Epistle Reading: Hebrews 13:7-16
Brethren, Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God; consider the outcome of their lives, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and for ever. Do not bew led away by diverse and strange teachings; for it is well that the heart be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited their adherents. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat. For the bodies of those animals whose blood is brought into the sanctuary by the high priest as a sacrifice for sin are burned outside the camp. So Jesus also suffered outside the gate in order to sanctify the people through his own blood. Therefore let us go forth to him outside the camp and bear the abuse he endured. For here we have no lasting city, but we seek the city which is to come. Through him then let us continually offer up a sacrifice of praise to God, that is, the fruit of lips that acknowledge his name. Do not neglect to do good and to share what you have, for such sacrifices are pleasing to God.
Gospel Reading: Saint John 17:1-13 Let us attend, At that time, Jesus lifted up his eyes to heaven and said, “Father, the hour has come; glorify you Son that the Son may glorify you, since you have given him power over all flesh, to give eternal life to all whom you have given him. And this is eternal life, that hey know you the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent. I glorified you on earth, having accomplished the work which you gave me to do; and now, Father, you glorify me in your own presence with the glory which I had with you before the world was made. I have manifested your name to the men whom you gave me out of the world; yours they were, and you gave them to me, and they have kept your word. Now they know that everything that you have given me is from you; for I have given them the words which you gave me, and they have received them and know in truth that I came from you; and they have believed that you did send me. I am praying for them; I am not praying for the world but for those whom you have given me, for they are mine; all mine are yours, and yours are min, and I am glorified in them. And now I am no more in the world, but they are in the world, and I am coming to you. Holy Father, keep them in your name, which you have given me, that they may be one, even as we are one. While I was with them, I kept them in your name, which you have given me; I have guarded them, and none of them is lost but the son of perdition, that the scripture might be fulfilled. But now I am coming to you and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.

ECUMENICAL COUNCIL Q: What considerations must the Church deal with to have a General Ecumenical Council in our day and age? What would be the addenda? What difficul-ties must be overcome to make this a reality? A: A you may know, the last recognized Ecumenical of the Church was held in 787, though other councils have been called, have taken place, and have a measure of authority. Sone, in fact, were called as councils, but the consciousness of the Church has either completely rejected them, on the one hand, or simply has not accorded them ecumenical stature. No effort is being made in our times to call an Ecumenical Council. You may have heard of the forth-coming “Great and Holy Council.” This is not con-ceived as an Ecumenical Council but has a purely Orthodox contrast, nearly all Ecumenical Councils were called in connection with the need to define some major doctrinal teaching of the Church. Usually, this was provoked by a false (heretical) teaching, which was disturbing the inner life of the Church, on a very wide scale, raising question about fundamental Church teaching. Today, of course, the Church has many prob-lems and issues to confront. But there are none which tear at the very fabric of the belief, life and faith of the Orthodox Church from within. If asked about such major questions, most theologically trained Orthodox will respond very much alike. There are always those who do not express the mind and consciousness of the Orthodox Church properly, in various different locali-ties. But we do not have a false, or heretical teaching, recognized within the Orthodox Church as destroying its fundamental faith. Therefore, there is no felt need for an Ecumenical Council at this time.
If such a need did arise, however, there would, of course, be difficulties to overcome. The most im-portant, it seems to me, would be the practical arrange-ments of place, time and circumstance, given the precar-ious political circumstances under which the Orthodox Churches now live. Not one of the Patriarchates is in a truly free or friendly environment. It would be a ma-jor undertaking which would present serious problems. Fortunately, there does not seem to be a need for it at this time. (NOTE: A Great and Holy Council of the Ortho-dox Church was called by Ecumenical Patriarch Bar-tholomew of Constantinople and was held in Crete in June, 2016)

THE SIMPLER WAY “While everyone was amazed at all that he was doing, he said to his disciples, ‘Let these words sink into your ears: The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into human hands.’ But they did not understand this say-ing; its meaning was concealed from them, so that they could not perceive it. And they were afraid to ask him about this saying. An argu-ment arose among them as to which one of them was the greatest. But Jesus, aware of their inner thoughts, took a little child and put it by his side, and said to them. ‘Whoever welcomes this child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes the one who sent me; for the least among all of you is the greatest.’ John answered, ‘Master, we saw someone casting out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him, because he does not follow us.’ But Jesus said to him, ‘Do not stop him; for whoever is not against you is for you.’” (Luke 9:43-50) In this passage, while His disciples are focused on their status and prerogatives, the God-Man is focused on one thing: His cross, before which He is “to be betrayed into hu-man hands,” and at which He is to become “the least among all,” like the nameless “little child” at Hissidein that moment. And so this situation continues throughout Church History, even until today: We worry about “our” status, as to which one of “us” is the greatest, and as to those who do or do not
“follow with us,”—while the Lord speaks to us of His cross, of surrender “into human hands” hostile to us; of smallness before com-petitive brethren; and of acceptance of those who “do not follow us,” but are “not against us.” So He’s speaking of one, simple thing, while we are burdened and blinded with our many other issues. Today let me let Christ simplify things for me, by His Cross. I let go of pointless bat-tles with flesh and blood, and take up His cross-carrying way, which brings me peace. “Take my yoke upon you, and learn from me,” the Lord says to me this morning, “for I am meek and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” (Matthew 11:29-30)

PARISH NEWS
ICONOSTAS COMMITTEE For several months, the Iconostas Committee, consisting of Father Dan, Katerina Hulme, Diane Rodrigues, Nancy Coons, Carole Herrlich and Joyce Merletti, has been at work on a design for the iconostas of our new church. The proposed design has been sub-mitted to New World Byzantine Studios of Charles-ton, SC. This company will produce a detailed plan that will be followed by the local craftsmen who will complete the iconostas. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of our par-ish, John Fillipakis, a Florida-based iconographer, was commissioned to paint a number of new Byzantine style icons. These icons will be used in our new icono-stas, as well as four additional feast day icons and a larger Last Supper icon that he will complete for us. The committee has found sponsors for all five of these new icons.
PREGNANCY RESOURCE CENTER
Early in the summer, Carole Herrlich, Nancy Coons and Joyce Merletti visited the Corning Pregnancy Resource Center, where they were given a tour and learned about the center’s services available to young women who find themselves with an unplanned preg-nancy. These clients are treated with kindness, concern, and confidentiality by the staff throughout their pregnancies, and some services continue afterward. It was decided to suggest this to our parish as a very worthwhile charity. Several weeks ago, Father and Pani Joan and Don Kakretz joined the others to attend an evening event at Watson Homestead where they heard a num-
ber of speakers and learned even more about the work of the Pregnancy Resource Center. Watch the Sunday bulletin in the weeks ahead for ways that our parish can help this charity.
