MESSAGE FROM THE DEPUTY PRINCIPAL

Daily Maths Routines-Rapid Recalls Skills Recently I spoke to you about our key maths strategy- Daily Maths Routines Rapid Recalls. You can help support your child by practising daily mental computation at home, in the car and any other time conversations around maths can fit into the real world. Some of the key skills that may be developed using daily routines include:

Sense of the relative size and value of very large and very small numbers Operational sense –understanding links between operations and how to use them Fluency (efficiency, accuracy, and flexibility) Good intuition about numbers and their relationships-estimating, reasonableness

of numbers Reasoning-thinking outside the square, using higher order thinking Problem Solving Mental computation

Please see below some ideas to try when talking or using maths at home. Manipulatives We learn by moving from the concrete to the abstract. The meaning isn’t in the manipulatives themselves – it has to be constructed by children over a period of time, through playing around with them and connecting them directly to mental and recorded calculation. Talking about their work The quality of the maths talk is important. It is not simply children sharing how they did a particular calculation, but describing why and how it worked, and how their method is the same or different to those of others. In other words, giving children opportunities to use those higher-level skills of comparing, explaining and justifying. Being able to solve a problem in more than one way, therefore, reveals the ability and the predilection to make connections between and among mathematical areas and topics'. Consolidation in meaningful contexts By offering children practice in context we help them to make links between the types of situations that a particular strategy might suit. Mathematical memory is different from just memorising. Mathematical procedures cannot be "forgotten over the summer" because they are based in a web of connected ideas about fundamental mathematical relationships. SCHOOL BANKING

School Banking - Account Opening Day Holland Park State School is excited to offer the Commonwealth Bank School Banking program to all students. The School Banking program provides children with an opportunity to deposit money into their Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account at school each week. The program is about how often your child makes deposits, not how much they deposit. To encourage regular savings behaviour the program offers an exciting Rewards Program. Every deposit earns your child a Dollarmites token, and once they’ve collected 10 tokens they can redeem them for a reward. School Banking day is Wednesday. Each week you simply need to pop some money in your child’s yellow bank folder, complete the banking slip and ask your child to place their bank book in the grey banking bag available in each classroom. When a student first starts banking, they won’t have a student number – this is provided by the volunteer banking mums when they make their first deposit through the school. We will be holding an Account Opening Day at our school: Date: Wednesday, 28 February Time: from 8.15am Location: next to the playground near the Prep classrooms If you are interested in opening a Commonwealth Bank Youthsaver account for your child please bring along your current driver’s licence or another form of photographic identification. Alternatively, you can open an account at your local branch. All you need to bring is your current identification as well as your child’s birth certificate. If you are an existing Commonwealth Bank customer and have NetBank, you can open an account online. If you would like to know more about School Banking, please ask for a 2018 School Banking program information pack from the school office.

Unfortunately we are again receiving reports regarding cars being parked across driveways

of neighbouring properties. Please consider all the residents around the school grounds and

their ability to drive in and out of their own properties without restriction.

Yellow lines on our roads are there for a reason and their message is very clear- do not park

there.

This week cars were parked all the way up Abbotsleigh Street up to and beyond the school

crossing making the area unsafe for our students and the crossing supervisor.

A final reminder is for everyone to wait for the crossing supervisor’s whistle before entering

the crossing. This is for both student and adult safety. Your cooperation in these matters is

appreciated.

Unfortunately the weather was not kind and we had to cancel our first

club night for many years. Thanks to the parents who helped in the

canteen and cooked the BBQ, ensuring most of us didn’t have to cook

when we got home. If you are unable to get to the pool to nominate

for this Friday, I will carry over the nominations from last week, but the special will be the

100m Backstroke.

Only two more club nights before Age Championships, so make sure you nominate for the

next two weeks.

times in each age group for both girls and boys. No finals will be swum. The night starts a

little later with warm-up at 5.30pm and racing from 6pm.

At the Age Championships, children 8 years and under swim only 25m events and 9 years

swim the four, 25m events plus a 50m Freestyle. Children 10 years and older swim the

four, 50m events, plus 100m Freestyle and the IM. The age of the swimmer for the

Championship is the age they are on Friday 9th March 2018.

Worm Pee and Tea

Hello parents, teachers and students,

My name is Samuel James, I’m in year 5 in 5KJ. Recently I have started a business that I want to tell you about today. I noticed that mum and dad’s garden needed fertiliser so I spent some of my birthday money and bought a worm farm.

Every week the worms produce a natural by-product from digesting our food scraps. I bottle this natural worm pee and can sell it to you for your gardens at a cheaper and more environmentally friendly way to get your plants and grass looking healthy.

I present Worm Pee (worms don’t pee). You should buy my fertilizer as this is what Google says about worm pee –

Worm Juice is the liquid by-product of your worm farm, worm juice is a fantastic fertiliser.

Back to my business, Worm Pee and Tea: For only $1 you will receive 1 litre of undiluted worm pee. If you would like to order email [email protected] please note, email/s are checked once a week. We will wait outside the office on Friday to deliver 3:05pm to 3:15pm no delivery fees. I take pride in this work and want to make you happy w ith your purchase, we have 4 litres in supply per week.
