1. To help you understand our school business better, we will briefly describe our school (e.g. age of the students; location; environment).

St. Mark’s Sr. Sec. Public School, Janak Puri is one of the most prestigious schools in Delhi. Founded as a public school by Mr. T.P Aggarwal, the school stands tall and proud for about 42 years.

The school is affiliated to the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE), which is the largest educational board in the country. It is recognized by the Department of Education, Govt. of NCT Delhi and the Ministry of HRD, Govt. of India.

Life at SMSJP centres on a shared commitment to academic excellence, intellectual growth, art, athletics, high standards of ethical awareness, sportsmanship, and community service. The school upholds the founders' commitment to excellence in all fields, with emphasis on its motto ‘Loyalty, Truth and Honour’. The staff and management of the school endeavour not only to enable students to compete but eventually shape them into wonderful human beings imbibing rich cultural heritage and a sense of responsibility towards our nation.

SMS Janak Puri is a co-educational school, with approximately 3,500 students on its rolls. The school runs classes from I to XII including a section of children with special needs. Students are offered the streams of Humanities, Science and Commerce.

Being committed to academic excellence and providing education for all round development, another special characteristic of SMS Janak Puri is the appreciation of the worth of the each student. The School is equally committed to the under-represented and less-privileged segments of the population, such as gifted applicants whose parents could not attend school, and children with high potential facing difficult financial circumstances.

SMS Janak Puri has laboratories, computers, a library and an audio visual facility. There are playgrounds where students indulge in sports like cricket, handball, football, basketball and tennis. The schools encourages the students to participate in NCC, Scouts and Guides Camps and various other excursions.

The school building houses a huge library with books catering to the needs of both the students and teachers. The 1

school also subscribes to major newspapers, magazines and journals to inculcate reading habit among young learners.

The four computer centres have 50 computers where in the students of classes I to XII are provided computer education. The school believes in crossing the boundaries to integrate our culture and realize our similarities. To promote Global citizenship, nurture the students and to strengthen the international dimensions, the school always encourages the students and teachers to collaborate and learn together by getting involved in various online Besides collaboration projects such as GVC (Global Virtual Classroom) and AEC (Asia Europe Classroom Network).

International learning and knowledge propels students towards acceptance and understanding of an array of different cultural and community perspectives. The school provides the students many opportunities to learn beyond curriculum through cultural exchange programs which expose students to people from different cultural, religious, geographic and socio-economic backgrounds. In doing so, the students develop a greater understanding of diversity. These programmes allow students to interact with and learn from people who are different from themselves and to participate in new and unique experiences beyond their own communities.

With that in mind and with the full support of our respected Chairman Mr. T. P. Aggarwal, Director Ms. Anjali Aggarwal and Manager Mr. Rahul Aggarwal, the school has successfully completed International Educational and Cultural Exchange Programmes with schools of USA, Turkey, Denmark, Bhutan, Poland, Taiwan and Lithuania.

The school considers education to be a life-long process which should have a strong foundation. The goal of the school is to inculcate in the students a love for learning and a desire to excel at every level. The school also aims at equipping the students with the intellectual and practical skills that are necessary to meet the challenges in the future.

Section C: Our School Business Experience

2. Here is a brief description of the school business we ran before/are currently running, including the products/services we sold/are selling.

In the year 2014-15, our school undertook the business of manufacturing chocolates within the school premises. In the year 2016-17, the business that was being undertaken was that of manufacturing jams and pickles. Pickles and jams were manufactured in the school premises by involving the parents of the students of EWS (Economically Weaker Sections) category. In the current year (2017-18) we have finalised to carry on a business wherein we will be manufacturing items like cushion covers, table mats and fashionable bags by recycling old clothes.

Section D: Our Resources

3. Considering our school’s physical resources, skills and location, these are the resources available at our school we can use to develop our business:

We undertook resource assessment study in our school (report attached). We have the following resources available in our school which we can use:-

PHYSICAL RESOURCES:PRODUCTION-Production will be carried on in a room that will be equipped with sewing machines and the required resources (required raw material) will also be kept there.

STORAGE-The school has sufficient storage to keep the cushion covers, table mats and the fashionable bags before sale.

TRANSPORTATION-The school has its own transport that can be used to transport raw materials and finished

goods.

PROMOTION AND ADVERTISING-The school has computers and a good internet connection. Students will be using their skills in promoting the manufactured products.

SKILLS:BUSINESS AND ACCOUNTING SKILLS: We have teachers who are proficient in marketing and accounting field. They will mentor the ‘School Enterprise Team’ on business skills.

COMPUTER OPERATING SKILLS: Our students possess the requisite knowledge as how to create a webpage and advertise online. They can use social media to promote this business venture and gain support from the community.

PACKAGING AND LABELLING: The students have the knowledge to design print labels for the items.

SCHOOL’S LOCATION: Our school is situated in the middle of a big residential colony. The residence can provide us a flourishing

market to sell our products. It is also near the local markets and big shopping malls. There is a huge crafts bazaar ‘Dilli Haat’, a place of

tourist attraction near our school. A number of flea markets have also recently come up in the nearby shopping malls.

Section E: Brainstorming Business Ideas

4. a) Following are the five business ideas we thought of when brainstorming a new idea:

GENERATING INCOME BY STARTING A YOUTUBE CHANNEL-A YouTube channel could be started with a ‘minimal cost’ wherein we can showcase the talent of our school students and also by reaching the far off areas where the talent of the young children remains hidden. This way we could bring out the latent talent and potential of those children.

PROVIDING SHELTER TO STRAY DOGS-We can provide shelters to stray dogs and can sell them out to the dog lovers. But a good amount of start-up capital will be required for the same, like for their upkeep and maintenance, fees of the doctor, giving advertisement in the newspaper, etc. And the market size will also get restricted.

SETTING UP AN ART CLUB AND SELLING THE PAINTINGS-We have many students in our school who are being blessed with specialised skills in art work and their talent can also be utilised. It is also a low cost business. The paintings could be displayed for sale during the PTM’s (Parent Teacher Meetings) or by way of organizing an art exhibition. The market size will be confined only to the ones who admire or adore paintings.

CANDLE MAKING-Candles can be manufactured within the school premises. Lightning a candle is a long held practise in many cultural, family and faith traditions. It is also a low cost business and easy to store. But the sale will be restricted to certain occasions like Diwali, Christmas etc.

MANUFACTURING USING OLD CLOTHES-Old clothes can be reprocessed into some regular household items like cushion covers, table mats, pillow covers, scarf, fashionable bags, door mats, etc. Our target market will also be big enough and employment generation will also be there. This is again a business venture that will require less amount of start-up capital.

b) The business idea we chose for our Silver Award is: Manufacturing cushion covers, table mats and fashionable bags using old clothes. After conducting feasibility study we found this business the most promising one (feasibility study report attached).

3SILVER Business Idea Template 2017. ©Teach A Man To Fish

And these are 3 reasons why we chose this idea:

LOW COST-This venture requires low cost or start-up capital. Cost can also be controlled and minimised by bulk purchases. The products have a good profit margin. We can earn good profit even after selling it at a price lower than the competitors.CONTINUOUS DEMAND-Items like bags, cushion covers, etc. are required on a regular basis. Hence, they have a continuous demand, thus the business can continue successfully throughout the year. EASY ACCESS TO THE NECESSARY MATERIAL-The raw materials that will be required in the manufacturing process like old clothes, needles, scissors, sewing machine, decorative material like laces, designer buttons, etc. are easily available and accessible.Environment Friendly : This business idea involves reusing and reprocessing the old clothes. So in a way we are safeguarding and preserving our environment which is the need of the hour.

5. Our final Business Idea will be sustainable and have a positive impact on the environment and our community because:We are catering to the needs of the society at large. We are serving the community by engaging the EWS category parents in the manufacturing process. Hence, employment opportunities will be created. They will be compensated out of the profits that will be generated by our business. We are safeguarding our environment by recycling or reprocessing the old clothes. Hence, our practices will be environment-friendly. We are also certain that we will generate good amount of profits that we will reinvest in our further ventures and will also denote some percentage of our profits towards some social cause.

Section F: Financing our growth and development

6. Here is a description of how we are planning to finance our business, including how we are going to raise the money needed for our school business. We are going to raise the money needed for our school business by using crowd funding as a source of business finance. It is the practice of funding a project or venture by raising money from a large number of people who contribute a relatively small amount. Our students will be raising funds from their teachers, family and friends and we will be resorting to reward based crowdfunding. The ones who will contribute their money will be rewarded in the form of the items that we will be manufacturing.
