e: At the turn of the century, K
-Staters w
ere comm
onlyreferred to as the "A
ggies," which becam
e their favorite label. The
nickname "W
ildcats" was given to the football team
in 1915 by then headcoach C
hief Bender because of the squads "fighting spirit." T
henicknam
e was changed to the "F
armers" in 1916, but head coach
Charled B
achman sw
itched it back to the "Wildcats" in 1920.
School C
olors: The school color, R
oyal Purple, w
as adopted in thefall of 1896 by a com
mittee m
ade up of Miss M
innie L. C
opeland, Miss
Winnifred H
oughton, and Miss Ina H
olyrod, of that year's senior class.A
lthough K-S
tate's only official color is purple, w
hie has been used as acom
plimentary color for m
any years. Silver is also a com
mon second or
third color. The phrase "P
urple Pride," w
hich is often used inassociation w
ith K-S
tate athletics, was given rise during the tenure of
football coach Vince G
ibson.
School M
ascot: Willie the W
ildcat, a student bedecked in a large,life-like w
ildcat head, is Kansas S
tate's number one fan. W
illie theW
ildcats are selected yearly. The m
ascot is a central part of athleticevents, but W
illie also attends other functions around the state as anam
bassador of K-S
tate and Manhattan. T
raditionally, the identity ofthe student portraying W
illie is kept secret. A grayish bobcat (w
ildcat),nam
ed Touchdow
n XI, donated by the C
lifford Roy fam
ily of Sm
ithC
enter, resides in Manhattan's S
unset Zoo. T
he tradition ofT
ouchdown began in 1922 w
hen head coach Charles B
achman helped
introduce the first mascot to the cam
pus. Once a regular at W
ildcatcontests, T
ouchdown m
ascots no longer attend the games.
