NZ Certificate in Animal Care (Companion Animals) (Level 3) This 21 week, full time programme provides students with the skills, knowledge and attributes required to maintain the welfare of animals (specifically cats, dogs and rabbits) in a range of animal care roles in the companion animal sector. Students will learn about animal handling techniques, health and husbandry, hygiene and more.

Hours on Campus 9:00am-3:00pm, Monday-Friday during theory weeks 8:00am-4:00pm for work experience

Entry Requirements NCEA Level 1 or equivalent gained through tertiary study or relevant personal, practical, professional and/or educational experience, including literacy and numeracy competence equivalent to that specified above.

International Students Minimum IELTS (academic) score of 5.0 with no band lower than 5.0, or equivalent.

Programme Fee 2020 fees will be on the Animal Care pages on the WelTec website from September; as a guide, the 2019 fees were $3,293.00. These fees apply to NZ Citizens & Permanent Residents only.

Additional Costs Includes, but is not limited to, the following (all costs are approximate):

Important Notes MOJ Criminal Record CheckOur agreement with Wellington SPCA for work experience states that all applicants must complete a Ministry of Justice (MOJ) Criminal Record Check. This is standard practice for volunteers and employees in most industries; therefore you will be required to complete an MOJ check at the time of enrolling.

Programme Content Course Aim AS3001: Animal Welfare and Hygiene 15 Credits

To enable students to demonstrate understanding of: • animal welfare legislation, and codes of practice for companion animals • ethical principles and cultural perspectives related to working with

animals • animal facility and environmental hygiene, and zoonoses.

AC3002: Animal Health and Behaviour 15 Credits

To enable students to demonstrate and apply knowledge of companion animal health and behaviour in routine and emergency situations in an animal facility.

AC3003: Animal Handling 15 Credits

To enable students to handle and transport companion animals safely within and to an animal facility.

AC3004: Animal Anatomy, Physiology and Husbandry 25 Credits

To enable students to demonstrate and use knowledge and skills essential for maintaining companion animals in an animal facility in a positive state of welfare.

Theory To succeed in this programme, you will need to attend all scheduled on-campus classes, complete all your work experience hours and complete your self-directed learning (most of which is online in Moodle). The programme is largely classroom based, with theory to support practical application. You will be involved in practical lessons as well as regular self-directed learning, including group work, where you will undertake a variety of tasks such as research projects and case studies.

Work Experience Students must attend and complete 120 hours of off-site work experience at the SPCA in Newtown, Wellington. You will need to arrange your own travel to and from your work experience; we encourage students to carpool if possible. Work experience is timetabled on either a Monday, Wednesday or Friday from 8:00am-4:00pm; students will be advised which is their work experience day early in the programme. Please note if your work experience day falls on a Public Holiday, you will be required to attend. Please note that even though the work is enjoyable, some students may find some situations emotionally distressing, such as animals that have been abused, are injured or sick, or require euthanasia.

Career Opportunities Gradutes could be employed in a range of businesses associated with the care of animals: • Pet shop employee • Dog daycare worker • Kennel/cattery assistance • Animal groomer • Animal shetlers and welfare agencies

New Zealand Certificate in Animal Technology (Veterinary Nursing Assistant) (Level 5) This programme prepares students for employment as veterinary nursing assistants, by providing them with the skills, knowledge and attributes needed to help assist veterinarians and veterinary nurses in a companion animal practice.

Career Opportunities Graduates of this qualification may be employed as a Veterinary Nurse Assistant working with companion animals in an animal related facility and be able to: • Maintain animal health and husbandry of animals in a veterinary clinic care for hospitalised patients. • Assist in surgery preparation and anaesthesia. • Assist with routine diagnostic procedures.

Programme Overview The programme consists of seven compulsory courses, three at level 4 and four at level 5. Course Aim

VN4100 Introduction to Professional Practice 15 Credits

To enable students to demonstrate knowledge and skills essential for professional practice in veterinary practices.

BN4101 Animal Health and Husbandry 15 Credits

To enable students to demonstrate an understanding of animal health and husbandry and apply this while working with animals in an animal care facility.

VN4102 Reception and Client Services 15 Credits

To enable students to provide client and patient services in an animal care facility.

VN5100 Clinical Practice 20 Credits

To enable students to develop clinical practice, knowledge and skills, and use these while assisting the veterinary nurse or veterinarian.

VN5101 Diagnostics and Hospitalised Patient Care 20 Credits

To enable students to demonstrate knowledge of diagnostic and hospitalised patient procedures and practices by assisting with these in a veterinary clinic.

VN5102 Surgery Preparation and Anaesthesia 20 Credits

To enable students to develop and apply skills and techniques essential for assisting in surgery and with anaesthesia.

VN5103 Professional Practice 15 Credits

To enable students to demonstrate integration of knowledge, skills and behaviours through providing professional veterinary nursing assistance in a veterinary clinic.

• 40 hours (at least three days) in an animal care facility – arranged by us, for a Wednesday and Thursday in the second trimester, on a rotational basis.

• 200 hours in a veterinary clinic – to be arranged by students for Tuesdays; details to be confirmed on enrolment.

You will need to arrange your own travel to and from your work placements; we encourage students to carpool if possible. Please note that even though the work is enjoyable, some students may find some situations emotionally distressing, such as animals that have been abused, are injured or sick, or require euthanasia.

Entry Requirements 60 credits at NCEA Level 2 with at least 12 credits in Level 2 English, 12 credits in Level 1 Maths and 12 credits of relevant science at Level 1, or equivalent tertiary study. International Students

A minimum IELTS (Academic) score of 6.0 with no band score lower than 5.5, or equivalent. Other

Applicants must:

• be a minimum of 18 years of age at the commencement of the programme • provide a curriculum vitae and two references • provide a medical declaration indicating there is no evidence of a medical condition that will impact

on their ability to practice safely as a veterinary nurse assistant • have at least three days of work experience and/or observation of animals within a veterinary clinic • undergo a police check at the time of entry into the programme. In the event of an adverse police

report, entry into the programme will be at the discretion of the Head of School. In exceptional circumstances the requirement for a police check may be waived by the Head of School

Applicants must attend an interview which is used to discuss:

• preparedness and commitment to study • identification of strengths and weaknesses related to study • good character and aptitude for working with animals and the public Where it is suggested that the applicant is not ready to undertake the programme they will be supported to explore alternative study pathways.

2. Before you start your online application, you will need to have the following documentation available to upload when requested:

• Completed ‘Application for Health & Social Service Programmes’ * • Referee reports * (refer to step 3 below) • Verified ID • Verified official transcripts • Curriculum Vitae • Letter confirming you have completed three days’ work experience and/or observation of

animals within a veterinary clinic and confirmation from the clinic that they will be able to provide a work placement for you on Tuesdays (dates to be confirmed).

* These additional forms are available on the programme webpage. 3. Give the referee reports to two people who are willing to be your referees. Ask them to complete

the forms and either return to yourself (so you can upload with your application), or scan and email to [email protected] within 10 days. Please note applications will not be processed until both referee reports have been received.

Info for both programmes: Student Support At WelTec, we are committed to our students' success and therefore offer a range of services to meet the learning needs of individual students. These include peer tutoring, workshops and study skills sessions on a variety of topics, and online material are available. To increase our students' chances of success, we provide support for our students in other ways such as financial advice, counselling, childcare facilities, and a service for students who have a disability, illness, or health problems that may interfere with their studies. Māori and Pacific liaison staff are available to provide pastoral care for Māori and Pacific students, and information on alternative support networks and grants. Some students may struggle with the reading, writing and mathematical elements of the programme. We have a Learning Support and Mentor team that can aid students who are finding these aspects challenging. It is best if we can identify the need for this support before you commence studying. As part of your application process you may be asked to come in for a learning conversation to assess whether you are study ready. You could be advised of alternative pathways to reach your goals.

Foundation Studies WelTec and Whitireia offer a choice of programmes to assist you to gain skills and knowledge in preparation for a variety of education or employment pathways. Programmes are offered at different levels, to provide you with a pathway suitable to your background. Within the programmes, different strands are also available to support you to go onto further education or employment in a specific field.
