Description of SBE Briefing

Date : 10th 2014

Time : 11 a.m. – 12 p.m.

Venue : Through Skype (Online meeting)

As usual, a briefing will be held before we went to school for School Based

Experience (SBE). On 10th October 2014, the briefing was held by online meeting.

Unfortunately, I was not able to participate in the meeting as I did not have a good internet

connection in my hometown. However, I still get the briefing details through my friends that

could join the meeting on that day.

The meeting started on 11 a.m. The meeting was held to ensure that all of the

teacher’s trainees get a clear view of the SBE programme. The SBE programme would be on

13rd October 2014 – 17th October 2014.

We were informed that there will be a bus to take us to the school. We were alerted to

assemble at 6 a.m. in the morning in front of SEGi Resident. The bus also will take us from

the school after the school session ended. So, it is very convenient for us since most of us do

not have our own transport to go to the school.

I was placed in Sekolah Kebangsaan Seksyen 9. Even though it was the same school

as the previous SBE, I am sure that I will gain more experience there. We were reminded to

wear an appropriate attire and well-mannered. Apart from that, we were reminded to take the

posting letter at the office before we go to the school.

Report on One Class Observation

Date : 16th October 2014

Venue : 5C

Name of the teacher (s) : Madam Tun Irdawati

Lesson : Craft

Before the lesson started, the teacher explains about craft in visual arts. Then, she

asked the pupils to take out materials that she reminded them to bring for this lesson. The

craft that they will do is ‘ Little Star’. The instruction is on their activity book.

The teacher gave brief instruction while she demonstrated step by step on how to

make the star by using paper. After she done with the explanation, she asked the pupils to

make it by their own. They were allowed to ask if there is something that they did not know.

The pupils seemed excited and fun in learning. I could see that they tried their best to

make the star. Moreover, when they asked any questions, the teacher answers it patiently. If

the pupils did a good job, she will praise them. I think that is the reason why they seem

enjoying the lesson.

Then, when they finished making the star, they have to colour it according to their

preference. They even can design the star by using their own creativity. After that, they need

to put it in the bottles that they were asked to bring along for this lesson.

At the end of the lesson, the teacher told them varieties ways to make the star by using

recycle materials such as old newspaper, present wrapper or any reusable colour papers. She

ended the lesson with reminders of what they will do for the next lesson. It is for the pupils to

prepare the materials and get ready for the next lesson.

Interview With Mentor

Date : 16th June 2014

Venue : Teacher’s room

Name of the teacher : Madam Noraisyah

She was a young, helpful and kind teacher who guides me about the teaching

profession and how things have changed since her time and now. She repeatedly advise me to

be prepared in any obstacles and challenges that I may go through in the future as things will

be more complicated with the presence of advanced technology as well as in students’

behaviour too. She had shared with me about the students’ backgrounds and how it affects

them in learning too. Most of the students in that school come from an environment where

their parents and family were used to rise their voice to the kids in a way that they were not

afraid of teachers’ who using the same way to them. However, it was not the schools’ style of

educating to beat the students who commit mistakes. In fact, they will conduct the proper

ways of educating through actions and initiative of personally having a meeting with the

students. I have also discovered that the schools’ had the similar system with other schools of

streaming the students as according to their academic achievements. Students who achieve

good grades in final examinations will be placed in the first, second or third class. In contrast,

those students who scored less in final examinations will be placed in the below average

classes. This system is to identify the students who are fast learners and below average

learners. If the students were all placed under one class, it will be hard for the teachers to

deliver their lessons and to recognize students who understand and whose not. However, she

has also stressed about putting extra efforts and time in teaching students as that was an

ultimate priority for every teacher in this world which is to strive for a KSSR’s objective that

is to perform student who is physically, intellectually, spiritually and mentally balanced.

REPORT OF DISCUSSION WITH MENTOR

Date : 15th June 2014

Venue : Teacher’s room

Name of the teacher : Madam Noraisyah

Since I came late for SBE, I met her later than the other SBE participants in SK

Seksyen 9. The discussion started with getting to know each other first. She also asked us me

few questions about my study life in SEGi since she heard that we are under government but

we studied in private university. She was very curious about it as she never heard about it.

She told me that I am very lucky to have that opportunity. After that, we started to talk a

quick introduction about ourselves. Then, she took our task list to see what he could help us

as a mentor. As we discussed what we need to complete our assignment, we set the date, time

and place for the interview and next discussion. At the same time, she also arranged her

schedule so that she can give me her free time to meet. She also told us about the skills

needed to handle the students. There were students who can easily obey every instruction

from teachers and on the other hand, there were some of them who did not get intimidate with

teachers’ orders. Nevertheless, teachers cannot use any fierceness towards students as that

may lead them to rebellious and becoming more disobedient. They were just kids who will

listen to the teachers’ orders if the teachers know the required pedagogical skills to be applied

in educating them. After we set the date and time for interview, meeting as well as class

observation, we ended our discussion. Then she reminded us to behave well and try to get

along with the other teachers, staffs and pupils in the school. Plus, if I have any problem, she

welcomed me to meet her anytime.

REPORT OF DISCUSSION WITH OTHER TEACHER

Date : 20th October 2014

Venue : Teacher’s room

Name of the teacher : Madam Tun Irdawati

Since she is busy with her works, I have done the interview while helping her to finish

up the task which is organized questions paper. The interview started at around 9.45 a.m. in

the library. As this SBE is for the Elective 2, Visual Arts, this interview will be focus on the

visual arts.

Madam Tun Irdawati is from Perak. She was a designer before she applied to be a

teacher. According to her, being a teacher was not her own choice at first. She went for the

interview because of her family. However, when she became a teacher, she started to love her

career. She said that it is fun to share what she likes with her pupils.

In teaching arts, patient is an important element in class. Pupils usually have lots of

question when it comes to class activities. They were different kind of questions that will be

asked. Sometimes it might not even relate to the subject. That is why, we have to be patient

and tolerate with them. For her, she believes that children’s curiosity will attract them to have

fun in learning arts.

At the end of the interview, she advised us to our time during the SBE to gain as

many as we could since this is the opportunity for us to get used with the real school

environment.

REPORT OF DISCUSSION WITH NON-TEACHING STAFF

Date : 15th October 2014

Venue : School field

While I was walking around to get familiar with the school environment, I met Miss

Rashida. She is one of the schools cleaner. Since she was free at that time, I used it to

interview her. While talking with her, she asked me to call her Kak Syida since she felt

comfortable with it.

According to her, throughout the years, she has never complaint of having any

misbehave attitudes among students who might be mocking her work as a cleaner. In fact, the

pupils were all well-behaved as well as the teachers who were always being nice and kind to

her and other non-teaching staffs in the school.

At the end of the interview, I asked her opinion about parent’s cooperation towards

the school. Based on her view, most of them follow the rules such as do not across the gate to

send their children. There is still few of them who do not follow that rule. Yet, it does not

become a big issues to the school.

Page 14: school based assessment 4

DOCUMENTATION OF INTERACTION WITH STUDENTS

Everything that I have observed in school has somehow given me a new direction of

applying the pedagogical teaching skills to students in a way of producing students who are

excellence academically and practically. As usual, the classrooms were divided according to

pupil’s achievement. Fortunately, I was given the opportunity to go to varieties class.

The interaction that I have with the students has somehow changed my perspectives in

teaching profession. It never came to me that I will be able to handle students who are

mischievous and naughty yet I know that I need to learn more about children psychology.

The students are all in their learning process of understanding life and school has become

their medium of expressing their ideas in life.

As they are the easy learners in absorbing everything that they see and acquire, they

are also at the stage of age which is easily to be ‘adjusted’ into a well-behaved human being.

Therefore, the interaction between teachers and students are vital and teachers should not

give up in students as the teaching and learning is a two way process and is required to make

it successful.

All in all, I could say that the pupils in the school are friendly since they welcomed

me and the other teacher trainees started from the first day until the last day we went there. I

am glad that they gave me a good feedback and cooperation.

Page 15: school based assessment 4

REFLECTION AND SUMMARY OF SBE

First of all, during the class observation, I realized that preparation before class

session is vital. It is necessary to ensure the class session working smoothly without any

problem. That is why I still need to prepare myself in providing more teaching materials as to

make the students feel interested and enthusiastic in learning.

Furthermore, seeing that the class is so packed with many students have made me

come to think that there will be some students who were left out in learning which can

become a new challenge to teacher. This is because the teachers may find it hard to recognize

or focus on the weak students as there are many other students who are ready to learn. This

dilemma somehow needs to be considered by the school administration as I noticed that it is

very difficult for teachers to focus on each pupils in class.

I cannot describe how much I feel grateful to do my SBE at that school because I

have learnt a lot about reflecting myself as a dedicated teacher in the future who expected to

produce students who excellence in academic and curriculum. I will apply the required

pedagogical teaching skills that I have learnt from the teachers as well as the knowledge that I

have acquire to my future students.

In conclusion, the experiences that I acquired from the class relief have made me feel

warm at heart to be able to see students who are going to be somebody in the future. This has

made me learnt about many aspects of teaching which I can apply in future. This experience

make me feel excited to be a teacher and go to school.
