SECTIONI:GENERALINFORMATION TheprograminSchoolandClinicalChildPsychology(SCCP)attheUniversityofAlbertaisintendedforstudentsinterestedinpracticingaspsychologistswhosefocusischildrenandadolescents.SCCPisaspecializationofpsychologydevotedtothediagnosis,prevention,remediationandameliorationofsocial,emotional,cognitive,behavioural,andinterpersonaldifficultieswithchildrenandadolescentsinschool,clinicalorcommunitysettings.Ouraimistointegratescienceandpracticeandtodeveloptheawarenessandskillstoworkwithdiversepopulationsinschoolsandvariousclinicalsettings.TheSCCPprogramprovidesstudentswithasolidcorefoundationtopracticeasschoolandclinicalchildpsychologists,andinvolvesdevelopmentofassessmentandinterventionskills,suchasinstructionalinterventions,cognitivebehaviouraltherapy,andotherchildandfamilyfocusedinterventions,necessaryforworkwithchildrenandyouth.TheSCCPcorefaculty,withthesupportofprogramaffiliates,providestudentswiththeopportunitytodevelopcompetencyinalloftheseareasandalsohelpthemfurtherdeveloptheirownareasofspecialization.SCCPPROGRAMMISSION TheSchoolandClinicalChildPsychology(SCCP)programisbasedonascientist-practitionermodelofpsychologicaltraining.TheSCCPprogramemphasizestheintegrationofscienceandpractice.Wearecommittedtotrainingstudentstotakeascientificapproachtopsychologicalpracticeandtouseknowledgegainedthroughpsychologicalpracticetoinformscientificinquiry. ThespecificmissionoftheSCCPprogramistoprovidestudentswiththeoreticalfoundation,researchsciencetraining,andprofessionaltraininginpreparationforpsychologicalworkwithchildren,adolescents,andfamiliesinschool,clinical,andothercommunitysettings.Theprogramisdesignedtoprovidetraininginpsychoeducationalandclinicalassessment,therapy,psychosocialandacademicinterventions,professionalconsultation,andprevention. SECTIONV:STUDENTEVALUATIONThefacultyprovidecontinual,timelyappraisaltoensurethatgraduatestudentshavethenecessaryskillstobecompetentpsychologists.Ongoingcontactandpositiveworkingrelationshipsbetweenstudentsandfacultyareimportanttothestudentevaluationprocess.GENERALThepoliciesandproceduresusedtoevaluatestudentsfollowguidelinesestablishedbytheFacultyofGraduateStudiesandResearchoftheUniversityofAlberta.Formalevaluationinvolvesawardinggrades,althoughthisisoftensupplementedwithsuggestions,commentsandotherverbalfeedback.StudentsaregradedfromA+throughFinmostcourses.AgradeofC+istheminimumpassinggradeforallgraduatestudentsatthemaster’sanddoctorallevel.Mostevaluationsaregivenwithincourses.Courserequirementsandtheirweightedcontributiontothefinalgradearestipulatedinawrittensyllabusatthebeginningofterm.Evaluationsofcourseworkaredonepromptlyandgiventostudentsinclass.Studentsareinvitedtoconsultprivatelywiththecourseinstructorformoredetailedfeedback.Someevaluationsarenotlettergraded,forinstance,thedoctoralcandidacyexaminationandoralexaminationofthedissertation.Bothoftheseexamsusea“pass/passwithstipulatedrevisions/fail”systemthatisstandardpolicyinCanadianuniversities.Theevaluatingcommitteeinformsthestudentofitsdecisionimmediatelyaftertheexam.Inpracticumcourses,supervisorsprovideawrittenevaluationofthestudent’sperformanceinpractice,whichformoneaspectoftheoverallevaluation.Supervisorsdiscussthesedirectlywithstudentsbeforesubmittingthemtothecourseinstructor.REMEDIATIONPROCEDURESIncaseswhereastudentencountersdifficultieswithcourseorprogramdemands,thestudentwillfirstmeetwiththecourseinstructororprogramadvisor/supervisor,whowillworktogetherwiththestudenttodevelopaplanforresolvingthedifficulties(e.g.,throughprovidingthestudentwithadditionaltime,support,andresources)andmonitoringthestudent’sprogress.Inmostcases,difficultiesareresolvedinformallythroughthecollaborationofthestudentandinstructor.Fordifficultiesthatpersist,thestudent,courseinstructor,and/orprogramadvisor/supervisormayapproachtheGraduateCoordinatororAssociateChairoftheDepartmentofEducationalPsychologyforfurtherassistance.TheGraduateCoordinator/AssociateChairmayrequestajointmeetingwiththestudentandinstructor/programadvisor/supervisortodevelopaplanforresolvingthedifficultiesandmonitoringthestudent’sprogress.Furthermore,doctoralstudentsinSCCPcompleteanannualprogressreport(TamarackMemo)detailingtheirprogressinmeetingacademicgoals.Themonitoringofthesereportsbytheareafacultymemberscansometimeshelptoforestalldifficultiesbeforetheyarise.Fordifficultiesrelatedspecificallytoastudent’sperformanceinapracticumcourse,aremedialactionplanmaybedeveloped,implemented,andmonitored,asdescribedinthisHandbookunderSectionVandAppendixD-SchoolandClinicalChildPsychologyPracticumRemedialActionPlan.ACADEMICSUPERVISIONSupervisorsserveastheprimarycontactbetweenthestudentsandtheprogram.Thesupervisorworks
