Secondary School

Categorisation The Welsh Government has replaced the ‘banding’ of schools with a ‘National Model for the Categorisation of Schools’. It will

continue to drive improvement for learners, recognising those schools which raise standards from those that are not

improving quickly or consistently enough.

Schools will be categorised by colour and an arrow showing an upward or downward trend. The colours will signify the level

of support, challenge and intervention a school receives.

A school’s strengths and areas for improvement in standards, provision and leadership are identified during discussions with

schools throughout the year. These discussions are then used to decide on the most appropriate level of support for the

school.

A Green School will have the following characteristics:

Standards are high.

No groups of learners underperform.

School knows itself well and identifies

and implements its own priorities for

improvement.

Moving towards or sustaining excel-

lence.

Have the capacity to support other

schools.

A Yellow School will have the following characteristics:

Will know and understand most of

the areas in need of improvement.

Many aspects of the school’s perfor-

mance are self improving.

Bespoke challenge and support will

be given according to need.

An Amber School will have the following characteristics:

Does not know and understand all

areas in need of improvement.

Many aspects of the school’s perfor-

mance are not improving quickly

enough.

Bespoke challenge and intervention

will be given which is time limited.

Will be recognised as a school at risk

of causing concern.

A Red School will have the following characteristics:

Standards are poor.

Will require critical intervention.

Will be recognised as a school

causing concern.

Will lose autonomy and a more

directed approach to intervention

and support will be given.

Ysgol Dewi Sant is categorised

as a B YELLOW school for

2017/2018

School Overview

The table and graph show a trend in the performance of our Year 11 students over time.

The L1 (Level One) Threshold shows the percentage of our students who gained 5 GCSEs between A* and G, or equivalent

qualifications. The Level Two Threshold (L2) works the same way, but between the grades of A* to C. The measure, often

referred to as “L2 Threshold including”, reflects the percentage of students who gained 5 GCSE grades at A* to C, or equivalent

qualifications, that included both an English and Mathematics pass at Grade C or better. The dotted lines below shows the trend,

or direction of achievement over time whilst the solid lines show actual performance.

ERW Region Overview

This chart shows the performance of students at Ysgol Dewi

Sant against the other schools in Pembrokeshire using many

of the same criteria applied to Family comparisons. Whilst

we emphasise we are not comparing “like for like”, other

than by location, similar information can be obtained by using

the Welsh Government “My Local School” website. Here, all

schools in Pembrokeshire can be located, and a more

extensive list of comparisons can be made which go beyond

academic outcomes.

www.mylocalschool.wales.gov.uk

The above graph shows the L2i performance of secondary schools in Pembrokeshire and Carmarthenshire in 2017 modelled

against Free School Meal percentage. The percentage of FSM in a school is used by the Welsh Government as an indicator of

the degree of challenge that each school faces. This enables comparisons to be made between different schools. The line of

best fit shows a ‘nominal average’ performance. Those furthest above the line are in excess of this outcome, and those below

the line fall short of this modelled expectation.

Main line is ERW's regression line for 2017, dotted line is Wales' official line for 2016

(based on old L2+ regulations).

Family of Schools Overview

This bar chart compares

the Family of Schools

data for 2017.

The graph shows the

percentages of five A*

to C (L2 Threshold) and

A*-C (L2 Threshold -

including English and

Maths).

In 2009, the Welsh Government collated all school data to produce a document for each school called the ‘All Wales Core

Data Set’. To allow for school improvement, schools were grouped into ‘Families’ so that comparisons could be made and,

through collaborative endeavours, best practices could be shared. Our ‘Family’ includes 10 other schools who are deemed

to have similar contexts to ours, determined through a calculation based on the percentage of Free School Meals in the

school, the percentage of students on the Special Educational Needs Register and the percentage of students who live in

areas that are the most deprived in Wales. In 2016, we are seen as the 12th least challenged of our Family and, as such,

should have been amongst the highest performers, if not ,indeed the best.

The table below shows our school’s performance (as a percentage), compared to our family performance in 2017.
