neighborhood parks the multitude of excellent shows

that come to town rafting golfing vacationing getting

my junk food fix at the State Fair enjoying fresh

picked backyard grown tomatoes and Sloughhouse

corn River Cats games and laughing my head off with

friends while hanging in the backyard I havenrsquot had a

chance to catch my breath let alone crack that great

Your Sacramento Blues Society Events Chair and here we go again for a new ride Yep I canrsquot even express how ex-cited I am for the events we are bringing to the table and I hope you will enjoy the ride along with me and

the rest of the SBS crew

We are developing a new process for our Annual Competition to represent SBS at the International Blues Challenge (IBC) in Memphis TN It is now in effect and I hope that it will gain momentum but we canrsquot do this without your sup-port As you can see by the article listed in this edi-tion we want to find all the talent that was not able to handle the cost of travel to Memphis So we have developed a new procedure to defray those costs

Not perfect but a new start

For the 2012-13 Competition we plan on paying the expenses of sending the Societyrsquos sponsored band to Memphis Yes Pay the expenses Of course how much of the expenses we pay will depend a lot on the size of the band and how much money we raise We are already actively raising money by holding various fundraisers shows and soliciting

ldquoSponsorrdquo donations

We are having 4 ldquopreliminaryrdquo competitions and then a ldquofinalrdquo competition where we will choose our spon-sored band All of these competitions will be held in local venues and are also IBC fundraisers toward funding the band we send to the IBC in Memphis Also there is a Guitar being made by Jobe Guitars with the custom pickups made by 3M products in Marysville and believe me the person who wins this in our raffle process will be the owner of a one-of-a-kind high end guitar I will provide pictures in our later Blue Notes articles We need your participation in these fundraisers to ensure adequate funds and moral support for our partici-pating bands Please spread the word stay tuned to the Sacbluescom website and watch for the SacBluesNews email

Blues In The Schools is on summer break ndash wersquore busy what are you doing Irsquom sure the BITS students and musicians are using some of this down time to dig deeper into the blues Irsquove been keeping up with some of our younger players and where theyrsquore playing through the Sacramento BLUES IN THE SCHOOLS Facebook page (Find us make us your friend) Rosemont and West Campus high school students will be performing for the Old Highway 99 Festival on Saturday July 28 2012 Itrsquos a

real honor that they have been invited to play and we would like to thank Skip Murphy for promoting BITS

and arranging for the young bluesmen to have a paying gig On August 10th we are raffling off a Gibson Epiphone guitar donated to Charity Guitars by Joe Bonamassa

and signed by artists in re-cent SBS shows The pro-ceeds will go directly to the BITS program Tickets have been sold for the past few months and we are ready to pull the winning ticket Be sure to attend the Jimmie Thackery Show on August 10 2012 at the Blue Goose in Loomis to get your ticket Details are listed elsewhere in this issue of the Blue Notes

Blues in the Schools - by Cynthia Jaynes photo by Richard White

I had the opportunity to attend the J Geils Show sponsored by the Sacramento Blues Society (SBS) and Carrera Produc-tions on June 20 2012 at Three Stages in Folsom To say I was excited at the pros-pect of seeing a legend such as J Geils live and in person is an understatement to say the least I had never been to a concert at Three Stages and was very pleased wih the facility It is a beautiful very well-appointed venue with great acoustics and overall sound quality Seating is very comfortable and literally there is not a bad seat in the house

venue on the grounds of Folsom col-lege Mary has arranged for a por-tion of the ticket sales for these re-cent events to be donated to BITS We have received over $2000 in donations which have been used to bring BITS to 5 public schools one academy for special needs students and to the WIND Youth High School for homeless teens Thank you Mary We (the Sacramento Blues Society) enjoy working with you and appreciate your generous support in bringing blues music into schools which are facing depleted arts enrichment programs Carrera Productions obviously supports the blues and our mission to preserve and promote this music we all enjoy The BITS Committee will be updating our Strategic Plan (ya gotta have a plan right) which will hope-fully push the program along to better and brighter places There is much work still to be done and a logi-cal plan makes things run fairly smooth and stay on track The Blues community ndash which includes SBS members and blues lovers in general will often come to BITS with some thoughts on improving our program and exciting things we could do We appreciate all these terrific ideas and the energy and the enthusiasm in which they are presented However there are only a handful of people making BITS happen and we canrsquot possibly do it all at the same time and still move ahead So we must take some time to carefully con-sider and plan where our few resources should go to make the most of what we do have If you are interested in helping BITS achieve our goals in the 20122013 school year please contact Cynthia Jaynes at 916 202-5075 or bitssacbluescom

What a great show in a fabulous theatre The main lineup consisted of J Geils Jeff Pitchell and Gerry Beaudoin (left) as well as a most excellent backup band J Geils was kind enough to sign the Blues In The Schools (BITS) guitar pictured that will soon be raffled off to help raise funds for the BITS program Rich-ard White an SBS represented pho-tographer was permitted backstage and documented the evening with some really great photographs

Jazz and blues vocalist Catherine Russell came into my ldquosonicrdquo view late Im so much the richer for that now comfortable music connection with this native New Yorker I know that after scrutinizing her talent Im the poorer for not having heard this woman sooner But Catherine as they say was a late-bloomer albeit has worked with names that have blinked on mar-quee lights just like her father Luis Russell did Mr Russell was Louis Armstrongs music director in the mid-40s and was a pianist composerarranger and big band leader Catherine Russell sings at Harlows 2708 J Street Fri-day September 21 showtime 7 PM Swell Productions and Capital Public Radio (my old stomping grounds) are making it happen Tickets wwwswell-productionscom

Catherines voice is a unique mixture of what almost seem contrasting qualities Its velvety and smoky yet clean clear---so confident with the music---and spot-on with intonation I like that Coming from a musical family Catherines mother Car-line Ray (a veteran jazz bassist and vocalist) brings it altogether for Catherine with her fathers musical experi-ences early in the 20th century in New Orleans Chicago and New York City Mr Russell and Armstrong were almost the same age born 1902 and 1901 respectively I was pleasantly surprised to hear how Catherine and the ensembles that back her on two CDs (ldquoInside This Heart of Minerdquo and ldquoStrictly Romancinrdquo) capture the es-sence of different kinds of great music that so many of

us love American Popular Songs like ldquoIm In The Mood For Loverdquo and ldquoAs Long As I Liverdquoare given adroit polished readings by Catherine On listen-ing to other tracks her ensemble suggests

something very near to greats from back-in-the-day like Django Rheinhardt Joe Venuti and a little of the more modern sounding Art Van Damme And did I hear something akin to Nat Coles legendary trio Then theres blues and swing---which her father in a big-band kind of way was early into I noticed the jump dixieland and straight ahead as well as a little gospel she sings with her mother Banjo playing sprang from among the instrumentalists on other tracks that spread Russells music concept on these CDs wide and most Americanall performed over the plate and in the pocket Whoa She does nothing not solid and I think the lady could sing it all backwards and still cut it---and wed love it I must even fess-up and say that Catherine does a Duke EllingtonMack David song that Id not heard ldquoLong Strong and Consecutiverdquo It was just one of those things---I missed Well as Ive said for a long time now ldquoTheres no time like the presentrdquo even if the bloomings late When Russell gets to Sacramento I hope shell sing ldquoAll The Cats Join Inrdquo and Fats Wallers ldquoInside This Heart Of Minerdquo Ill be in the audience in rapt attention

Late in The Lonely Night

Tommy McCoy (Earwig Music)

The touchstones for many bluesblues-rock lovers over the last several decades have been The Allman Brothers (whether led by each genera-tional slide maestro DuaneWarrenDerek) and Stevie Ray Vaughan So when you hear the well-travelled singersongwriter and guitaristband leader Tommy McCoy that acknowledgement comes through The title track ldquoLate in The Lonely Night ldquo is a strong minor key alliterative treat that shows off his guitar prow-ess without getting in the way of the songmdashhe is lyrical and his playing supports the lyrics That might be an ob-vious gimme but too many players have a hard time re-membering to do this In eleven songs McCoy never over plays rather his playing shines with taste and knowledge Hammond B-3 player Tim Heding has the goods too and he co-propels this and six other tracks lsquoNever Shoulda Listenedrdquo is a cheeky musical meacutenage agrave trois with singer Karyn Denham and barrelhouse piano woman Liz Pennock I hope this is their You Tube choice Two left field favorites for me are his great versions of juke box ditties from my high school days ndashboth by McCoyrsquos famous fellow Floridiansmdashthe Cornelius Broth-ers and Sister Rose ldquoItrsquos Too Late to Turn Back Nowrdquo and ldquoTreat Her Like a Ladyrdquo These dual hippie RampB hits were funky then and they still are on this disc McCoyrsquos big bold vibrato baritone and his chunky rhythm playing are lots of fun and when he rips off those blistering leads you can just feel the Florida sun grinning

Ron Sorin and the Blue Coast Band

Lake City (Big Lake Records)

This one just keeps getting stronger with each listen Sorin is a born-in-Chicago harp player and longtime side-man but this is his first solo recording Since Sorin ap-parently doesnrsquot sing hersquos done us the favor of drafting vocalist extraordinaire Tad Robinson for seven cuts Robinson has become known more as a soul-man but here he showcases his splendid blues chops The band

CD Reviews

is made up of solid veterans of the blues circuit Ken Say-dak keys Marty Binder drums Harlan Terson bass and Mark Wydra guitar John Brumbach contributes sax on two cuts Pete Benson plays organ on two You are treated to fifteen tracks with only three covers These three are inspired a Duke Ellington ldquoGood Gal Bluesrdquo rdquoIrsquove Got No Stringsrdquo an instrumental that seemed familiar but I have to admit I had to read it was from the Disney movie Pinocchio A harsh trill opens ldquoGimme Dat Harp Boyrdquo before melding into the raw driving riff and vocal of the Captain Beefheart tune The originals donrsquot stray from familiar frameworks of harmonica blues idiom but new twists on old riffs abound in Sorinrsquos masterful playing Sorinrsquos chops are firmly based in a foundation of Little Walter and like Charlie Musselwhite Sorin will transition from a muscular bass riff to a sinewy shower of single notes and jazzy flourishes For any fan of Chicago blues harmonica this disc is a spectacular discovery

Cant Be Satisfied The Life amp Times of Muddy Waters by Robert Gordon Phillip Davis is a fan of the Blues and rdquoplays a bit of guitar but is an amateur rdquo He jo ined the Sacramento Blues Society many years ago about the time he saw Muddy at the Blues Festival in Land Park rdquomaybe 80 or 81 a couple years before he diedrdquo After reading this book he was inspired to write a review to encourage others to read it also

This book has been out a long time Im not sure why I never read it before Its terrific It starts with Muddys life as a sharecropper on Stovalls Plantation on the Mississippi Delta a life not much better than a slaves Robert Johnson amp Son House are his inspiration and in the person of Son House his teacher Muddyrsquos move to Chicago is one of the greatest things that ever happened to the blues There are many great artists but Muddy was the 1st to play an electric guitar (not an acoustic with an added pickup) He literally converted the Delta blues to electrified Chicago blues creating an entirely new genre Because of this he is in my humble opinion the greatest bluesman ever For good listening after reading the book try Muddyrsquos The Plantation Recordings 1942 when Alan Lomax travelled to Stovalls for the 1st recordings And my favorites are Hard Again Im Re ady and The W oods tock A lb um

Book Review - by Phillip Davis

On Tuesday July 3rd I had the immense pleas-ure of hearing James Hunter at Harlowrsquos Thank you to SWELL Productions for con-stantly reminding us of the wealth of talent in the

world of blues This band brought to mind the early British invasion and reminded me of the resurgence or birth of modern blues in Amer-ica With two saxes key board stand-up bass teamed with a smooth smooth drummer the guitar just danced over the top Hips are sway-ing toes are tappinrsquo and baby sing to me Noth-ing fancy here just solid rhythm delightful lyrics

and good olersquo fashion feel-good blues When the band has smiles from here to there you know theyrsquore got a groove on Of course I could only understand every other word when James broke for a story (the Brit accent you know) And then I stopped into darsquoTorch where Howell

DeVine was picking on the back porch I only wished it was my back porch because I just was-nrsquot sure how much more I could take in one night Washboards stand up harp pricking crying blues This trio really took you to school Fabu-lous Over and over I say the same thinghellipwe are in-credibly blessed in this town with blues talent Every night all over the region someone is dipping into that river of soul blood and guts known as the blues Does that sound too preachy Maybe but true

Blues In The Schools is on summer break ndash wersquore busy what are you doing Irsquom sure the BITS students and musicians are using some of this down time to dig deeper into the blues Irsquove been keeping up with some of our younger players and where theyrsquore playing through the Sacramento BLUES IN THE SCHOOLS Facebook page (Find us make us your friend) Rosemont and West Campus high school students will be performing for the Old Highway 99 Festival on Saturday July 28 2012 Itrsquos a

real honor that they have been invited to play and we would like to thank Skip Murphy for promoting BITS

and signed by artists in re-cent SBS shows The pro-ceeds will go directly to the BITS program Tickets have been sold for the past few months and we are ready to pull the winning ticket Be sure to attend the Jimmie Thackery Show on August 10 2012 at the Blue Goose in Loomis to get your ticket Details are listed elsewhere in this issue of the Blue Notes

-Mindy Giles-

Ron Sorin and the Blue Coast Band

Lake City (Big Lake Records)

This one just keeps getting stronger with each listen Sorin is a born-in-Chicago harp player and longtime side-man but this is his first solo recording Since Sorin ap-parently doesnrsquot sing hersquos done us the favor of drafting vocalist extraordinaire Tad Robinson for seven cuts Robinson has become known more as a soul-man but here he showcases his splendid blues chops The band

is made up of solid veterans of the blues circuit Ken Say-dak keys Marty Binder drums Harlan Terson bass and Mark Wydra guitar John Brumbach contributes sax on two cuts Pete Benson plays organ on two You are treated to fifteen tracks with only three covers These three are inspired a Duke Ellington ldquoGood Gal Bluesrdquo rdquoIrsquove Got No Stringsrdquo an instrumental that seemed familiar but I have to admit I had to read it was from the Disney movie Pinocchio A harsh trill opens ldquoGimme Dat Harp Boyrdquo before melding into the raw driving riff and vocal of the Captain Beefheart tune The originals donrsquot stray from familiar frameworks of harmonica blues idiom but new twists on old riffs abound in Sorinrsquos masterful playing Sorinrsquos chops are firmly based in a foundation of Little Walter and like Charlie Musselwhite Sorin will transition from a muscular bass riff to a sinewy shower of single notes and jazzy flourishes For any fan of Chicago blues harmonica this disc is a spectacular discovery

This one just keeps getting stronger with each listen Sorin is a born-in-Chicago harp player and longtime side-man but this is his first solo recording Since Sorin ap-parently doesnrsquot sing hersquos done us the favor of drafting vocalist extraordinaire Tad Robinson for seven cuts Robinson has become known more as a soul-man but here he showcases his splendid blues chops The band

Catherines voice is a unique mixture of what almost seem contrasting qualities Its velvety and smoky yet clean clear---so confident with the music---and spot-on with intonation I like that Coming from a musical family Catherines mother Car-line Ray (a veteran jazz bassist and vocalist) brings it altogether for Catherine with her fathers musical experi-ences early in the 20th century in New Orleans Chicago and New York City Mr Russell and Armstrong were almost the same age born 1902 and 1901 respectively I was pleasantly surprised to hear how Catherine and the ensembles that back her on two CDs (ldquoInside This Heart of Minerdquo and ldquoStrictly Romancinrdquo) capture the es-sence of different kinds of great music that so many of

something very near to greats from back-in-the-day like Django Rheinhardt Joe Venuti and a little of the more modern sounding Art Van Damme And did I hear something akin to Nat Coles legendary trio Then theres blues and swing---which her father in a big-band kind of way was early into I noticed the jump dixieland and straight ahead as well as a little gospel she sings with her mother Banjo playing sprang from among the instrumentalists on other tracks that spread Russells music concept on these CDs wide and most Americanall performed over the plate and in the pocket Whoa She does nothing not solid and I think the lady could sing it all backwards and still cut it---and wed love it I must even fess-up and say that Catherine does a Duke EllingtonMack David song that Id not heard ldquoLong Strong and Consecutiverdquo It was just one of those things---I missed Well as Ive said for a long time now ldquoTheres no time like the presentrdquo even if the bloomings late When Russell gets to Sacramento I hope shell sing ldquoAll The Cats Join Inrdquo and Fats Wallers ldquoInside This Heart Of Minerdquo Ill be in the audience in rapt attention

CD Reviews

is made up of solid veterans of the blues circuit Ken Say-dak keys Marty Binder drums Harlan Terson bass and Mark Wydra guitar John Brumbach contributes sax on two cuts Pete Benson plays organ on two You are treated to fifteen tracks with only three covers These three are inspired a Duke Ellington ldquoGood Gal Bluesrdquo rdquoIrsquove Got No Stringsrdquo an instrumental that seemed familiar but I have to admit I had to read it was from the Disney movie Pinocchio A harsh trill opens ldquoGimme Dat Harp Boyrdquo before melding into the raw driving riff and vocal of the Captain Beefheart tune The originals donrsquot stray from familiar frameworks of harmonica blues idiom but new twists on old riffs abound in Sorinrsquos masterful playing Sorinrsquos chops are firmly based in a foundation of Little Walter and like Charlie Musselwhite Sorin will transition from a muscular bass riff to a sinewy shower of single notes and jazzy flourishes For any fan of Chicago blues harmonica this disc is a spectacular discovery
