CHAPTER – ISCHOOL OF DISTANCE EDUCATION

A BRIEF PROFILE

Distance Education is an established modern method ofEducation. Distance Education permits greater flexibility and it is learnercentred. The School of Distance Education of Andhra University startedfunctioning from 1st July, 1972, with B.A. and B.Com., degree courseswith the approval of the University Grants Commission. The Schoolintroduced admission under open system into B.A. and B.Com. Degreecourses in 1976.

Overtime, the School has started a number of courses catering todifferent sections of society. Keeping in view the need for more computerprofessionals, the School is offering Master’s Programme in ComputerApplications. This course is offered for both working and non-workingcandidates and is designed with curriculum content in such a way thatthe professional community in particular may enhance their knowledgeand thereby quality service is provided to the society at large.

As a compensation for missing on campus instruction, thestudents admitted into these courses receive study material (to supplementthe text books and other suggested references) and guidance throughcontact programme structured by a peer faculty within and outside theuniversity. The contact programme will be organized at selected reputedcolleges within the state depending on the need in addition to AndhraUniversity Campus colleges. However, the list of contact centres will dependon the number of candidates registered for the course.
