  • Planning on a Holiday?Initially feared to become the worst advertising downturn in many decades, the “advertising recession”, which was building in early 2009, was much shorter lived than expected.

In the latter part of 2009, as our economy continued to outperform other OECD countries, there was growing confidence that advertising activity was poised to catch up to Australia’s already buoyant economy. By early 2010, Nielsen ad trends reporting clearly showed that many marketing sectors are posting strong advertising increases year-on-year.

Spend has been led by Australia’s largest category, Retail ($1.0 billion), which accounted for more than 21 cents of every advertising dollar. Across the Top 10 categories there were some major growth stories, including Motor Vehicles (+11%), Finance (+25%), Real Estate (+19%), Food (+13%), Communications (+8%) and Insurance (+12%).

In Focus: Travel and Accommodation Spend

Travel & Accommodation slipped two places to be the sixth largest category in the first half of 2010. This fall was due to growth across a number of the major categories, and came in spite of a 3.8% increase in overall ad spend for the category.

Driving the growth were top ranked sectors Travel Agents-Service & Tour (+15%) and Tourist Authorities (+11%), while Airlines overall declined by 10% – due mainly to sharp reductions in activity for Virgin Blue Airlines.

Top ranked Qantas increased main media activity by an impressive 61% year-on-year to jump several places and overtake a number of last year’s top advertisers, including second ranked Flight Centre, which decreased spend by 11%, sister airline Jetstar and competitor Virgin Blue Airlines, which saw a substantial 43% decline in activity year-on-year.

Nielsen recently released the “Australian Nielsen Top 20 Advertisers Report”.

Your shopping helps Nielsen to gather information on Australian’s purchasing habits. From Homescan data we are able to calculate that:

In a typical week 8 in 10 households shop in a supermarket and 6 in 10 shop in other types of stores.? ?
