QUESTIONS FOR TONIGHT

An opportunity for eligible students to take college level coursework while attending high school. Students may earn college credits by successfully passing AP course exams in May.

WHAT IS ADVANCED PLACEMENT?

Dual enrollment is the enrollment of an eligible secondary student in a postsecondary course creditable toward both high school graduation and either a certificate, associate or bachelor’s degree at a Florida public institution.

WHAT IS DUAL ENROLLMENT?

Be more competitive when applying to college (see SUS matrix on SCHS Counseling link).

Then check with SCHS counselor and current subject teacher to see if appropriate.

If yes, your school counselor will add class to 2015-2016 course selection form during registration meeting. (Recommend no more than 3 AP classes/year).

PERT - Reading 106, Writing 103, Math 123 (114 Intermediate Algebra)

ACT - Reading 20, English 17, Math 21 (19 Intermediate Algebra)

SAT - Critical Reading 440, Math 500 (440 Intermediate Algebra)

Current students interested in DE need to make sure they are on the PERT list!

VALENCIA COLLEGE DE REQUIRED TEST SCORES

5.0 weighting

High school and college credit if pass the class; need C or better in Gordon Rule courses

Florida public colleges must accept credits (check with all private/out of state colleges individually)

Tuition waived and required books paid for by Osceola Public Schools

Take classes at SCHS or Valencia or UCF

Can strengthen transcript

DE PLUSES

Too many DE credits-must apply as transfer student, and then meet all prerequisites prior to starting in major.

Some colleges (private/out of state) do not accept DE credits .

Courses become part of the student’s permanent college transcripts.

DE grades of C/D could affect Bright Futures renewals and initial eligibility.Too many withdrawals can affect financial aid. 2 withdrawals = no longer eligible for DE at Valencia.

DE DANGERS

Students may feel a disconnect from high school events and their peers.

Students need to regularly check with their counselors and the SCHS Counseling Connection @ http://www.schs.osceola.k12.fl.us

Students need to regularly check with district personnel via Remind 101

Courses chosen for DE must include those required for high school graduation—failure in a required class is not an option for seniors in the spring semester!

SCHS VALENCIA DE COURSES

SCHS Application Deadlines For Term Of Enrollment: Fall 2015-to counselor by March 15; (Valencia will not accept after April 1); Spring 2016- October 1

To Do… Inform school counselor now so you can take PERT at SCHS in

February

Download and review DE Application form and information from SCHS Counselor Connection/DE web site: www.valenciacollege.edu/dual

Submit completed DE Application and SCHS Contract to School Counselor at 2015-2016 Registration-(with requisite signatures-parent, student, school counselor)

Take the PERT at SCHS /Valencia or submit original, eligible ACT/SAT scores directly to Valencia Assessment Center per website instructions.

NEXT STEP: VALENCIA DE

Valencia will process application once all college-level test scores are received and on file by May 15 for Fall 2015 term. (No Exceptions). See www.valenciacollege.edu/assessments for additional information.

Wait for official acceptance letter to be mailed to your home address 3-4 weeks (business days) with Valencia ID number.

Survey Register and participate in New Student Orientation (NSO)

MORE STEPS….

Sign up for classes with advisement from SCHS counselor and Valencia DE advisor. Make sure that courses fulfill SCHS graduation requirements.

Work with Valencia DE Advisor about majors. Check University catalogs for transfer course information.

Bring copy of Valencia schedule and required books/materials list to your SCHS counselor then pick up books for 2015 Fall term at the district offices in August.

FINALLY--COURSE SELECTION

DE Students are permitted to register for up to 4 courses/12 credit hours in the Fall and Spring; Summer - 2 courses/6 credit hours for current and returning students only

Not eligible for Flex Start, Phys Education courses, less than 3 credit hours or remedial/developmental courses.

You are responsible for dropping or withdrawing from courses you do not want in your schedule; 2 “W”s = ineligibility for further DE participation
