continue in term 4. Stu-
dents have been spending
some of their breaks using
the Sphero robots which
we hope to do more of. In
History Year 3-4s have
learned how Lt. James
Cook and his crew saved
the Endeavour from sink-
ing off Cooktown by throw-
ing 48 tonnes of fixtures in-
cluding cannons overboard
to float off the reef. Cook
had his crew wrap a sail
coated in grease around
the hull to slow the leaks
until they we able to land
at what is now Cooktown
for repairs. The Year 5-6s
have learned about the Fa-
ther of Federation Sir
Henry Parkes. His vision
delivered at the Tenterfield
Oration convinced the
other colonies to work
hard to realise the Com-
monwealth of Australia.
Max brought in a $5 note
and $1 coin with Sir
Henry’s face on it from his
money and coin collection.
In Mathematics all year
levels studied the value of
a range of fractions in
many combinations with
upper grades also including
equivalent percentages
and decimals.
In English Year 3-4s dis-
cussed characters in the
novel “Matty Forever”.
This character analysis
work will lead to writing an
imaginative narrative they
will start with Ms O next
week.
In Year 5-6 students cre-
ated characters with super
hero alter egos which will
feature in their digital slide
shows with voiced speech
bubbles. Students will also
include an ethical dilemma
that their characters will
resolve.

In Years 3-6 Art with Miss
Lane the students self-por-
traits were completed and
then the back ground
beautifully enhanced with
small multi coloured mo-
saic squares in random pat-
terns.
Science with Mr
Kroll
This week in science the Year 5-6 were investigating irreversible changes. In to-day’s lesson the student in-
vestigated how different environmental conditions can cause iron to rust. The
students also looked at how cooking is an irreversi-
ble change by making, cooking and burning pan-
cakes.
The Year 3-4 students in-vestigated the properties of plastic, how it’s made
and the environmental is-sues related with plastic.
The P-2 class continued to
investigate materials. In to-day’s lesson the students explored different houses
from around the world. They then constructed
their own houses inspired by the three little pigs.

Sports with Mr Kroll
In Health and Physical Edu-
cation this week our stu-dents learnt some T-Ball skills and played some T-
Ball games since the Soccer unit from last week was
complete.
Next week an AFL coach is coming out Rathdowney to coach sessions in Aussie Rules for the next five weeks to the end of term.
Junior News
This week we started our storyboard for our c2c unit.
We read ‘The Very Blue Thingamajig’ and made a storyboard of the events that happened during the story. We haven’t yet fin-
ished our storyboards. When they are finished I will include some in our
newsletters. On Wednes-day we started learning
how to use the PowerPoint software. We will publish
our storyboards on Power-Point. Our spelling sound
this week was ‘ar’. We learnt that we could spell the ‘ar’ sound with an ‘a’
![Page 6: SCHOOL NEWS No.25 14th August 2020 Community · storyboard for our c2c unit. We read ‘The Very Blue Thingamajig’ and made a storyboard of the events that happened during the story](https://reader035.vdocuments.mx/reader035/viewer/2022071118/6013b3ae7e919041fc485d0f/html5/thumbnails/6.jpg)
as well. The Preps word family focus this week was ‘ag’. We did various activi-ties around this word fam-
ily.
In Maths, the Preps have been working on number facts that make 10 as well as revising the concepts
that we have learnt so far. The Year 1s have been learning about turna-rounds and exploring
measurements. While the Year 2s have been working
with multiplication and shape.
In HASS, we have contin-ued to explore family ob-
jects of significance as well as toys that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders used for enjoyment and enter-
tainment.
More from us next week, Kasey and Cathy
