Independence High School Profile

The Patriots at Independence High School wear Green and Gold with pride! Faculty, staff and students consider the “Big I” an extension of their home and use their enthusiasm to reach new heights in Academics, Athletics and the Arts. With the motto, “I Believe…” students truly believe they can dream, achieve and grow. Independence is a true comprehensive high school understanding that one size does not fit all. The leadership, faculty and staff work collaboratively to ensure each student has a well-rounded high school experience and a plan of action upon graduation. It is our goal to provide opportunities at the “Big I” for students to find their niche. Providing options for students is what the Patriots do best. What does it mean to be a Patriot? For the students, staff and surrounding community, it means passion, pride and progress. It means, never resting on today, but always looking ahead to tomorrow’s opportunities.

Independence High School has a long tradition of success: National Board Certified and award winning teachers, championship athletic teams and highly recognized academic programs. It is located in Mint Hill, North Carolina in eastern Mecklenburg County. Our diverse student body has a population of 2,496 in grades 9 - 12 representing over 40 countries. Internships in Career and Technical Education and academic programs, as well as our affiliation with numerous business and community partners provide first-hand career experiences for students.

In 2014-15 Independence HS was listed as one of the top high schools of 2013-14 in the nation by “The Daily Beast.” Independence was ranked in the top 100 high schools based on the Economically Disadvantaged criteria. Independence had 80% of our graduating senior class accepted into a two or four year college or university. The Class of 2014 earned well over 2.5 million dollars in scholarship money and recorded a graduation rate of 88.6%. Independence had 320 students enrolled in one or more AP classes, 75 students enrolled in online College & Career Promise in 187 classes, 2 different community colleges. (Pamlico and Stanly) totaling 501 credit hours. Independence provides an extensive interscholastic athletic program and over eighty clubs and organizations to encourage student involvement. These programs provide opportunities for student growth in leadership and service.

In 2015-16 the Independence Academy of Engineering (AOE) opened for business. This proven model of college and career ready STEM education has prompted local industry leaders to serve as advisory board members for our students. Students in the AOE will complete a compensated internship for academic credit before graduation making them more employable and better prepared to face their future. The school is bolstered by many active booster clubs for athletics, band and the Academy of International Studies. The PTSA also plays a major role in school functions and activities. Independence students believe in the spirit of active community service and volunteer in many areas of Charlotte and Mint Hill. Alliances with the Lions’ Club help to enhance community involvement. Independence has opened a state of the art new gymnasium, auxiliary gymnasium, and front office wing. Active community partnerships such as Cheval Developers has added a beautiful new student friendly landscaping facelift to our campus.

Independence is no stranger to achievement, recognition and awards. From our outstanding distance learning program, which provides access to college courses for dual enrollment to high school students, to our award winning JROTC program, outstanding Theater Arts performances as well as numerous athletic championships,the Patriots have represented their community well. The Independence Patriot football team has been recognized as the NCHSAA State 4AA Champions in 7 of the past 13 years. It has received recognition from national publications, Sports Illustrated and USA Today, for its record setting 109 game winning streak.

The 90-Day Plan serves as a road map that provides clarity to specific priorities and actions that are most important during the next 90 days. The plan will help ensure the focus of all stakeholders toward an aligned understanding of the implementation and progress of our school’s continuous improvement initiative.

PURPOSE OF THE CONTINUOUS IMPROVEMENT INITIATIVE: Articulate in a few sentences what you hope to achieve by participating in the continuous improvement initiative.

Independence High School English II, Math I and Biology PLC’s to provide meaningful instructional activities for our students. All activities and tests will be aligned to the essential standards. Data will be used to track student mastery and to create a plan for remediation as needed. Together PLC’s will plan EOC Review activities and EOC Prep sessions in order to increase student achievement by at least 5% in each content.
