• Services contracted by 15 school districts

• Serving an average of 20,000 lunches and

8,000 breakfast per day

• Approx. 8,400 students qualify for

Free/Red. meals (Broome/Tioga)

providing a quality child nutrition program

Background

• 1999 Started Bid Group

– 15 School Districts

• 2001 Power-up For Breakfast Promotion

– First Community Backed Program

• 2005-2006 Wellness Policy Planning

• 2006-2008 Hired Registered Dietitian Consultant

• 2007 Launched Rock on CaféTM

• 2009-Present Full Time Registered Dietitian on

Staff

Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act• Meeting Weekly Requirements of the Meal

Pattern:

– Age-appropriate calorie limits (min/max)

– Larger servings of vegetables and fruits

– A wider variety of vegetables, including dark

green and red/orange vegetables and legumes

– Fat-free or 1% milk (flavored milk must be fat-

free)

– More whole grains/adequate protein

– Elimination of trans fats and 10% or less of

total calories from saturated fat

– Less sodium

Local Foods and Taste Tests

• New York State apples were preferred,

by a long shot!

• Among the participating students:

– Ben Franklin Elementary, 38 voted for the

New York apple, compared to 15 for the

Washington apple

– At East Middle School, 42 students

preferred the New York apple while only 17

chose the Washington apple.
