How Do Students Qualify for

Free/Reduced Lunch?

Household size and income determine your status for free/reduced lunch benefits. Eligibility for foster children is based on the children’s income alone, not the household income where they reside.

Only one application is needed per household (available in every school office) and can be submitted to your school office or sent to Kristi Buhr, 450 N. Wall St., Denmark, WI 54208. Parents or guardians dissatisfied with the ruling can discuss the decision with Kristi Buhr at (920) 863-4217. A formal appeal can be requested by phone or in writing to Katie Rabenhorst, School Board President, 4792 R. Kane Lane, Denmark, WI 54208

(920) 819-9786. The School District of Denmark participates in the National School Lunch & Breakfast Program and makes these available to students for a fee.

Students may also bring their own lunch to school to be eaten in the school’s cafeteria.

School District of Denmark Phase 1 Facility Study Presentation August 19, 2019

This past April, the Board of Education partnered with Miron Construction and Bray Architects to

conduct facility and educational needs assessments for the District. Phase 1 of the facility study is

almost complete. In this phase, Bray and Miron are evaluating and assessing all aspects of our

facilities and grounds. This includes, but is not limited to: ADA needs, HVAC, roofing, parking

lots, doors and windows, all educational spaces, and athletic facilities. They are also reviewing

student capacities at each building.

At the August 19 board meeting, Miron and Bray will present an overview of their Phase

1 analysis. I would like to invite all community members to the meeting which begins at 6:00

p.m. in the Denmark High School Performing Arts Center. Miron and Bray’s presentation will be

approximately 1 hour in length.

The Board of Education and Administration’s goal is to develop both short and long-term strategic plans to maintain and

establish facilities that meet the mission of our District, which is to provide the highest level of educational programming

to ensure student success within school and beyond. Hope to see you on August 19.

Luke Goral District Administrator

Attention Families with Children Ages 0-3 Years Old

In Wisconsin, every county has a Birth to 3 Program which is an early intervention program for infants and toddlers with

developmental delays and disabilities. The program can assess the child’s developmental ability in the following areas:

Learn and Play

Communicate

Perform Basic Self-Care

A child must have a developmental delay of at least 25% in one area as noted through Birth to 3 evaluation procedures or

other records. If a child is found eligible, Birth to 3 provides services to the child in any area identified as delayed. The

agency also assists in the transition to the school setting. If you have any concerns about your child’s development in the

areas listed above, you should inform your child’s pediatrician or contact the Birth to 3 Agency in your county.

A Bit Early

I know it is a bit early for a welcome back to our students, but the 2019-2020 school year is right around the corner and the

class of 2033 will be starting 4K! The last couple weeks of August are always a hectic and exciting time of year for our

staff.

We are getting down to the last week of summer school and high school athletics are starting to roll. This summer we had

approximately 600 students take advantage of summer school opportunities that included science, technology, engineering,

language arts, arts, math, culinary and physical education. Our new staff will be reporting on August 26th with our

veterans reporting on August 27th.

As always, our maintenance and cleaning staff are getting the indoor and outdoor facilities looking like new. We have had

a few facility and maintenance projects happen this summer. We are continuing to update our HVAC controls, remodeled

4 bathrooms at the high school in the original building, did some patching in the parking lots and replaced some much

needed flooring in spaces throughout the District. With financial assistance from a DOJ Safety Grant we were able to

rekey the entire District. Our technology team is updating our systems and getting ready for our 6-12 graders to transition

to 1:1 Chromebooks.

On a side note, our expected Pre K-12 student enrollment for the 2019-2020 school year is 1560 students. The District has

increased from 1513 students in 2014, but has leveled off the last 3 years.

Wishing everyone a great last couple weeks of summer!

Joe Schlies Elected to Serve Wisconsin Association of FFA

Joe Schlies was elected to a year of service as the 2019-2020 Section Nine State FFA

Parliamentarian during the 90th Wisconsin FFA Convention held in Madison.

Schlies looks forward to spending his year helping FFA members “find their essential role

in the FFA and agriculture.” Whether FFA members “love playing an instrument or enjoy

working with computers, the FFA has a spot for them”, Joe states. His hope for the year is

to help members make those connections so they can make the most of their opportunities

in the organization.

Jeremy Schlies Wins State FFA Star in Ag Placement Award

Jeremy was raised on his family’s dairy farm where they raise Registered Holsteins. At 12

years of age, he received his very own Registered Holstein calf. Now, he works side-by-side

with his father to handle the daily tasks and decision making of the operation

When he was younger, he would help feed calves and keep the farm clean. Today, Schlies is

still involved in calf care, but can also be found milking their 100 cow herd or helping mix

the feed so the cows get their proper nutrients. Besides working with animals, Jeremy also

helps supervise the other farm employees, as he is in charge of scheduling, training, and

guiding those who are employed there. Through this experience, he has learned how to be a

team leader.

Schlies plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison’s Farm and Industry Short Course program and graduate with

a certificate in Dairy Farm Management. His long-range goal is to take over the family farm in the future. The Star in

Agriculture Placement Award recognizes students who have logged numerous hours at an agriculture related business.

Members were interviewed at the Wisconsin FFA Convention to determine final placings.

Ruby's is a local excess food distribution program, NOT

an income-based food pantry. For a $20 donation, each

guest will receive 2 boxes filled with food. This

donation helps to cover expenses related to warehousing

and transporting the food items. Once per month, a semi

-truck full of food is delivered to Our Savior's Lutheran

Church (435 Wisconsin Ave., Denmark). Volunteers

from around the community work to unload the truck,

and to organize the various food items. Volunteers then

distribute up to 400 shares during the event to

individuals who live in Denmark, Green Bay, Manitowoc, and the surrounding areas. Each guest should bring 2 totes for

each share they receive. Some guests arrive much earlier than 4:30, and there is usually a line of 100 people when we open

at 4:30. DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU FROM COMING! Our Ruby's distribution is designed to move quickly--but not

too quickly. Our volunteers will greet you, and certainly want to meet you. We will help to get your totes filled and then

load everything into your vehicle. It's as simple as that. No qualifications, just a $20 donation, and bring 2 totes. Here are the

upcoming dates in 2019: August 27, September 24, October 22, November 26, and December 18. Groups and individuals

looking for opportunities to volunteer should contact Ginger Zoerb at Our Savior's Lutheran Church by phone at

(920) 863-2230, or by email at [email protected].

Denmark Community Cupboard

The Denmark Community Cupboard serves residents living within the School District of

Denmark. Once per month, we provide nutritious food to families who may need a helping

hand or two. NOTE: The Denmark Community Cupboard's operating day and time will change

in September. Beginning with Tuesday, September 17, we will distribute food on the 2nd

Tuesday of each month from 4:30 PM - 6:00 PM. Here are the upcoming dates in 2019:

August 20, September 17, October 15, November 19, and December 17. Food is distributed at

the Veterans Memorial shelter house at Denmark Veterans Memorial Park (across from wading

pool). There are no income requirements for the Denmark Community Cupboard. This notice

does not include the Maribel site, whose operating hours and day will remain the same, as

well as any requirements. We are also seeking donors for the Denmark Community

Cupboard. Whether you can give $1 or $10 or $100 per month, doing so is even easier with our

electronic giving program. To download giving forms, visit www.oursaviorsdenmark.org, and

choose "Denmark Community Cupboard" in the "Get Involved" menu.

Thank you for any contribution you can make!

Cutting Hunger on Weekends (CHOW)

Our Denmark Community Cupboard works to help children receive nutritious foods on the weekends

when they are away from school. We assemble bags with the food items at the end of the week and

deliver them to the local schools, and the children can then take them home with them. Children who

are eligible for free or reduced lunches are eligible to participate in this program.

Please contact Lindsey Reckleberg, School District of Denmark Social Worker, for more

information. (920) 863-4024 or [email protected].

Building Tomorrow Together!

Recently, middle and high school students in the District were asked to brainstorm ideas for the

future of the Denmark community. They developed many interesting projects to strengthen our

community and discovered life skills they would like to learn from community members. A

special youth group will be forming this fall to give teens an opportunity to work on their

community project ideas and make them reality, but they need your help!

Do you like to cook, bake, paint, build, do household repairs, fix cars or machines, play music, create art pieces and craft,

organize events, or share your love for a special hobby, interest or profession? Please consider volunteering your time and

talent with our youth and help the Denmark community become an even better place to live, work and play!

For more information on how you can be a part of this exciting new venture as a youth member or adult volunteer, please

contact Lori Wagner, Denmark Community Connector for Neighborhood Partners, at (920) 863-2738 or by email at

[email protected] .
