The Commonwealth, which accounts for 30% of the world population, has showna stubborn refusal to address the human rights of its lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) citizens. Of the 78 countries worldwide that

still criminalise consensual and private adult same-sex sexual acts, over a half areCommonwealth members states. Nearly 80% of the countries making up the Com-monwealth – 41 out of 53 - still maintain such laws and show few signs of acceptingthat the organisation’s Charter commitment to opposing ‘all forms of discrimination’must include discrimination against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex(LGBTI) people.

As I write this month’s columnwe are enjoying some hot sum-mer sunshine! Let’s hope it

lasts throughout the summer and wecan make full use of the outside tablesand chairs which are popping uparound our favourite scene venues andbars. As we enter Aug it’s also themonth where Edinburgh truly shinesas it plays host to the biggest arts fes-tival in the world. Keep an eye on theScotsGay fringe website for all the re-views. Also the second part of our topten must see shows will be in this edi-tion of the magazine. So let’s go to it!

We start with the Newtown Bar,which as confirmed in the last issuehas now closed. The days leading up tothe 1st Jul closure were a mixture ofcelebration as faces old and new bothbehind and in front of the bar returnedto bid an emotional farewell. As thefinal last orders were called there werea few tears at the passing of a Scenestaple. Now the venue is being handedover to the Hanging Bat for a brandnew look and feel we can only wonderwhen we will see the likes of the NewTown Bar again.

However, elsewhere on the scene, things are going from strength to

strength. TheStreet has vari-ous themeevenings andawaits the returnof SaturdayNight Beaver(the 19th Jul edi-tion beingrescheduled shortly). Coupled with someof the best food and drinks offers, thismakes the Street a good stopping placeduring the festival or for late night drinksin the Street Club (access fromBroughton Street). The Street is alsoplaying host to the Fringe with CabaretRoulette. This brings the best of the WestEnd cabaret circuit to Edinburgh from2nd-12th of Aug starting at 6.30pm. Alsoat the Street is Sorry I’m A Lady whichblends together a range of music andcabaret again running from the 2nd-12that 7.45pm. Joining the bill is Magic andTea with an Evil Genius which showcasesup-close magic and storytelling. That’son most days at 2.45pm. Check out Ed-fringe.com for all the details. Finally atthe Street is The Mother of the Priest, adark solo play based on the book TheMother by Nobel Prize Winner GraziaDeledda. This powerhouse of duty, fam-ily, passion and spirituality will run everyday of the Fringe at 5.15pm.

Moving to Chalky’s, as well as the regu-lar drinks promos and the best DJs andthe greatest atmosphere on the scene.Chalky’s is also playing host as an Edin-burgh Fringe venue. With a productionof Deep Throat Live headlining their of-ferings. This, play inspired by the 1972cult classic movie that shocked theworld, has hot action and cool music andis going to be a must see production.Running at Chalky’s 2nd-24th of Aug at6pm. Entry is free with a donation on exitor book via the Edfringe box office for£5.

Over the road at CC Blooms, things aregoing from strength to strength. Withan excellent bistro menu during the dayand early evening giving way to someamazing drinks offers and club nights.Sunday sees the return of the Church ofHigh Kicks. Also don’t forget to pick upthe CC’s Loyalty card which gives 15% offdrinks and 25% off food.

Next door in Habana, they are continu-ing to produce some of the best offerson the scene for drinks and when the sunis shining it can be tough going getting aseat outside but it always worth a look into see what’s going down.

Down at Planet, it continues to be thenumber 1 pre club bar with drink promosa plenty and with its sister venue,Chalky’s, playing host to fringe showsPlanet will be an excellent stopping pointfor a pre performance drink.

Finally don’t forget when you want toget away from all things Fringe, dropinto Café Nom de Plume for the best inlunches, dinners and suppers and a relax-ing drink overlooking the gardens. Or ifa pint of real ale is more your choice, head to The Regent for a bit of rest andrelaxation.

So there we have it! As the busiestmonth in the city approaches there ismuch to indulge in and sample the manyartistic opportunities on offer across thecity. I hope you all have an amazingFringe and check out the second part ofour top ten must see productions also inthis issue.

Summer 2014 in this wee corner ofScotland and we know it’s herebecause the rain is getting

warmer. This month we delve into GMH,hear about the success that was DorothyDoes Oz and look ahead to the nextmonth on the ‘deen scene.

Well my loves, what a month ithas been! And the next fewweeks promise to be the

busiest and most colourful Glasgow hasever seen! Let thegames begin andmay the odds beever in your favour!

Pride Weekendbegan with a humanrights conferenceorganised by theEquality Networkand Pride House, with representativesfrom Common-wealth nationswhere being gay isillegal, Peter Tatchelland Scottish coun-terparts discussedand debated what can be done to ad-vance the cause of LGBT rights amongstthose nations.

It rained and rained and rained, howeverthat did not dampen the spirits of thecrowd who turned out to enjoy our Pridein Glasgow. Alongside myself and An-drew Agnew, the Krankies had everyonerolling about in laughter, X factor starsAmelia Lily, Marcus Collins and especiallyLucy Spraggan kept the crowd’s spiritshigh throughout the day! I’m sure

Katie’s Bar had an influx of lady loversall hot under the collar looking for re-freshment after Lucy’s set. Katie’s alsohad one of the Pussycat Dolls spinning

the decks andtickling the fan-cies of its cus-tomers thismonth.

U n d e r g r o u n dBar in partner-ship with TheGallery and TheCourt Bar, heldthe final of PrideIdol and therewere two winnerswho went for-ward to thecabaret stage atPride. There has

definitely been a greater sense of com-munity and partnership between all thebars and clubs this year, which is fantas-tic.

Menergy @ AXM had the busiest nightever with hurricane Bianca Del Rio rollinginto to town - it was a very hot andsweaty affair but Miss Del Rio blew thecrowd away! With warm up perform-ances from the delicious Tom Harlow andthe fabulous Buffalo Girls! Speakeasyalso had a very hot and sweaty affair but

of a different type, pornstar Scott Hunter wasmaking all the boys weakat the knees when hegraced Glasgow with hisrugged handsomenessand bulging talents!

I would also like to take amoment to thank every-one for their support andencouragement aroundSTV Glasgow’s decisionto decline an invitationfor me to appear on theirchat show the eveningbefore pride as ‘having a drag queenwouldn’t be appropriate for children’ Icannot tell how it felt to know the com-munity had my back. It is a reminder ofthe work we still have to do to shake offthe remnants of the past. So thank you!

Until next month, enjoy the Common-wealth Games, fly your rainbow flags, beproud, be loud and above all… get outand enjoy yourself! Glasgow’s scene haseverything on offer: so go get yours!

Gay Men’s Health in parts of Scotlandhave had funding completely or partiallycut by the NHS trusts in those areas butI am assured that all services withinGrampian are running as normal whereDeejay, Colin, Aidan and the volunteersare doing an amazing job of making gay

and bisexualguys in theregion awareof servicesthat are avail-able as wellas handingout free con-doms at vari-ous venuesand locationsaround theregion. Theteam weredue to be outand about inElgin on 26thJul andLossiemouthon 28th Julwith testing

and outreach services available on thosedays, 8th Aug will see them at CheerzBar for a fabulous drag game show andsexual health education event.

GMH are also on the look out for guys totake part in a photo shoot for an onlinecampaign with the theme “You are real,You are beautiful”. They are looking forguys of all shapes and sizes as this is nota campaign using the usual stereotypicallook that most magazines and online re-sources use. If you are interested in tak-ing part or to find out more about theservices available at 246 George Streetand via outreach you can call them onAberdeen (01224) 930355 or E-mail:[email protected]

I had the absolute pleasure of goingalong to see Dorothy Does Oz at CheerzNightclub the other week and it wasamazingly performed by a very polishedand preened cast including all of yourfavourite local drag artistes and sceneentertainers. It was laugh a minute fromstart to finish, so a huge thank you toBrian for the amazing script and the rest

of the cast for bringing it to life. I for surelook forward to your next show.

Cheerz Bar has so much entertainmentcoming your way too including JoO’Meara on 8th Aug and lots moreplanned but don’t forgot the fabulousresident entertainment team with somany talented people including themany faces and wigs of Miss Romy, theman that can hit all the notes AidenSutherland, Double Trouble Miss CherryBakewell and Scarlet Diamonte Plus theDJ’s playing all your tunes: Steve Motion,Craig Wren, Mark Davidson and KevinThorburn. Sorry if I have forgotten any-one! Keep up to date with events andhappenings at Cheerz via facebook andtwitter @cheerztweet

Did Scotland really bringthe Scottish Enlighten-ment to the world; have

five universities to England’s twoand become the most literatecitizens in Europe by the eigh-teenth century? If so, shouldn’twe be welcoming independencewith a bit more gusto instead ofletting ourselves be admonishedlike naughty children asking forsomething we don’t deserve.‘Aggressive’ CyberNats sharingtheir opinions after one toomany; shameless ‘opportunists’trying to hoist our flag behindAndy Murray after his win atWimbledon or ‘subsidy junkies’and ‘squanderers’ lavishly dolingout free prescriptions and carefor the elderly. (“Whilst I’m ex-pected to pay for it all”, a ratherindignant English friend re-minded me between mouthfulsof Premier cru on her clippedlawn bordered by red Gerani-ums, white Bleeding Hearts andblue Lobelia). I’m tired of conde-scending men in suits who can’tfind their own way round a nose-clipper telling me what’s best forScotland. Time we saw somewomen nailing their name to themast. I’d like to see a SusanBoyle moment, when onBritain’s Got Talent she bleweveryone away with a mezzo so-prano voice leaving Simon Cow-ell’s fingers still hovering overthe reject button.

Women have been hiddenamongst the radicals and free-thinkers of the 17-or-so secularsocieties across Scotland in the19th century. The societies, some a part of the Scottish Sec-ular Union were joined by Owen-ites, the followers of RobertOwen, forging a peculiarly so-cialist nuance to Scottish secu-larism. Keir Hardie’s parentsregularly attended the GlasgowSecular Society before Kierfound God and helped revive asocial conscience within Christi-anity.

Today, if they’re not just gettingon with life, secularists are morelikely to be found on Facebookand Twitter. In recent surveys onSecular Scotland, up to 85 per-

A Secular Scotlandby Garry Otton

cent voted in support of inde-pendence. When the ScottishSecular Society (SSS) an-nounced it was backing the ma-jority of its members coming outin support of independence, thepress ignored our Chair, SpencerFildes to focus on what thechurches thought about a secu-lar Scotland! Since the Kirk hunga 20-year-old Edinburgh studentfor blasphemy in 1697, the Scot-tish media have always been inthrall to the crucifix and crozier, seeking out the advice of clericson moral matters until only afew years ago, obedientlyadding quotes from Kirk andCatholic spokesmen under everystory requiring a moral angle.Today, the Kirk musters just 900people to attend their debateson independence before an-other press release goes outwith several press stories follow-ing. Soon after, the Kirk Moder-ator squeals he has had peopleurging the Kirk to say if they’refor or against independence andit makes headline news on Re-porting Scotland! (Compare thatto when the SSS celebrated30,000 signatures demanding

the release of Scotsman Mohammad Asghar from aPakistan prison facingcharges of blasphemy andno newspaper printed thestory). What do the mediathink we are all download-ing onto our iPod shuffles?Hymns? Do the Church re-ally have more customersthan Homebase? Had theSSS been asked, theywould have said how de-lighted we were to be sotantalisingly close to walk-ing away with the HolyGrail of secularism in Sepwith just one tick of that‘YES’ box shaking off 26unelected clerics in thehighest legislature of theland. As semi-theocraciesgo, the UK gives Iran agood run for their money.

Scotland should have asecular constitution

guaranteeing freedom of reli-gion and freedom from it.

As Secular Scottish Society con-stitutionalist and research direc-tor of the ConstitutionalCommission, Elliot Bulmer said:“The electoral system for theHouse of Commons is unrepre-sentative, the composition ofthe House of Lords is indefensi-ble, the powers of the Crown areexcessive, secretive and unac-countable, rights are fragile, andprivileges rife.”

Mr Bulmer added: “There is a di-rect connection between allow-ing rulers to make up the rules asthey go along and the failure ofthe UK state to serve the com-mon good. The banking crisis, the expenses scandal, phonehacking, illegal surveillance, per-sistent unemployment andwage cuts, rising inequality, cor-porate lobbying, and the de-struction of public infrastructureand services – all point to a statethat has fallen into the hands ofan unchecked oligarchy, bound

by its own self-interest.”

In an independent Scotland, our State Broadcaster will nolonger be able to throw aswitch at Broadcasting Houseat half-six so we can ‘seewhat’s happening in your re-gion’, as the UK split up likeexcited children so Jackie Birdcan report with a rictus grinan egg-and-spoon race inNewton Mearns. We’ll go ourown way while England,Wales and its mad religiousaunt in the attic can maketheir own news. I hope that ifwe do still find our news inter-rupted by patronising‘Thought for the Days’ in amodern Scotland, it is offeredon the grounds of merit andnot simply because you arereligious.

And what of the head of theChurch of England, Elizabeththe Second, by the Grace ofGod, of Great Britain, Irelandand the British Dominions be-yond the Seas Queen, De-fender of the Faith? She willgo on showing off her colour-ful twin-sets and eye-catch-ing millinery in a titular rolejust as she does throughoutall of her Commonwealthcountries. Just not at our ex-pense.

And one more thing: SayingYES to independence is notvoting to put the SNP inpower: It is empowering us toensure we can vote for a partythat will deliver secular fair-ness, freedom and equality. Iwelcome the challenge of anew Scottish Enlightenment, and I’m sure too, so would ourradical freethinking forefathers.

Garry Otton is founder of theScottish Secular Society andauthor of ‘Religious Fascism:The Repeal of Section 28’.

The Umbilical Brothers makea welcome return to thisyear’s Edinburgh Festival afteran absence of 9 years! Thelegendary Australian duo areback and set to mark their re-turn with a brand new show…entitled Kids Show (not forKids)! However, this is onethat is certainly not for chil-dren. It will be laced with ma-ture themes, violence, frequent coarse language andtime permitting, face-painting!The show itself has been cre-ated out of the wealth of ex-perience they have inchildren’s entertainment; set-ting out to create a ‘kids’show… for adults! After theydid a year off Broadway inNew York, the producers ofSesame Street approachedthem about Kids’ TV. As aresult they created andstarred in the award-winningNickelodeon/Sesame Work-shop series The Upside Down

Show. This inspired them tocreate a wildly inappropriateversion of kids’ entertain-ment, a show that starts withgood intentions, and ends ina very, very different place

ANDY BELL: IS TORSTENTHE BAREBACK SAINTVenue 1:Assembly, George Square Time:6.30pmPreview:5th AugDates:6th – 16th August

Erasure pop legend Andy Bellhas announced his first everEdinburgh Festival run. Hewill perform for 12 nights atthe Assembly Venue 1. Thedates co-incide with the re-lease of his fourth solo albumTorsten The Bareback Saint,a groundbreaking musicalconcept available from 28thJul 2014 through Strike ForceEntertainment (Cherry RedRecords).

Andy Bell’s performance inthis highly dramatic one-manshow delivers heart-rendingmusical missives direct fromthe pulpit of his outsider life.“Torsten is a semi-immortalpolysexual sensualist and Ilove playing him,” says Bell -“It’s the most challenging

role of my career so far.” Thecutting-edge show is nothowever a closed narrative:subsequent shows will fea-ture different songs andevents in Torsten’s life, allow-ing the audience to discovermore about his complexcharacter and surreal experi-ences.

The theatrical 22 song-cycletells the poignant stories ofsemi-immortal polysexualTorsten, cursed to love manyand get close to none, as hisage-defying nature con-demns him to watch all hisfriends and lovers grow oldand die before him. Ulti-mately he must leave themall to avoid their uneasinessin witnessing that Torstenhimself does not age asevenly. Torsten sings deeplyaffecting expositional songsthat incrementally illuminatethe extraordinarily mysteri-ous life of a man discon-certed by his own bizarreexperience of the nature ofpassing time. “The songs arelike a set of lyrical postcardsfrom the hotspots of mem-ory”, Andy himself explains.

An eternal teenager through-out most of the 20th Century,a growth spurt in the late80s brings Torsten to the ageof 42, then stops again. De-spite the strength of thebody, it’s the spirit that suf-fers, getting old and tired asthe drive and need toachieve gradually abandonhim. The lack of emotional

ties torment his soul, havingno choice but to leave all ofhis many lovers, one by one, before they discover the real-ity of his anomalous condi-tion.
