Dear Parents and carers,
Welcome to Timothy Hackworth Primary School. Our
school brochure has been produced by the staff and pupils
and we hope that you will find the information both
interesting and useful.
We at Timothy Hackworth are proud of our school. We look
forward to meeting you and having the opportunity of
showing you around our classrooms and playgrounds.
Ours is a happy school with high hopes and ambitions for all
our children and we welcome working in partnership with
parents and cares to ensure that everything is done in the
best interests of the children at all times.
All the staff, teaching and non- teaching take their
responsibility towards the children seriously and their target
is to help each child reach their full potential physically,
emotionally, socially and academically. To us, every child is
unique and precious and we endeavour to foster a high level
of motivation towards work and behaviour.
We are committed to the Basic Skills of Literacy and
Numeracy.
At all times we aim to centre the teaching in an atmosphere
of mutual respect and personal responsibility. Our school has
links with our local parish church of St. John’s, the
Methodist Chapel and The Salvation Army which we greatly
value.

Further information and “pen portraits” of our Governors
John Laverick – Community Representative and Chair of Governors
Originally from Redcar, I have lived in the Shildon area for over 20 years. I am a
Sales Director for an Engineering supply company working out of Bishop Auckland
and Hartlepool. My daughter attended Timothy Hackworth School a number of years
ago and I joined the Governing Body at that time. I have been proud to be the Chair of
Governors. I believe strongly in giving our children the best education possible, both
for them and the future of our community. The staff of Timothy Hackworth School
and the Governing Body work together to this end.
John Shortland – Community Representative
Born in Witton-le-Wear; educated at Coundon Primary School, Spennymoor
Grammar School and York St. John College, I joined the staff at Timothy Hackworth
School in 1968 and was a year 6 specialist teacher for many years with curriculum
responsibilities including art, PE, science, IT and maths. I ran the school art, football,
swimming and athletics clubs. I took early retirement in 1997 but continued to work
part time with year 6 groups. A teacher governor, but more recently a community
governor, my interests include music, art, cricket, gardening, railways and the church.
I will very soon have had a 40 year involvement with Timothy Hackworth School.
Christine Tillotson – Staff Representative
My involvement in Timothy Hackworth School has many different roles, as a pupil, a
parent of three children, a teacher and as a governor. I came to Timothy Hackworth
School as a teacher in 1992 having previously taught at North Road School in
Spennymoor for nearly 18 years. I have taught children in year 5 at Timothy
Hackworth for 14 years but had a change of year group last year and am now teaching
in year 4. I have a special interest in music and organise the choir and recorder
groups in school. I also support and help the football coach,
Mr Stevenson, to run the football team.
Karen Raby – Parent Governor
I have lived in Shildon all of my life. I am married with 2 children, aged 8 and 11
who both attend Timothy Hackworth School. I am a teacher and co-ordinator and I
work for a national charity as well as a local training provider. I teach dyslexic
children and adults as well as young apprentices. I have been a school governor for
almost 2 years and enjoy participating in school events whenever possible.
6
Audrey Simpson – LEA Representative
I am married with 2 children and have been the school crossing patrol for Timothy
Hackworth School since November 2002. I have been a lunchtime supervisor at
Thornhill Primary for 12 years. I am an experienced governor having served on the
governing body of Thornhill and Sunnydale Schools. My hobbies including football
and fostering for a rabbit rescue centre in Richmond.
Pauline Crook – Staff Governor
I have lived in Shildon all of my life and am married with two daughters, aged 22 and
19 years. I have a family history at Timothy Hackworth; my mum was a pupil here,
as was I and also my two daughters; we all have happy memories of our school days.
My involvement with the governors started in 1995 as a parent governor and I am
now a staff governor with a particular interest in the school’s finance and premises as
this links in well with my job as school bursar (business manager). I enjoy being
involved in all aspects of school life and I am a member of Foths (Friends of Timothy
Hackworth School).
Our governing body is friendly and approachable. The members are
committed to our children receiving high quality teaching and learning
experiences. The governing body meets formally twice a term and
there are sub committee meetings throughout the year. Many
governors are frequently to be found in school offering help and
support in many ways. You may contact the governing body at
anytime by writing, care of the school, to Mr. J. Laverick, Chair of
Governors.

“We would like our school to be at the heart of the community, sharing and supporting,
by offering leadership, commitment and dedication through innovation.
We aim to nurture a positive self-image, a joy of learning, effort for self-improvement
and open-mindedness with respect for diversity.
We will promote in children the skills necessary in order to think critically, argue
effectively, recognise injustice and inequality and to co-operate with others.
We believe in helping pupils to develop knowledge and understanding of the wider world,
their impact on the environment and their ability to change things in order to live
confident, healthy, independent lives as individuals, parents, workers and members of
society, fulfilling their academic, creative, practical and social potential.”
This statement lies at the heart of Timothy Hackworth school and we measure all our actions against the respect we have for each
individual, both adult and child in our school family. Our curriculum is designed to enable each child to celebrate his or her true potential and to grow academically, spiritually and socially with the confidence of knowing that he or she is a valued member of the community. In this way, self respect; respect for others and
respect for our environment will flourish. We reach out to the wider community through our educational,
sporting and social ties and to the world through our awareness of others and appreciation of and respect for different beliefs and
lifestyles.
TIMOTHY HACKWORTH SCHOOL – ON THE TRACK TO
SUCCESS!

Our published admission number for the Reception class is 60
ADMISSION POLICY
To apply for admission, parents should request a Common Application Form from the
school office. Parents should complete all sections of the form and indicate, in order
of priority, which schools they would prefer their child to go to. The completed form
should be returned to the School Admissions Section, Education Department, County
Hall, Durham, DH1 5UJ as soon as possible. The Local Education Authority (LEA) will
try to ensure, wherever possible, that the parents’ first preference is met but it may
not be possible to offer a place if the number of applications exceeds the school’s
admission limit. The LEA will then try to offer a place at the second or third
preference of schools. If a place cannot be offered at any of the preferred schools,
the LEA will offer a place at the nearest school to the home address with places
available.
Children born between 1st September 2004 and 31st August 2005 are eligible for
admission into Reception in September 2009.
Appeals
If parents are dissatisfied with a decision not to admit their child to the school, they
have the right of appeal to an independent appeals committee. Further information is
available from the School Admissions Section, Education Department, County Hall,
Durham, DH1 5UJ.
Parents are ALWAYS welcome to visit the school prior to application. It is helpful to us if an
appointment is made first via the school office.

There are 15 classes, including the Nursery, in the academic year
2008/2009. Each class is a mixed ability group of children who are then
grouped according to the learning objective of the lesson.
Occasionally, groups are withdrawn in order that more
specialised teaching may take place. This system of withdrawal is used
for children across the ability spectrum from those with an identified
gift in a particular area to those who may require more consolidation
of basic skills.

!!Very important information!! At home time we ask you to collect your children in the yard, away from the
congestion of Oxford Street. For safety’s sake consider carefully how and
where to park your car – it could be your child forced to go on to the road
because of thoughtless parking. Please do not use the school car park at any
time and do not use this as a short cut to Byerley Road. Also for safety’s sake
we do not allow dogs or cycles in the yard. Our school is a “No Smoking School”,
so please do not smoke anywhere on the school premises, even in the yards. Our
decisions have been made with the children’s safety uppermost in our minds.
Key stage 1 children receive free fruit each day but we encourage all children to bring fruit to
school. No sweets are allowed!
“Cool Milk for Schools” is a scheme whereby children under 5 receive a free carton of milk
each day. There is a charge (currently 13p per day payable termly/half termly in advance) for
older children to receive the milk but this is not a great cost for the benefits to health.
We encourage all children to drink water during the day. Please supply a bottle each day-
WATER ONLY!!
11
We seek to provide all our children with a broad, balanced and rich learning experience from Nursery to Year 6. The learning curriculum will be
supported through high quality teaching and support staff. We aim to provide a curriculum for the whole child through promoting Healthy lifestyles,
providing opportunities for economic awareness and living in a diverse and multicultural society.
In conjunction with the National Curriculum, Timothy Hackworth also teaches a daily Literacy and Numeracy hour which both are planned and
taught to a common format throughout the school. We are committed to the basic skills of Literacy and Numeracy
In addition to the statutory elements of the curriculum, we offer the
children opportunities to experience a range of extra-curricular activities:
Sports, Recorder, Guitar, Chess, Football Training Gymnastics, Needlework,
ICT, Dance, Drama, Spanish
12
We believe that a planned and regular programme of home study is essential to each child’s achievement of their potential. You will be given,
each term, details of the different curriculum areas your child will be studying. In this way parents are given access to their child’s learning and will,
therefore, be better able to support and encourage the children on a daily basis.
Parents are also to be provided with “guidelines” as to amount of time to be spent on homework for the different age groups.
All the children at Timothy Hackworth are special! Some have particular talents, and some may require more support in small groups or perhaps
individually. We have a carefully designed system for identifying individual needs and, as always, we aim to work closely with parents. Details of the schools’ Special Educational Needs policy and guidelines are available on
request.
Language Resource Base We are also fortunate to have a 20 place Language Resource attached to the school. Children come from around the area and receive expert support from
very experienced staff.
Timothy Hackworth School is committed to equality of opportunity to all its pupils, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, religious affiliation or
disability.
13
Discipline is firm and friendly and we aim to foster in the children a responsibility for their own actions.
The school operates an Assertive Discipline programme which aims to help children to recognise and change undesirable
behaviours through a clear system of warnings and sanctions. You will be given full details of the system at the start of a new academic
year
Should the behaviour of an individual deteriorate, then the Head Teacher can temporarily exclude a child. Extreme behaviour
may warrant a permanent exclusion though this sanction is always a final recourse once all other avenues have been explored.
We take very seriously any issues relating to bullying. It is not tolerated in Timothy Hackworth School and we will deal with any
incidences firmly.
Exclusion is only ever contemplated when the education and welfare of the other pupils is being threatened.
14
We encourage parents to support the school‟s uniform policy, which is as follows;
Royal blue sweatshirt / cardigan* White shirt or polo shirt*
Grey trousers / skirt / pinafore
Summer Wear As above or:-
Blue gingham dress Grey shorts instead of trousers
*Sweatshirts/ cardigans and polo shirts with the school badge can be ordered
from school ( optional)
15
A change of top with shorts and sandshoes is required for both boys and girls (black shorts and plain white t-shirt). Football shirts etc.
should not be brought to wear in school.
Please note that trainers are not suitable for indoor wear as they are not flexible and offer little or no grip on the equipment. When there
are outdoor activities trainers may be worn.
For health and safety reasons children should not wear P.E. kit to school or borrow kit from other children.
If there is a medical reason why your child should not do P.E. then a
letter of explanation is required on the day of the lesson.
Jewellery (including earrings for pierced ears) IS NOT permitted in school and watches must be removed prior to the P.E. lesson. IT IS SCHOOL POLICY NOT TO ALLOW THE WEARING OF ANY
JEWELLERY BY PUPILS IN SCHOOL.
16
School meals are cooked on the premises and are of a high standard. Dinner money is required on a Monday morning in a sealed envelope. Cheques should be made payable to „Durham County Council‟ or D.C.C. and have your name and address on the back. From September 2008 the cost for a school
meal will be £1.65 each day (£8.25 each week) Children and parents are now able to choose their meals in advance from
a three week menu
Children sit in friendship groups at lunchtime whether they are school meals or packed lunch and we aim for mealtimes to be pleasant social occasions
for all concerned.
Special Diets
Special dietary requirements can be catered for by the School Meals
contractor “Taylor Shaw”. Parents should contact the Head Teacher who will advise on how such arrangements can be put in place.
17
Should you qualify for free school meals then the school strongly urges
you to make this known to us at the earliest opportunity. You may decide that you do not wish to take up your entitlement and
there is no requirement that you should so do. However, an important factor in how the school is funded is the number of Free School Meals it has. For this reason it is essential that the school have accurate records of those entitled
regardless of take-up. All information is held in the strictest confidence at all times. Forms are
available on request from the school office.
If it is necessary for you child to continue with prescribed
medicine at school it will be necessary for you to complete a medical form available from the office. Only medicines prescribed by a GP to be taken 4 times daily can be administered in school. Your child will
be responsible for remembering his/her medicine and will be supervised taking it by a member of staff.
PLEASE NOTE THAT NO NON-PRESCRIPTION MEDICINES MAY BE ADMINISTERED OR TAKEN IN SCHOOL.
18
Accidents
Children are well supervised in school but, on occasion,
accidents happen. Minor injuries are dealt with in a hygienic and sensible way. In the event of a child bumping his/her head, parents are contacted as a matter of course (Information sheet sent home).
We have 4 fully trained First Aiders in school.
We take health and Safety very seriously. A member of
the Governing body monitors this area of responsibility
with the Head Teacher and reports to the full Governing
body. Regular fire drills, legionella testing, electrical
testing, fire safety maintenance are all undertaken as a
matter of course.
19
We aim to make each day in school as happy as possible for
everyone at Timothy Hackworth Primary School and hope that
the children are keen to come each day.
However, there will be occasions when children are too
poorly to come to school and it is essential that parents inform
us ON THE FIRST DAY OF ABSENCE either by telephone or by
note.
We have a legal duty to keep accurate records and
registers of attendance and failure to inform the school of the
reasons for non-attendance will result in your child receiving an
unauthorised absence. These are routinely passed to the
Educational Welfare Officer who monitors such absences.
Punctuality is a life skill we encourage with our children.
Children arriving between 8.50 and 9.00 am will receive a late
mark which is recorded as present. Children arriving after 9 am
will receive an unauthorised absence mark for the whole morning
session
20
The school firmly believes in celebrating the many and
varied gifts and talents of the children. We operate a merit
award system, which allows all the pupils to gain merit points for
good behaviour, high standards of work, helpfulness etc.
The award system allows the children to achieve
certificates
There is also an Award of the Week for particular
achievement in each class.
There is also an award for the class with the highest
attendance each week.
Children who have 100% attendance receive an award at the
end of each term and at the end of the school year.
21
We aim to keep you well informed of your child’s progress and learning and
there are 2 formal consultation opportunities during the school year, Autumn
and Summer. We also provide effort reports called “TH” (TRY HARD) reports
each term for your information. However, parents and carers are welcome at
any time to make an appointment to discuss any aspect of their child’s
education.
Each week you will receive a newsletter which will “keep you up to date” with
current events in Timothy Hackworth. Knowing that you will receive this each
week should make it easier to keep in touch and less likely that you miss
important information.
Each year, you will receive a parental questionnaire which asks some basic
but important questions. Your cooperation in completing and returning the
questionnaires can make a real difference. We also conduct a similar survey
with the children.
We will share the results of this survey with you and any action which we
intend to take as a result of the information given.

A compulsory charge cannot be requested from parents for educational visits.
However, we do ask for a voluntary contribution to be made towards the cost of
the trip. To be realistic, it is impossible to fund most trips without
SUBSTANTIAL support from the parents. At all times we try to bear in mind
the cost of visits and try to subsidise them from school funds or with help from
our P.T.A. A child will not be excluded from any Educational visits if a
contribution is not made.
Parents are made to feel very welcome in our school. We have a core of parents who help with reading, maths, art and other activities. If you have an hour or so to spare and would be interested in becoming an invaluable aid to the children‟s
education, please let the Head Teacher or your child‟s teacher know.
Most problems and concerns can be resolved quickly through discussion. However, there is a complaints procedure available to parents, details of which
are available from the Head Teacher.
24
