At the Last Supper, Jesus prayed for his disciples, “that they may all be one, as you, Father, are in me and I in you, that they also may be in us, that the world may believe that you sent me.” Jesus not only wanted His disciples to be united as one, but also stated that the uni-ty of His disciples is necessary if the world is to believe in the Gospel. Unfortunately, even in the New Testament we see divisions forming in the Church: ethnic divisions, eco-nomic divisions, ideological divisions. As sinful people, we tend to create division, and we need the Holy Spirit to continually give us the grace to overcome them. For ten years now, our parish has held an annual Unity Day as a means of praying that God will heal our divisions. Please plan on joining us on Sept 10 at 11am at DuSable Park for our Unity Day Mass and Picnic. Also note that, because of the Unity Day Mass, there will be NO 10:00 or 11:30 Mass in the church on Sept 10.

As the Eucharist unites us as one Body in Christ, may we faithfully live and share the Gospel.

Latin America Apostolate

In 1956, Archbishop Ritter sent three priests from St. Lou-is to serve as missionaries in La Paz, Bolivia. Archbishop Ritter would later call this the most important decision of his twenty-three years as a bishop. Since then, numer-ous priests and religious from St. Louis, including Fr. Don, have served the people of Latin America. Because of the high poverty rate in Bolivia, our priests who serve there rely on contributions from the people of the Arch-diocese in order to support their work. Today, every parish in the Archdiocese is taking a collection to support the Latin America Apostolate. As Catholics, all of us are called to help spread the Gospel. While we cannot all travel the world as missionaries, we can all support those who do by our prayers and material support. Thank you for your support of the Latin America Apostolate. Our priests and the people they serve are extremely grateful.

Each year, a Las Posadas procession takes place along Main Street. Las Posadas is a Hispanic custom wherein people reenact Mary and Joseph seeking shelter at the inn. This candlelit procession is a community event, bring-ing together various churches and groups in St. Charles for a beautiful public witness of the faith. The organizers have contacted us asking for help from our parishioners. They are looking for a few children to dress as angels and shepherds. They are also looking for people to help with crowd control and to sell candles. If you are interested in helping, please contact Fr. Dotson.

Night at the Derby

Make sure to leave room on your social calendar for

our Annual Night at the Derby.

This will be taking place on Saturday, September 9th

in the gym.

This event is always a lot of fun and the monies

raised support our parish school.

We hope to see you all there.

EVERY LIFE IS SACRED AND A GIFT FROM GOD, whether young or old, born or unborn, black or white, legal or illegal, Jewish, Christian, Muslim or Atheist.

In light of the recent election, there is a great di-vide in our country. We need to pray for peace, unity and mercy. On Wednesday evenings, there is always a bi-lingual rosary at 5:45 and a bi-lingual Mass or Communion Service at 6:15 p.m.

We will offer all these prayers and Masses to the intention of healing our country. Please come to-gether as a community of acceptance for ALL per-sons.

The Transfiguration of the Lord– August 6, 2017

What a way to start a marriage! Jane no sooner arrived at her new home then she discovered she might lose it. Her husband, Christophe, had not only inherited the title of baron but enormous debts as well. But Jane had not come to the marriage empty-handed. She brought with her a deep faith instilled by her father who made daily religious discussion fun, allowing the children to talk about anything -- even controversial topics. She also brought a good-hearted way that made a friend comment, "Even stupid jokes were funny when she told them."

These qualities helped the twenty-year-old French woman take charge by personally organizing and supervising every detail of the estate, a method which not only brought the fi-nances under control but won her employees' hearts as well. Despite the early financial worries, she and her husband shared "one heart and one soul." They were devoted to each other and to their four children.

One way Jane shared her blessings was by giving bread and soup personally to the poor who came to her door. Often people who had just received food from her would pretend to leave, go around the house and get back in line for more. When asked why she let these people get away with this, Jane said, "What if God turned me away when I came back to him again and again with the same request?"

Her happiness was shattered when Christophe was killed in a hunting accident. Before he died, her hus-band forgave the man who shot him, saying to the man, "Don't commit the sin of hating yourself when you have done nothing wrong." The heartbroken Jane, however, had to struggle with forgiveness for a long time. At first she tried just greeting him on the street. When she was able to do that, she invited him to her house. Finally she was able to forgive the man so completely that she even became godmother to his child.

These troubles opened her heart to her longing for God and she sought God in prayer and a deepening spiritual life. Her commitment to God impressed Saint Francis de Sales, the bishop who became her director and best friend. Their friendship started before they even met, for them saw each other in dreams, and contin-ued in letters throughout their lives.

With Francis' support, Jane founded the Visitation order for women who were rejected by other orders because of poor health or age. She even accepted a woman who was 83 years old. When people criticized her, she said, "What do you want me to do? I like sick people myself; I'm on their side." She believed that people should have a chance to live their calling regardless of their health.

Still a devoted mother, she was constantly concerned about the materialistic ways of one of her daugh-ters. Her daughter finally asked her for spiritual direction as did may others, including an ambassador and her brother, an archbishop. Her advice always reflected her very gentle and loving approach to spirituality:

"Should you fall even fifty times a day, never on any account should that surprise or worry you. Instead, ever so gently set your heart back in the right direction and practice the opposite virtue, all the time speaking words of love and trust to our Lord after you have committed a thousand faults, as much as if you had commit-ted only one. Once we have humbled ourselves for the faults God allows us to become aware of in ourselves, we must forget them and go forward."

She died in 1641, at sixty-nine years of age. She is the patron saint of forgotten people; in-law prob-lems; loss of parents; parents separated from children; widows

In the USA, Jane Frances de Chantal's feast day was moved to August 12 in order to celebrate the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe on December 12.

Activities This Week/ Actividades de esta Semana

Borromeo Backpacks Thank you to all our generous and loving parishioners who took a tag and are going to help a family get their children off to school with the many needed supplies of the year. It is not easy nor inexpensive to raise a family, and we are so grateful for all the help our parish is able to give the less fortunate. All items have been re-ceived by this ministry, and we are so blessed to have such loving parishioners, who genuinely care for one another. This is an example of SCB showing the love of Jesus to one another.

Important Notice

The first Monday in September is Labor Day and we will not be having a Baptism Prep Meeting for our English speaking parishioners who are wanting to have a child baptized. This meeting will instead be held on Monday, August 28, 2017 at 7 p.m. in the Church Office. Regarding our Platicas meetings for Hispanics, there will be no meeting on Sunday, September 10, as we will be celebrating Unity day Mass at DuSable Park.

Intercessional Prayer to our Saint of the Week

Saint Jane, you forgave the man who killed your hus-band. Help me learn to forgive a particular person in my life who has caused me harm. You know how diffi-cult it is to forgive. Help me to take the steps you took to welcome this person back into my life. Amen

Fr. Mike Schmitz shares important insights on the meaning of Christ’s Cross. He shows how God’s rescue mission for us includes the need for each person to embrace his own cross in order to reestablish trust in the Father and the understanding that love requires sacrifice. It also includes a bonus segment on Stations of the Cross, which fea-tures reflections on the Lord’s Passion and Death, accompanied by moving audio dramatizations from the Truth and Life Audio Bible. Prayerfully, consider purchasing this CD on the value of Human Life. They are in the Narthex for a minimum donation of $4.00. There will be more topics and CDs available in the upcoming weeks. These CDs are from the Augustine Institute. If you write a check, make it our to our Parish. Thanks for your in-terest now and in the coming weeks.

WHO IS IT FOR?

– For those non-baptized who wish to become mem-bers of the Catholic Church? - For those who were baptized but for some reason were neither prepared for nor received the other Sacra-ments of Initiation –Holy Eucharist and Confirmation.

Weekly sessions are held from September to May. It includes among others: catechetical sessions, “Breaking open the word of God” after the homily on Sundays during Advent and experiences of the life of the parish. If you know someone who may be interested in be-coming a Catholic or who has not received their Com-munion or Confirmation, encourage them to contact the parish office for further information or Sister Raquel at [email protected].

Your Loving Sacrifices Make All The Difference

August 6—The Transfiguration of the Lord In the Gospel, Jesus says: “There is no need for them to go away; give them some food yourselves,” and taking the five loaves and two fish, he blest them and gave them to the disci-ples to feed the crowd. Know that your gift to the Society of St. Vin-cent de Paul to help those living in poverty touches many lives just like the loaves and fishes.

WE THANK EACH OF YOU for the great love you show to our Borromeo Family carrying on the work of Jesus and to those in need-by the generosity you display when you share your

Treasure, and all God’s gifts to you, given for others.

Today’s liturgy invites us to celebrate the feast of the Transfiguration of the Lord. This feast calls to our atten-tion the importance of this event in Jesus’ life, further af-firmed by its report in each of the Synoptic Gospels: Mat-thew, Mark, and Luke. In Cycle A, the reading for this feast is taken from the Gospel of Matthew. The Transfiguration occurs after Peter confesses his belief that Jesus is the Messi-ah and after Jesus predicts his Passion. In each of these Gos-pels, a discussion of the cost of discipleship precedes the Transfiguration. In each Gospel, Jesus takes three of his disciples—Peter, James, and John—to a high mountain. While they are there, Elijah and Moses appear and converse with Je-sus. Elijah and Moses are both significant figures in the his-tory of Israel. Moses led the Israelites out of slavery in Egypt and received from Yahweh the Ten Commandments. Moses represents the Law, which guides the lives of the Jewish people. Elijah is one of the most important proph-ets of Israel who helped the Israelites stay faithful to Yah-weh, and some believed that Elijah’s return would signal the coming of the Messiah for the Jewish people. The ap-pearance of these two figures from Israel’s history indicated Jesus’ continuity with the Law and the prophets. They also reveal that Jesus is the fulfillment of all that was promised to the people of Israel. Upon witnessing Jesus’ Transfiguration and seeing Jesus with Elijah and Moses, an awestruck Peter offered to construct three tents for them when a voice from Heaven affirms that Jesus is "my beloved Son" and commands the disciples to listen to him. In each of the reports of the Transfiguration, Jesus instructed the disciples to keep secret what they had seen until after "the Son of Man has been raised from the dead." Until they witnessed Jesus’ Passion and Death, the disciples could not possibly understand what he meant by being "raised from the dead." We, however, have the benefit of hindsight. In our hearing of the Transfiguration Gospel, we see an anticipation of Jesus’ Resurrection, a foreshadowing of Christ’s glory in Heaven, and the promise of our own resurrection.

August 6, 2017 - The Transfiguration of the Lord

“And he was transfigured before them; his face shone like the sun and his clothes became white as light.” - MATTHEW 17:2

Just as the moon reflects the light of the sun, we should reflect Christ’s light to the world. When we receive the Eucharist, the body and blood of Jesus, we are called to be supernatural to reflect His love, mercy and forgiveness to others. When we are grateful for all that God has given us, generosity flows through us because we are made in God’s image.

Who is a Catechist? A catechist is a person of faith who lives the baptismal call by sharing his/her faith with others. They help bring others to Christ through the traditions and teachings of the Catholic faith. By being a catechist. You will find many unexpected blessings. Here are a few good reasons why you should become a catechist . . .

Our baptism calls you to share in Jesus’ ministry You have much to share with those you’ll teach. Besides, you’ll have opportunities to share

faith with other catechists Children, teens, and adults in today’s world, more than ever, need to hear the Good News of

Jesus and need to encounter good role models of faith. Today’s catechetical textbooks/resources offer outstanding support You’ll be challenged, you’ll have fun and you’ll make new friends but most of all you’ll be helping people deep-

en their relationship with Jesus You’ll be sharing with others 2000-year-old tradition that continues to changes lives Jesus sent us to “go

and teach all nations” A Catechist is a person that:

Loves God~ And, desires a deeper knowledge of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit Ponders the Gospel~ And, finds joy sharing life stories that echo the Good News. Participates in the Eucharist~ And, is humbly aware of living the Works of Mercy Is a practicing Catholic~ And, feels an inner-nudge to learn more about our faith Is a parent, grandparent, godparent, single person, college student~ etc. Has not necessarily studied theology and Scripture, or an experienced teacher

Let catechists tell you for themselves... “With no experience, no time, no great knowledge of my faith, I had every good reason to say “no”. But,

when I knew my kid’s class needed help, I said I’d do it for one year. So here I am, years later. “In helping to meet a need in our parish, God has been filling my need to belong to our community and grow in

my faith.” What is the commitment of the Catechist, Catechist assistant and/or group facilitator?

Copyright (c) J. S.
