What to expectWe educate the artists and designers of the future. We expect you to take charge of that future yourself. This means taking initiative and delivering a high standard of work. During your time with us you will find out you can always do better, or do things differently. You will continually explore the boundaries of what you can do and want to achieve. You are not alone in this. Our lecturers run their own practice. Not only do we teach you your craft, we also make you aware of what artistic practice means. At the same time you will create a network of useful contacts for the future. This network includes your lecturers, your fellow students and all those guest lecturers we invite. This valuable network of contacts will be useful after you graduate.

Your place in the worldWhatever bachelor’s programme you prefer, art remains the heart of your education. Art, in all its forms, profoundly influences society. Art is always in flux, it changes all the time in capricious and unpredictable ways. As an artist you pose questions, respond to the world and put matters in motion. You have a unique talent and original artistic notion. By finding a balance between your personal growth as an artist and your social role as a person you will become the artist you can be. We offer you knowledge and skills, coaching and development, facilities and the opportunity to show the world who you are. As a student you can take part in exciting art projects, like our own Energize Festival, the Worteldagen and the Jonge Harten Festival. You can also take part in exhibitions, inside as well as outside the academy.

Making is doing and thinkingAt our academy you will learn to explore your view of the world, capturing your ideas in words and images. You will get to know and feel what kind of artist you are. You will learn to show your artistic work to the outside world. Making and thinking are intertwined. You reflect on everything you make, before you start, during the process and when you are done. What is it you want to express? How does your imagination relate to the world? What is it you want to tell society? You reflect on the world and your role in society with an open mind. This is where knowledge, materialisation and imagination come together. You are open to the extraordinary, to exploration. You will develop your artistic talent by using your imagination.

During the main phase you will choose your own path. This can be a path focused on one of the following media forms: Graphic & Interaction Design, Illustration & Animation Design, Interior Architecture & Design, Time Based Design or Product Design. You can also choose your own route, independent of a certain medium, and you will be able to combine various profiles. In your fourth year you will carry out a joint final exam assignment as well as an independent exam project.

‘Nothing beats Groningen’ isn’t a meaningless slogan: just ask

any of your friends or acquaintances already studying in

Groningen. Students love it: Groningen has everything that

makes a city fun, interesting and exciting.

It has interesting architecture, parks and lakes, fantastic museums and loads of festivals. The festival season starts in January with Eurosonic/Noorderslag and ends with the Peter the Great Festival and Noorderzon in late summer. Many internationally renowned artists such as U2, Pearl Jam and Nirvana played in the various theatres and concert buildings in the city before they became world famous.

Lots to doArt and culture, alongside the various museums, can be found around every corner in the city. The city boasts numerous old churches and towers. A host of different varieties of artistic expression, such as ceramics, paintings, prints and installations can be found in the city’s galleries. There are around 400 sculptures and other works of art in the city. Art can literally be found on the street. Groningen has various locations available for exhibitions allowing you the opportunity to display your work to the public.

Art and culture in Groningen and the north of the Netherlands

City of TalentIt is clear that the north of the Netherlands offers plenty of room for creative talent. We’ve bundled all our strengths and those of other northern institutions together under one name: City of Talent. Would you like to know more about Groningen, our university of applied sciences or City of Talent? Please visit www.hanzegroningen.eu or go towww.cityoftalent.nl/en.

LeeuwardenMinerva Academy of Pop Culture is established in Leeuwarden. In Leeuwarden you can attend festivals such as the Media Art Festival Friesland, the Northern Film Festival and the Freeze Festival. Nearby are Oerol (Terschelling) and Into the Great Wide Open (Vlieland). Leeuwarden also has interesting museums, galleries, halls and pubs with bands playing live. The former prison Blokhuispoort is the domain of young creatives and there are plenty of theatres hosting dance theatre and cabaret. At De Harmonie and Poppodium Romein, Popular Culture students organise regular concerts and festivals, together with students from other programmes. Leeuwarden received the title Cultural Capital of Europe 2018, on September, 2013.

Why Groningen?… because in Groningen you have access to a valuable

international network of museums, galleries, art houses,

festivals, events, theatres, art cinemas, cultural institutions,

master’s degrees and universities.

… because you want to forge relationships and are seeking

a place you can thrive in, you want to meet other like-

minded, interested people, possibly have a meal together

after a hard day’s work and get together to exchange

knowledge, experience and ideas.

… because you get to study in a very culturally diverse

environment. Visual and media artists, designers and

theatre designers from different countries in Europe

and the rest of the world, come to Groningen to study

different forms of art. This cultural mix is a great source of

inspiration.

… because Groningen is a great city! The city has a vibrant

artistic and cultural life, and an extensive transport network

with fast, direct links to arts centres, theatres, museums,

galleries and creative industries. It’s a city with ample

opportunities to promote, publicise or present yourself on

a local and international platform.

… because Groningen offers you the room to grow, and

transform the way you live or work.

AdmissionYou can apply online through Studielink (www.studielink.nl). After applying you will receive an invitation for an admission test. This assessment includes a home assignment and an academic assignment. The cost of an admission test is € 25.

RequirementsTo qualify for our bachelor’s programmes students need to have completed one of the following educational routes: secondary education, higher general secondary education, intermediate vocational education or a foundation course in higher professional education. You may still be admitted with an insufficient level of education if you have ‘exceptional talent’ and you perform well during your test. A test indicates whether or not you can function at higher professional education level. You must pay for the admission test.

Admission examYou will receive a home assignment (with your exam invitation). When you receive the home assignment you are required to send a copy of your passport or ID card, certified diploma and grade list, back to us, with your completed home assignment. On the day of the admission exam you will need to show your portfolio, which will be discussed by the assessment commission in a portfolio assessment. The portfolio should consist of samples of your work, such as original paintings, drawings, photographs, concert registrations or videos. It is important for us to assess your imaginative talent and your sense of colour, form and materials. The commission also pays

attention to your authenticity and your ability to follow your own path. The question is whether you have an open mind and want to learn new things. Most important is whether you can show us that you have the potential to develop into an independent fine artist, designer or performer.

Preparatory courseEnglish Language and Study SkillsIn this quality-driven Preparatory (Prep) Course you will improve your English language skills in terms of listening, reading, writing and speaking. The course is designed to increase your current level of English to an IELTS 6.0 standard. You will also gain valuable experience through group work and acquire presentation skills, which are essential for studying in the Netherlands. Alongside this, you will acquire important knowledge and an understanding of international communication techniques. All courses are given by experienced university lecturers and every prep course student is guided by senior students from around the world. The course allows you to feel more at ease when studying in the Netherlands, so you can achieve your full potential in your future bachelor’s or master’s programme.

• February and September intake. • Duration one semester (September-January or

February-June).
