Curriculum – STUDENT LED CONFERENCES During the last week of Term 2, the students had the opportunity to share their learning journey with their families. The conferences were a great success, as students were able to discuss and reflect upon a variety of work samples from various curriculum areas. Through the conferences the students were able to identify their strengths and areas of improvement, which then enabled them to set goals for their future learning. Overall, the conferences enabled the parents to gain a clear insight into the kind of work their child is producing and offered them an opportunity to discuss with their child. Thank you to all staff members for making the conferences successful and for preparing your students. I would also like to thank all parents who attended the conferences and I hope that you gained an insight and better understanding of your child’s learning journey. We wish everyone a happy and healthy Term 3. Pam. NAIDOC WEEK- WE ALL STAND ON SACRED GROUND: Learn, Respect and Celebrate NAIDOC week celebrations are held across Australia each year to celebrate the history, culture and achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people. NAIDOC is celebrated not only in indigenous communities, but by all Australians. This week all grades will be acknowledging NAIDOC by informing students of the significance both culturally and historically. IPAD AND LAPTOP USE Just a reminder to all our families who are participating in the one to one ipad program that the school utilises safety software that is able to detect any form of inappropriate content accessed on the children’s laptop or ipad. The software we use is in operation 24hours and will alert our staff when inappropriate sites and language is used. Everyone signs an agreement on purchase and a reminder to all students and families, it may become necessary to withdraw the use of ipads/laptops if conditions are breeched. TERM 4 CHESS Dear Parents/carers, CHESS is to be introduced as an extra -curricular subject in Term 4. If you would like your child to participate please complete the form that will be distributed in a separate letter. attached. CHESS classes will be fully operational in Term 4. Simon Endre is travelling overseas in Term 3 hence the delay in beginning Term 4. We will be requesting $5.00 per lesson which will go towards the cost of the program and CHESS Master teaching the strategies and skills. This has not been formalised as yet so please advise either way if your child may be interested as places will be limited in Term 4. Any queries please speak to Pam or your child’s teacher. Thank you. ABSENCES When your child is absent or late to school we are required to present a reason for the absence to the Department of Education DET. You are welcome to write a note to the class teacher brought to school by your child on their return. There are other avenues you can use to inform us of your child’s absence. A phone call or an email to the school email, [email protected] . It is very important that children attend school daily except if they are unwell or in extreme circumstances. We know that every day at school counts! There are a few bugs around again and as winter approaches we can expect more. Our teachers also get sick from time to time and need time away. It is just as important that a teacher does not come to school sick, as it is for a child. Please explain to your child that this is part of life and the school will cover the grade internally or with a replacement teacher who will operate the teacher’s program. Thank you for your understanding.

ENROLMENT PLACES FOR 2018 The demand for places at Glenroy West PS and kindergarten is high. Enrolment forms are located on the school website or alternatively an enrolment form can be obtained from the school office. School Tours are conducted on Tuesday and Thursday from 9.15am. If these days are not suitable we can arrange an alternate day and time for your convenience. A personalised tour with the school principal Pam Streete can be arranged at your request. Please arrange a suitable day and time via the office staff with Anita or Rita.

EVERY DAY COUNTS- ATTENDANCE- IT’S NOT OK TO BE AWAY.EVERY DAY COUNTS We are presently reviewing our processes for daily attendance and ‘lateness.’ DID YOU KNOW YOUR CHILD’S BEST LEARNING TIME IS THE START OF THE SCHOOL DAY? THAT’S WHEN EVERY MINUTE COUNTS THE MOST! It is very important to receive notification from parents or guardians when children are absent from school as we have an accountability to the Department of Education. Please use the following methods to inform us and include your child’s name and grade, date and reason for the absence.

Phone in

Written note

Speak directly to the Classroom teacher. Teachers have a Duty of Care to call parents if a child is absent

more than 2 days.

Respond to text message

At Glenroy West Primary School we are committed to providing your child with an excellent education. The building blocks of an excellent education begins with all students coming to school each and every day. Regular school attendance is vital and missing school days can have a big impact on a child’s future. Missing one day a fortnight will equate to missing four full weeks by the end of the year. Each day a student misses school puts them behind and can affect their educational outcomes. Some of the reasons for student absence at GWPS

Staying home to celebrate a birthday

Going shopping

Looking after a sibling

Spending time with a relative

Extended weekends

Overseas travel

Dental and medical appointment

Illness

If for any reason your child must be absent from school, parents or guardians are required to provide written notification, stating the reason for their child’s absence. This information will be retained by the teacher and archived by the school. This is a DET requirement.
