School Closure Newsletter. Day 3: Wednesday 25th March 2020

Message for children from Mr Green.

Good Morning girls and boys.

Another beautiful sunny day... and no-one was sun-burned I hope. Staying safe is important so do keep in the shade

at peak UV times of day. I’m sure that you haven’t left home for a few days now, so do enjoy being in the garden as

much as you can but be sensible about it.

Have you been keeping up with your home learning each day? Remember to do this so that you will be ready for

school when we come back in a few weeks’ time.

Have you continued to be on your best behaviour? If your behaviour slipped at any time, then now might be a good

time to say sorry and make it better.

Have you been keeping things tidy, putting away toys, and going to bed on time?

On Monday I suggested becoming an expert in a subject of your choice. I wonder if you have started yet? I wonder

what you are becoming an expert in...

This COVID19 situation is a real nuisance isn’t it. So long as we follow the rules then we can stay safe... but there is a

danger of getting bored and arguing. That wouldn’t be good. It’s important to keep getting exercise for our bodies

and getting exercise for our minds... and it’s important to rest too... it’s ok to go and sit quietly on you own, maybe

with a good book or puzzle from time to time. Do find time away from a screen every day and do make sure that you

spend some time in the open air every day.

Take care, be good, and I’ll write again tomorrow.

Mr Green. Wednesday 25th March.

Message for parents, carers and grandparents from Simon Green, Head teacher.

New message: We are exploring ways to catch and keep a record of learning during this period. The purpose

would be to celebrate your work at home that supports your child’s learning. I’d be really grateful if you could

take some photos of your child learning and perhaps give us a very brief caption to accompany the photo. We

haven’t yet worked out how we will do this, but it’d be great if you could take some great photos for us all.

Daily message from the Office team.

Repeated message. We will be reducing office staffing to mornings only with just one member of staff to reduce

everyone’s risk, help keep everyone safe, and reduce the potential burden on the NHS. Please call before 12:00 if

you need to speak to us. Please limit calls to important and urgent calls only.

We will notify you through this newsletter, before the end of the week, to advise how Key Workers can book

children in for child-care in school after Easter. Remember that the safest place for your child is at home and

school-based child-care should only be used if absolutely necessary and there is no adult in the household who

can look after children at home.

Wednesday 25th March 2020 - Daily message from Nursery… to continue learning at home we suggest

Message for the week - In Nursery we tend to have weekly intentions and activities provided promote these

intentions and further learning throughout the week. As a result, learning intentions will stay the same for the week

but I will add ideas for activities each day. A lot of the learning intentions in nursery can be covered during

mealtimes, on walks with the family or just during general play. There does not always need to be a specific task set

up for that learning intention to be enhanced. Also remember that some activities will last a week and promote

many different learning intentions and opportunities.

Weekly leaning intentions which are based on the needs of the children:

• Sharing/ turn taking

• Concentration/ attention and listening skills (staying on task and listening to a story for example for a short

period of time)

• Speech – increasing vocabulary and enhancing pronunciation

• Scissor skills

• Fine motor control

• Mark making – providing opportunities to mark make

Added Understanding the World focus

• Comments and asks questions about aspects of their familiar world such as the place where they live or the

natural world

• Can talk about some of the things they have observed such as plants, animals, natural and found objects.

Since Science Week we have been exploring habitats and the animals that might live in those environments. So far,

we have looked at the rainforest, African Plains and the arctic. This week's theme is the ocean.

Morning Everyone. Here are a few ideas for some activities today.

Daily Finger Gym Exercise (fine motor control)

Found this fun video for the children to copy and practise their funky

fingers!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NRdyfEO5Ng

Remember finger gym can be anything – squeezing a small ball, opening and closing their fists, wiggling fingers,

scrunching up newspaper, etc – be imaginative!

Daily Physical Activity (gross motor control linked with expressive Art and design and Understanding of the World)

https://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b03g64pk/episodes/downloads

• Let’s Move – programme which encourages imaginative music and dance. Under the Sea Programme 2 –

Turtles, Dolphins and Whales

Continuous provision

• Continue with shallow water tray with sea animals (animals that they have in the bath maybe if none are

available) - water play promotes vocabulary and discussion - if you were able to set this up on Monday

• Use the diorama made yesterday to fuel some small world play or continue to make it if it is not quite

finished

Daily Activities

• Listen to Aquarium from Carnival of the Animals by Saint Saens

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IyFpZ5MZ7kk - use the music to promote discussion and enhance

language with your child

• Cut out some fish shapes – paint or colour them. If you have bubble wrap, painting on the bubble wrap and

printing creates brilliant fish scales

Page 4: School Closure Newsletter. Day 3: Wednesday 25 March 2020 … · 2020-06-29 · Wednesday 25th March 2020 - Daily message from Nursery… to continue learning at home we suggest Message

• Cut out some fish shapes and number them 1 to 10. Go fishing for numbers!! Perhaps create a fishing rod

with a stick from the garden (you may already have a similar game to this at home)

− catch a number and tell you what that number is

− Give the children a number and ask them to catch that number

− Catch a fish and find that amount of objects to match the number eg. 7 pebbles to match number 7

− Catch the fish and order them from 1 – 3 or 1 – 5 or 1 – 10

− Sing 1 2 3 4 5 Once I caught a fish alive

Finish the day by watching Something Special where Justin goes to visit an aquarium

https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03xpb5q/something-special-were-all-friends-series-9-16-aquarium

Why not paint a rainbow to put in your window. Lots of houses are displaying rainbows for a sign of

positivity. Perhaps everyone in the house could make one or make one large family rainbow.

Keep smiling and enjoy that beautiful sunshine.

Mrs Smith (missing all her nursery tots)

Daily message from Reception… to continue learning at home we suggest:

Wednesday 25.3.2020

Good morning Reception.

Phonics: (google phonics play to access free games and activities – we recommend you access phase 2 and 3

activities. To access put in (user name) march20 (password)home)

· Play flashcards or time challenge to practise saying the phase 2 and 3 sounds.

· We are learning to read the tricky word: you

· Train Your Brain Phase 3 https://www.phonicsplay.co.uk/member-only/TrainYourBrainPh3.html

· (the link should take you straight to the game but may ask for your user name and password which is

above in red)

· Revise the sound ur - Play Countdown. Write words: fur burn burp surf turnip down town owl now how –

in a list. How many seconds or minutes does it take for your child to read them all?

· Write sentences for reading – to practise the sound ow and the tricky word you: Is it cool for you to burp?

How can you see an owl at night? Will a cow go to town with you?

English:

• Speaking and listening: Offer your child a selection of fruit and vegetables to look at or look at the attached

picture. Ask your child which fruit and veg they like to eat. Can they explain what it is they enjoy about it?

• If you are using real fruit and vegetables you could offer a piece of their selected fruit/veg to taste and really

focus on the texture (e.g. soft, hard, crunchy, juicy, bumpy etc). If you are using the picture, encourage your

child to really IMAGINE they are eating the fruit or veg and think about how it would feel in their mouth and

what sound it might make as they bit into it. Ask them to say the following sentence and add their own

description at the end:

• “I like to eat _______ _ _______. (e.g. add crunchy carrots or bumpy broccoli).

• Writing: Ask your child to write the sentence they have just said out loud. The children should know the

“tricky words” I and to but please show them on the Phase 2 sound mat if not. You may give them the word

like. Some children may be able to use their current phonics knowledge to write the ee digraph to make the

word eat in their own way and please encourage their own “have a go writing” to write the descriptive word

and the name of the fruit or veg at the end of their sentence. Please remember that some children may want

to write two or more sentences and others will need plenty of help and encouragement to complete the one

sentence and using initial sounds for their own chosen words will be sufficient.

• Let’s get active: Please follow this link for a fun idea about hopping around the room looking for “Forky”

from Toy Story 4! https://www.nhs.uk/10-minute-shake-up/shake-ups

Page 6: School Closure Newsletter. Day 3: Wednesday 25 March 2020 … · 2020-06-29 · Wednesday 25th March 2020 - Daily message from Nursery… to continue learning at home we suggest Message

• Understanding the world: Talk about the simple things you do at home “family customs” such as sitting

down to eat at the table at meal times or going for a walk each Sunday afternoon. Why not phone a friend

and ask if they have any customs which are the same or different to your own!

Maths:

• Practise your counting skills: count the sea creatures and select the correct

number.https://www.topmarks.co.uk/learning-to-count/underwater-counting

(Or you can have 10 objects or toys and make your own number cards to 10 for your child to count some

objects/ toys and match the quantity to the number card)

• Set up a pretend shop again. Make up a story about a child going to the shop and he/ she wants to buy a toy

for 6p. The shopkeeper doesn’t have any change, so the child needs to pay for it with different coins as there

isn’t a 6p coin! What should he/she do? Make sure your child has some 1p, 2p and 5p coins to show how to

make this amount in different ways. (6 1p’s, 5p +1p, 2p+2p+2p, 2p+1p+1p+1p+1p and so on)

• Challenge: Carry out the same game/ activity but use amounts to 10p or 20p (for an extra challenge!)

• You could also play this interactive game: https://www.topmarks.co.uk/money/toy-shop-money

Other ideas:

Cooking: Make flapjack and cut into 3 different sized bars. Pretend to sell for 2p, 5p and 10p.

Art: Choose a coin and make a drawing or painting of one side or make rubbings of different coins – using crayons.

Place the coin under some paper and rub over the top.

Physical Development:

• Use a pencil with control to form letters correctly. Please see Tidcombe School website for guidance on

correct letter formation. The children are familiar with the alphabet letter formation mat and the letter

formation posters. Please encourage your child to form their letters correctly – starting in the correct place

when they write their name, etc. You can also use ‘messy’ activities to write letters with your finger or other

tools such as paintbrushes and water on garden fences or paving slabs (stay in your garden!) etc. Be as

creative as you can!

• Reading and listening to stories: Read with your child daily and talk about what you have read/ what they

have listened to. Ask them questions about the story, characters and events.

• Reception children: We hope you are enjoying your home learning so far. Make sure you keep active and

have some time to do the things you enjoy doing too. Play games, do some cooking with your grown up,

paint or colour pictures and make things. You are a very creative bunch! We are missing you lots already.

• Parents: We know this is a very difficult time and teaching your children at home is challenging. Here are a

couple of useful links for you to watch and maybe understand the way in which we teach your children

phonics, reading and writing skills. There are some ideas for activities and strategies to use at home. We

hope this helps. Please do not feel that you have to rush through these daily plans. The children will need

to practise and reinforce these activities. Allow them to role play shops on their own or with siblings once

you have put some teaching time in. In class, we teach the children skills then allow them to learn through

play and consolidate these skills.

Daily message from Year 1… to continue learning at home we suggest:

Wednesday 25th March 2020

Hi year 1, it’s Wednesday so Mrs Williams is in the house too!! I hope you are all trying your best to help your

parents out and listening well. Keep enjoying the sunshine safely when you can, remembering to stay away from

people in other houses – you could leave a chalk message on the pavement outside your friends’ houses to say hi,

but check with your parents first. Please remember your daily reading with your grown-ups or older siblings.

English

Choose FIVE of the Year 1 Common Exception words (see end of this note) that you are not very confident with.

Write these all out several times today using the look/cover/write/check strategy. Make sure you are forming all

your letters correctly - this link has an image if you are unsure of any of the letters

Daily message from Year 2… to continue learning at home we suggest

Happy Wednesday! A little update, I let Murphy (my cat) outside for the first time yesterday. He loved the sunshine

and came back when we called him. I thought you lovely Year 2s would like to know 😊

Start the day with some reading and discuss what you have read together.

Phonics/ handwriting: Use your English book (or some lined paper) to practise your handwriting. Choose 3

words from the year 2 common exception spelling page (see below) and create some sentences together

with the words in. Practise writing your sentences as neatly as you can. Remember the following:

1. All letters will be the same size

2. Only tails go low and only tall letters go high

3. Capital letters are as tall as your tall letters.

4. Letters sit on the line, they don’t float above it!

English: Practise choosing the right spelling of some homophones.

Homophones are words which sound the same (like blew and blue) but they are spelt differently and mean different

things.

Help your child to revise/learn these:

Blue/blew to/too/two see/sea

Have a go at fitting the right homophone into the blanked-out sentences. The poem will rhyme if you do it correctly!

Once you have cracked it, write up the poem in your English book.

In fourteen hundred and ninety ____,

Columbus sailed the ocean _____,

He took three ships with him _____,

And called aboard his faithful crew,

Mighty, strong and brave was he,

As he sailed across the open _____,

Some people still thought the world was flat!

Can you even imagine that?

Challenge: Can you write any of your own rhyming sentences about Columbus?

Page 11: School Closure Newsletter. Day 3: Wednesday 25 March 2020 … · 2020-06-29 · Wednesday 25th March 2020 - Daily message from Nursery… to continue learning at home we suggest Message

Maths: Ten times table time! https://www.bbc.co.uk/teach/supermovers/ks1-maths-the-10-times-table-with-

webster-the-spider/zm32cqt

Count forwards and backwards in jumps of ten. Start anywhere in the ten times table to make this more challenging

e.g start at 40 and count backwards.

Today you have some word problems to solve. Write down the calculation that you did to find the answer (as well as

the answer) in your books.

1. There are 10 candles on a cake. How many candles would 6 cakes have on them altogether?

2. I have 8 friends (woohoo). They each give me £10 for my birthday. How much money did I get altogether?

3. Football cards come in packs of 10. If Edison has 5 packs and Alfie has 8 packs, who has more? How many

cards would they have in total?

4. Florence has 30 marbles. She can put 10 in a pot. How many pots will she need to store them all?

5. Amelia has 10 friends at her party. She wants to put 6 toys in each party bag. How many toys will she need

to do this?

Challenge: Write your own word problem for your adult to try and solve! Make sure they will need to use their ten

times tables to solve the problem.

French: Warm up by using this link to practise counting up to 20 in French:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dhj9SqrIZqI

Have a go learning the days of the week in French:

Monday = Lundi Tuesday = Mardi Wednesday = Mercredi

Thursday = Jeudi Friday = Vendredi Saturday = Samedi

Sunday = Dimanche

This song will help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eA5jSbKd5cM The best way to learn the words is to

repeat the song and copy each other saying each word. Good luck!

Physical movement: In PE we would be working on our catching skills at the moment. Head outside and

play catch. Start standing a sensible distance apart and gradually make the distance bigger as their

confidence grows. How many steps back can you go without dropping the ball?

Joe Wicks will do another PE session at 9am on his YouTube channel.

If you find that your child isn’t overly excited by the Joe Wicks, then have a look at Go Noodle. It’s a free website that

we use in school to get the children up and moving. The videos are fun and age appropriate and some of them are

linked to our learning. Have a look for Banana, Banana, Meatball – the children love it!

Riddle Time - I have a little house in which I live all alone. My house has no doors or windows, and if I want to go out

I must break through the wall. What am I? English – Let’s think about the choice of vocabulary we can use when being persuasive.

• Think of three different synonyms for each of the following words: Nice Dark Warm

Use this website to help: https://www.ictgames.com/mobilePage/wordThermometer/index.html

• Write 5 reasons why you should get the gift of your dreams on your birthday. Start your sentences with these starters :

o Firstly, o Also, o Additionally, o Furthermore, o Most importantly,

Spelling – Look up the meaning of each of the homophones below and discuss with parents how to put them into sentences. How could you remember which is which? Meet/meat, here/hear, not/knot, mite/might, hole/whole, buy/by, which/witch Reading Challenge – Look for homophones when you read today. Maths – Please watch the following video about perimeter https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AAY1bsazcgM Find a variety (about 5) of different sized books and boxes. Measure the perimeter of each using your ruler and write down the measurement in cm and mm. Discuss the following questions with parents: What is perimeter? Does it matter where you start when you measure the length of the perimeter? Can you mark the place where you start and finish measuring? Do you need to measure all the sides of a rectangle or a square to find the perimeter? Explain why. Challenge

1)

2) How many different rectangles can you draw in your book with a perimeter of 20cm. Music Look around the room. Find four different things you can use as a percussion instrument. Describe how you would use each object to make sound, and what kind of sound you think it would make. Choose a favourite song and write down the title, artist, and any percussion used. Finally, describe how the song makes you feel, and how you were able to join in with your own percussion. Newsround – catch up with the latest events. https://www.bbc.co.uk/newsround/news/watch_newsround

Daily message from Year 4… to continue learning at home we suggest

Good morning, I have made my OWN cup of tea this morning.

Discussion Question: Would you rather live in a savannah or a rainforest? Discuss with your family members and

give your reasons.

English

You have written your introduction and arguments for paragraph. Today, I would like you to write your arguments

against and your conclusion.

Against paragraph – 3rd person (Remember to write a counterargument against your for arguments.)

Conclusion – 1st person (I, we)

Connective phrases – In addition, therefore, on the other hand, however etc.

Once you have finished, read it out loud – have you made any mistakes? Could you improve it?

Now, read it to an adult. Have you been able to get them to agree with your opinion?

Spag – homophones.

Identify the mistake in the following sentences and then re-write them with the corrections.

Jack made a card witch was for his mum.

There were female and mail changing rooms at the leisure centre.

I had scene a sign that said no football.

The male arrived through the letter box.

The which was very scary with her hooked nose.

Maths

Today, I would like you to look at the different methods for multiplication.

We can use mental methods, partitioning or the grid method.

For the following questions work out which method would be the best to answer them. (Show your workings)

1. 123 x 6 =

2. 35 x 5 =

3. 436 x 4 =

4. 250 x 4 =

5. 23 x 7 =

6. 108 x 3 =

7. 234 x 8 =

Challenge:

Mia has 26 boxes. In each box there are 8 footballs. How many footballs does she have altogether?

Fluency

Write down eight 2-digit numbers and work out what number you need to add to make 100. Do challenge yourself –

don’t make them too easy. (e.g. 56 + ? = 100)

Physical activity

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3LPrhI0v-w – Watch Joe Wicks and follow his 5-minute workout.

Can you improve the number of stars jumps you can do in a minute?

Art or music

In science, we have looked at light. This art activity uses light to create rainbow pictures

https://www.tate.org.uk/kids/make/performance/make-rainbow.

For music, we have looked at Jazz music, explore some Jazz music and see if you make your own instrument for a

Jazz band.

I hope you have a day full of smiles. Miss Davies

Daily message from Year 5… to continue learning at home we suggest

Wednesday 25th March 2020

Good morning Year 5! think today calls for some of our favourite Super Movers songs. Apologise to your adults in advance as these songs are guaranteed to be stuck in your heads ALL DAY LONG.

English / Geography

Sing along with these catchy songs about parenthesis and relative clauses. Here is a video and a website about

biomes. What types of biome do your chosen countries have? Is there more than one biome in your country? What

animals live within these areas? Think about how the animals have adapted to live in this environment. Pick two

biomes that are present in your countries and write a description of each biome. Include examples of parenthesis

and relative clauses (see the links above). You could underline/shade examples like we do in school. E.g. Rainforests

(which are hot and wet all year round) are home to half of all the different types of animals. You could use the

information below the video for ideas on what to write about.

Maths

Go to https://www.mathschase.com/ and practise your times tables. You can increase the challenge by altering the

chaser speed and by increasing the amount of points needed to win. I think you will really like this game! Go to the

tab All Maths Games and scroll down to Sequencing. Practise counting in multiples (e.g. 7, 14, 21, 28, 35 etc).

Today we will revise multiples, factors, prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers. Here are some clips to

revise prime numbers, square numbers and cube numbers. Each clip has a quiz if you scroll down.

In your books, write down these numbers and circle those that are multiples of 5 (numbers that can be divided by 5

without a remainder / numbers that are in the never-ending 5 times table!).

83 65 251 495 1000 1551 8,245 is a multiple of 5 because…

Complete the table by thinking of some 6-digit numbers then sorting them into the correct column in the table

below. This activity could be repeated/extended. For example, you could sort by multiples of other numbers (at least

up to 12) and you could change the number of digits.

Multiple of 5 Not a multiple of 5

Challenge: Are all multiples of 8 multiples of 4? Are all multiples of 4 multiples of 8? Prove it.

Watch the video about factors and complete the quiz below the video. Below is an example of a venn diagram

showing the common factors of 18 and 30 (numbers that are a factor of both 18 and 30). So 1,2, 3 and 6 – in the

middle section – are all numbers that can go into both 18 and 30 without a remainder. Try creating a venn diagram

to show the common factors of:

24 and 42 12 and 21 36 and 48

Reading

Read, read, read! In the garden, on your bed, to the dog…! If you’re baking

or playing a board game, read the instructions to somebody. Take this time

to read for pleasure and find some books that you just CAN’T put down.

Physical Movement

Remember, you can join in with Joe live or watch his sessions later in the day.

Why not try some Minions Zumba? (Yes, you heard that right!) You could

then make yourself feel good with some yoga!
