Principal Post

Dear Parents and Carers,

Since our last newsletter we have marked the National Day of Action against Bullying and Violence and Harmony Day. For the National Day of Action, the Student Council decorated the library and we have been filling our Choose Kind Jar with kind acts done by student and staff these last weeks. We also have a display on the wall in the office. The Bridge Builders and Be The Change Programs, as well as our U-Turn Reflection Process, are everyday attempts in our school to proactively deal with con-flict and bullying.

On Tuesday, it was wonderful to see so many children and staff dressed in Orange and National Costume to signify our school community’s wish for peace and harmony for Harmony Day. During the first break, Mrs Ahuja, Mrs Dang and their many helpers held activities for students in different spaces of the school to acknowledge Harmony Day. In the afternoon, we held an assembly where many different cultures were celebrated in song and dance. Thanks to the parents and family members who helped out with many of the dances as there were a number of practices these last few weeks during lunchtime. Special thanks to Mrs Ahuja who led the planning of Harmony Day supported by Mrs Dang, other staff and parents.

SCHOOL COUNCIL.

The elected parent members of our school council for the next three years will be Sonja March, Teresa Muirhead and Brian Stumer. Sincere thanks to Katrine Stevens and Susan Turner for also putting themselves forward for these positions. Our first School Council meeting for the year will be held in the school library on Wednesday March 28 at 4.30pm. I look forward to working with the new and returning members of the School Council.

It has been a huge term. Our classroom focus has been on setting and acting on an individual reading goal for every student in the school as well as fine-tuning teaching practices in the area of Modelled Writing. Teachers this week and next week are taking a half day to plan units as a year level team for next term. School recommences on April 17. Teachers will be at school for Pupil Free Day on April 16 attending professional development on the Teaching of Writing.

I hope everyone gets a chance to enjoy some special time with families over the Easter period. See you in Term 2.

be installed by 23 March. The signs aren’t up as I write

this but be aware, they could be tomorrow.

Bus Zone indicated in pink 8:30 – 3:30 pm – parking

is only permitted outside these times.

Drop and go zones are designed to act like a flowing taxi rank with a

loading efficient. Children who get picked up are asked to meet at

the front gate (flagpole) and we will assist them to walk to the loading

zones.

Loading zones indicated in red operate between

the hours of 8:00 – 9:00 am and 2:30 – 3:30 pm.

Parking is only permitted outside of these hours.

Class

PH Students are excited to attend the Easter Hat Parade and show the fantastic hats they made in class. We also had two visits from RSPCA who showed us how to react to dogs in our environment.

PT Prep T has been working incredibly hard to complete all the assessments for term 1. This includes assessments for English and Initial Lit foundation work, as well as Mathematics, Science and Health. We've even had some time for some Easter hat decorating. Have a happy and safe break. See you in Term 2.

PB In Prep B we have been practising our book talks. We are talking about our favourite book, why it is our favourite and how the book relates to us.

1R We have been developing a range of strategies to solve addition and subtraction number sentences. In English we have been reading stories and making connections with events that we have experienced.

1H In Geography we have been exploring how places are used and cared for. We have been observing and collecting information about how areas within our school are cared for and suggesting ways in which we can improve and care for our surroundings.

1G We've been busy learning about time and clocks. Our Easter bonnets are looking fabulous too!

2JD The 2JD authors are excited about planning and writing their imaginative narrative based on animal characters. Lunch boxes have been planned, constructed and tested. Maths is multiplication as equal groups and arrays.

2O This week in 2O, we have been working very hard! We have been building and testing our lunchboxes in Science, and exploring our connections around the world in HASS. In Maths, we are collecting and representing data, and in English we are creating a narrative that we are going to publish!

2SD This week we have started to plan and write our own narratives about an animal character. In Maths we collected data and wrote sentences about what we found out. In HASS we discussed how we are connected to different places in our local area.

2KD We have been making our lunchboxes for Science and Technology. We will test them to see if they are waterproof and strong enough to hold our lunch!

3B 3B has been completing Maths assessments. In HASS, we are looking at how and why transport in Queensland has changed over time.

3C We have thoroughly enjoyed listening to speaking presentations over the past week presented by classmates. We're still working hard and looking forward to Easter.

3HH We have been busy polishing our split and jump strategies in Math and setting our new reading goals. A huge thank you to all our Parent helpers this term especially for Swimming lessons.

3ZH 3ZH are loving Coding lessons with Mrs Jones. We are all enjoying the challenge of programming a Sphero or an Ollie to make a square remembering to instruct it to change colour, stop and travel at an appropriate speed.

4W We are investigating endangered species and causes of population decline. Also we have examined predator-prey relationships in Mangrove habitats and bushfire effects in Australian environments. We love Science!

4JM This week, 4JM have continued to review number, operations and how to balance equations. We have also been focussing on our writing goals to help us write our own chapter of the Twits.

4B We are writing our very own chapter for The Twits and looking out for kindness everywhere.

5H 5H has been busy planning, drafting, writing and publishing their final narrative. The students have used a stimulus to create a thrilling and exciting story. In visual arts, the class has learnt and used their line technique to create Emu craft, experimenting with different textures.

5J 5J are busy learning finishing off our short stories. We are really excited to publish our own version of 'Brainstorms' and put in the library and classroom for everyone to read! In Mathematics we are revisiting number and getting really good at addition, subtraction, multiplication and division.

5C 5C has been working hard on planning, writing, editing and publishing engaging short stories. Look out for this published work in the next few weeks. We have been completing maps using conventions of cartography( Border, Orientation, Legend, Title, Source, and Scale) and exploring how environmental features influence people and places.

5/6S We have been investigating perimeter and area, writing creative short stories and brushing up on our mapping skills.

6AD We have had a very busy week finishing off a number of units of work. The students are writing short stories, working with data, comparing the diversity in Asia and lots, lots more!

6D We have been completing several assessments, enjoying Harmony Day activities, participating in a National Day of Action cyberbullying webinar and looking forward to the holidays .

6M The class is exploring the concept of diversity in their H.A.S.S. studies (Humanities and Social Sciences), developing a greater understanding of how Australia compares and contrasts to her Asian neighbours. We are learning to analyse data and maps, identify trends, and make inferences about how countries are shaped by the variables of culture, climate, economy and demography.

Instrumental Music

Strings, Brass, Woodwind and Percussion Students:

Instrumental Music is a years 3 to 12 Q.C.E. – recognised subject with a set curriculum and specific student expectations. It is essential that all students meet their home practice and preparation obligations each week: a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes’ work is need-ed every day. Instrumental music combines both academic and physical aspects and for progress and skill reinforcement to occur, practice (aka I.M. Homework) cannot be neglected.”

All second year String students have been invited to a beginner strings camp.

We would like all of the second year students to attend this camp,

Please, if you have lost your note, contact Mrs Stockill for a new one.

All first year Brass, Woodwind and Percussion students have re-ceived a note to attend a music camp.

Harmony Day Celebrations

A huge thanks to the members of community-parents, relatives and volunteers for such an amazing participation in the performances. The whole school buzzed with various activities like Rangoli, Traditional native American craft, ten can bowling and parachute during the first break. A great way to celebrate the cultural diversity at Craigslea.
