to a school improvement project so that we can celebrate and appreciate the community effort and financial gains made. Do you have some ideas? Where would you like to see the money go? Please email the chair of the fair committee, Bec Soulsby, ([email protected]) with your suggestions. Also we will be having a range of new stalls and activities at the fair, some of which will include plant, secondhand clothing (both children and adult), uniform stall and book/games/cds/dvds stall. We are currently seeking donations of all of these goods, so if you're thinking of clearing out the cupboards in preparation for a spring clean we would love to have your items!. Donations can be left at the school office. New Payments Option for Families – Compass Pay We are currently trialling Compass Pay, which is a new payments option for families who would like to make payments online, by credit card. It is quicker than creating a direct credit or coming in to the office to pay by EFTPOS and reduces the need to have cash on hand to send to school for excursions and school sporting events that come up from time to time. Compass Pay enables families to give consent and pay for upcoming excursions, directly through the Compass portal, while you are logged in to the ‘Event’ on Compass. Compass Pay will not allow you to add consent without making a payment so, if you still wish to pay using one of our current formats (Eftpos, direct credit or cash) you will have to give consent separately by either email, phone or a note to the teacher. As we are trialling Compass Pay, at this stage, not all ‘Events’ will have this payment/ consent option. You will know if it is available for your child’s ‘Event’ once you have logged in to Compass. If you have any queries, please don’t hesitate to contact the office. Parent Opinion Survey Over the last two weeks our school invited parents to participate in an online Parent Opinion Survey. The Parent Opinion Survey is an annual survey offered by the Department of Education and Training and it is conducted amongst a sample of randomly selected parents. It is designed to assist schools in gaining an understanding of parent’s perceptions of school climate, student behaviour and student engagement. Our school will use the survey results to help inform and direct future school planning and improvement strategies. The survey results will be reported back to the school at the end of September. If you have received an invitation for the survey but have not completed it as yet, please do so as soon as possible - we would love your feedback! If you have lots you link to the survey, please contact the Office. Unexplained Absences Thank you to all the parents and guardians who have entering their child’s absence details on Compass or calling our absence line. Please continue to enter student absences on Compass or call the absence line 03 5439 5476 before 9.30am on the day your child will be away. A text message is sent out at 9.30am to notify parents if a child is not in class when the roll is marked. If your child arrives at school after 9.00am. Please ensure they call into the Office and collect a late arrival token. This ensures that their attendance will be entered correctly on the roll. Online Safety Social media poses a risk in many student's lives. With the constant development of computer technology, we need to ensure that we find out the potential dangers associated with new applications. Our goal is to inform parents of new developments to help support the safety of our students and wider community. The Carly Ryan Foundation has produced some excellent fact sheets for a range of apps (such as Fortnite, Tik Tok and Instagram) and have given permission for our school to share them publicly. The information is attached on Compass and all parents are encouraged to utilise this great resource. Kind Regards, Cindi Bruechert, Principal [email protected]

Its happening next week Wednesday August 14th!

Last year’s Lapathon was extremely successful in raising $13,000.00 for our school and we feel that with your

help, cooperation and support, this year’s Lapathon will be equally successful.

The information relating to this event is listed below. The Lapathon will be conducted on Wednesday August 14th at the oval at Strathfieldsaye Primary

School. (The course may be changed to around school buildings if the ground is wet.) Each student is required to walk, jog or run around the school oval to achieve as many laps as

possible in 1 hour. Due to the number of students we will be splitting our Lapathon into two groups: The emphasis this year, will be steering away from individual prizes and rather encouraging school spirit

and participation. There will however be a ribbon awarded to each member of the class who are the highest fundraisers and students who complete the most laps on the day.

Each student in the school will receive a Sponsorship Card with detailed information about the Lapathon.

When students seek sponsors, please show this information to the potential sponsor so that they gain a better understanding of the Lapathon and how it is conducted.

Children are also encouraged to come in sportswear for a gold coin donation towards this fundraiser. All sponsorship cards must be returned to the school with funds raised by Wednesday

September 4th.

Grades Prep, 1 & 2 12:00-1:00pm

Last week both the girls and boys football teams competed at the District competition. The boys did a great job securing 4 very big wins against Girton, Epsom, St. Monicas and Holy Rosary, 2 extremely tight losses to St. Francis and Camp Hill which were both decided by a few points and a larger loss to St. Therese’s who were the eventual winners. The girls footy team also peformed well, winning 2 our of the 5 games. Honourable mention to Jett G, Les C, Max P, Llogan M, Joe B and Ryder P, Tammeka C, Chloe R, Emma B, Molly M and Willow P.

Hi Everyone, Wakakirri is now only six weeks away. Mrs West and the backstage team have been busy creating our props and Michelle, Dee and the onstage team have finished learning the dance. Now it is time to start putting things together. The tickets for Wakakirri are now on sale and you can purchase them through https://www.bendigoregion.com.au/arts-culture-theatres/whats-on just scroll down until you see Wakakirri. If you are interested in purchasing the Wakakirri DVD or Wakakirri merchandise they are available through the Wakakirri Website https://www.wakakirri.com/mainsite/ then click on Shop. Now I'm sure you are starting to wonder what is required for costumes and props. All students are asked to wear clothing that they would wear to the beach: T-Shirts, Summer Dresses, Bathers and Shorts (please no bikini's remember it will be cold at Ulumbarra). Footwear can be Sneakers, Sandals or Bare Feet (not thongs as they are too difficult to dance in). Those students who have long hair will need to tie their hair back so that we can see their faces when they are on stage. When it comes to make up I would suggest that students wear some as the lights on stage do really wash your face out and make you look very pale. I would recommend wearing foundation, blush, eye liner, mascara and lipstick (pale peach or pink). Students will need to provide their own makeup but we can help you apply it on the night. For our props we need lots of rubbish. If you could each bring 2 or 3 items of rubbish that would really help. These items can be given to Michelle to store in the Music Room. We are specifically looking for chip packets, soft drink cans, biscuit boxes, sandwich bags etc. Please clean these out before bringing them to school. On the 19th August we will be going to Ulumbarra Theatre at 12:00pm for our Dress Rehearsal. At the Dress Rehearsal students will need to take their costumes and props but will not need to have make up done. Please consent to your child attending the rehearsal through Compass. Please also rerturn the permission form for taking part in Wakakirri. This is a requirement from the Wakakirri Team. If any parents are interested in helping out backstage with make up on the night please let me know. Kind Regards, Michelle Di Camillo

Students from Grade 5 and 6 attended the Bendigo chess tournament last week. Strathfieldsaye competed against 5 other schools, playing 7 rounds of chess throughout the day. Strathfieldsaye were runners up, coming second place for the tournament with several students winning medals. Ruby B, and EJ won highest individual points while James C, Harper F, Dale E, EJ and Aston H won highest team points for Strathfieldsaye. This tournament was a first for most of the students so the skill and effort was commendable.

Bendigo Senior Secondary College Confucius Classroom are running three Chinese classes for kids of different age groups and with different Chinese language levels. Please refer to the table below for more information. Exposing a child to a foreign language at an early age will result in much easier and better fluency than if they learn later in life. The Chinese class for kids aims to develop children's interest in the language and help them build skills in speaking, listening, reading and writing through fun

During the 1st week of term we celebrated Naidoc Week. Students learnt about Bungil the Eagle who is one of the Jarra totem animals. Students where asked to colour a hand print and stick it onto large wings. The finished Art work looks amazing. Come and stand in between the wings and feel the magistry of the Bunjil.!.

It has been a while since my last update and so much has happened! Thanks to Brad Leech and Brian King for constructing the new shed on the first day of the school holidays. It is fantastic and is now home to a growing number of gardening tools for the students to use.

The students have had the opportunity to plant their seedlings they grew during science in Term 2. We also had some seedlings donated by Purtill’s Nursery and planted them in the garden. We are now growing celery, garlic, beetroot, spinach, cabbage and cauliflower just to name a few! We are hoping to have some stone delivered soon and will continue to add to our garden area with more garden boxes. Our compost tumbler is in full swing, literally! We have used coffee grounds, fruit and vegetable scraps, autumn leaves and newspaper to make a lovely rich compost to add to the soil. We have also made worm towers for the middle of the wicking boxes. The concept of a worm tower is that the ‘tower’ is partially buried into the soil of the garden. Compostable waste can be dropped into the tower where worms enter through holes and can consume it. Hopefully we will have very healthy soil as a result.

Sadly, our garden still does not have a name! I will be choosing (along with many helpers) 3 fantastic possible

names and then we can start the voting! Keep a look out for more information soon.
