PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2015/16 – MARK LYDEN

Well another full year has seemed to just fly by again and we are a few weeks into a new registraon

year. I would firstly like to thank all our members for once again staying loyal to the club and the

sport through the 2015/16 season. It is becoming an ever increasing compeon for clubs to a%ract

and retain members in a world that is full of more sports and acvies than you could poke a sck

at. Combine this with the increasing pressures of study, employment and me-sucking smartphones

it is amazing that anyone has me for sport. Overall, our parcipaon numbers are going okay but

certainly could do with a boost of some younger blood in the junior age groups. It is quite strange

that currently the open age group is our biggest growth category. Yes it’s the biggest age bracket

range but normally you would expect it to be more tapering at the tail end not ge/ng fa%er. And

it’s not just our club; TMA membership, is also recording record levels of growth in another good

reflecon that athlecs is a sport for life. Retenon of athletes across the 20’s range is also slightly

be%er than it has been in the past, which is another posive sign as this age group has been an area

in which all clubs have struggled with due to extra me pressures such as study and career building.

As a club we do need to find ways to a%ract and retain more junior athletes as they are the future of

the club and an essenal pathway to success at the club premiership level. A key part to moving

forwards would be finding ways to address the severe shortage (across the whole state) in qualified

coaches capable of meeng the needs of junior athletes. For example, being available in that post

school hours window, being able to cater for a range of abilies across a broader spectrum of events

and not having too larger squads that individual a%enon can sll be given.

Another key area is the a%racon of volunteers and officials to be able to effecvely deliver events,

at both club and branch level. So members have posive experiences and can use those experiences

to portray the club and sport in posive light to others. While the club’s commi%ee has become

much stronger in the last year with the addion of some much needed new hands we are sll

struggling to meet our targets and responsibilies we have as a club to our members and the local

and state bodies. While I recognise that not everyone has the me to be on the commi%ee or help

out at every event, I don’t think it’s unreasonable for all club members to occasionally put their club

and teammates before themselves and forgo individual achievement for the benefit of others.

Across the board there are too many “users” for a sport which solely is reliant on the goodwill of a

limited number of volunteers to provide the services that we all enjoy. It has been idenfied for

some me at local/state administraon level that the sport is not operang at a sustainable level in

terms of volunteers and that the only way around this without an increase in acve member

parcipaon in these roles is to financially incenvise the roles. This would mean higher

administraon costs and therefore higher parcipaon cost pushed back onto the user. So if you

want to keep the sport cost effecve into the future get out and lend a hand as the more hands we

have the less work and more fun we can all have.

This will be my last presidenal report for a while as I am stepping down from my posion a=er nine

years in the role. While it has been a lot of hard work I am proud to have had the opportunity to

lead the club over my me as president. I will freely admit that at many mes I have struggled with

aspects of the posion as administraon is not one of my best skills but, at all mes I was trying to

do my best to keep things moving forward and do thing in the best interest of the club and its

members. I do feel I have managed to achieve some good outcomes for the club during my me

which will hopefully serve our members well into the future.

I would personally like to thank all the members of the commi%ee who have served the club under

my leadership. It was great to work with you all and I certainly could not have done it without your

assistance. While I am leaving the role I am sll going to be around to assist the club as best I can.

Hopefully I can get the body back working properly again so I can be a more effecve club member

out on the track, pu/ng the blue and white back on top of the table where it belongs.

TREASURER’S REPORT 2015/16 – ELISE HUMPHREY

This last year has been full of changes for Sandy Bay - we’ve struggled with the loss and subsequent

purchase of new equipment a=er the the= of our trailer and had to write off a significant amount of

uniform stock – bodysuit anyone? We have secured a new uniform supplier in Bolt & Run Co, who

very kindly donated a significant amount of stock to us – thank you Jay! With this partnership, our

members get a discount when purchasing gear directly from B & R, using the code B&RVIP2016.

We’re also able to reduce the cost of SB singlets to $30, from $45. We’ll have new hoodies and tee’s

available to purchase soon too.

We’ve had a few BBQs, and a Quiz Night that have raised just over $1000 for us this year, which is a

fantasc effort. Thanks to David Davis-Jones for his generous donaon of aucon items and to the

Running Edge, Salamanca Fresh, Lululemon, Find Your Feet, Kingborough Sports Centre and Sportsco

for prizes. Our Term Deposits of $20,000 and $30,000, have earned $807 in interest.

Thank you to Mike Walker, who once again completed our audit this year; to Olivia Gillie who kindly

sold Entertainment books on our behalf last year, her contribuon of $143 was gratefully received;

and to Bolt & Run Co who kindly donated a significant amount of stock to us (don’t forget club

members get a discount on all gear using the code ‘B&RVIP2016’ when ordering). We’re always keen

to have people help out with fundraising, it’s how we can help support our members with things like

travel assistance. If you have any idea’s, or would like to help out but don’t want to be on the

commi%ee, let us know!

SBHC Out of Stadium Report

The 2015 winter season saw the club well represented on most weeks resulting in 3rd place finishes

in both the Men’s and Women’s club premierships. It was pleasing to see some new faces and an

increase in numbers as well as some impressive individual performances throughout the course of

the season. Life Member Daniel Smee refuses to slow down with age and produced many

outstanding races to not only win several events but also be crowned as the Athletics South Male

Athlete of the Season. Daniel Clarke finished in equal 2nd place for this award with Ruby Smee

running strongly throughout the year to also finish in equal 2nd place in the Female Athlete of the

season award.

There were some notable performances in the Road Championship and Cross Country Championship

Series events held within the Athletics South calendar. In the Open category Daniel Clarke won the

Road Series with Alex Humphrey 3rd, with Clarke also managing 3rd in the Cross Country Series. In the

U/20 age group Bini Hagos finished in 2nd place in the Men’s and Jemma Smith 2nd in the Women’s in

the Cross Country Series. Promising juniors Lachie Chambers and Ruby Smee achieved strong results

in the U/15 Series’ with Chambers taking 1st place in both the Road and Cross Country male events

and Ruby finishing 2nd in both categories for females. Francesca Smith and Dean Giblin each ran well

throughout both Series’ to claim 1st place in each in the O/40 Women’s and O/50 Men’s categories

respectively. In addition to his Athlete of The Season award, Daniel Smee also claimed 1st place in

the O/40 Cross Country and Road Series events. In the Handicap race series Michael Sullivan was

able to race above himself to take overall honours including taking 1st place across the line in the

8km Froggy Wise Memorial Race.

Sandy Bay teams performed well at the Tasmanian Championship event with the Men’s Open team

claiming the gold medal in the team’s event. Individuals to claim medals included Ruby Smee (2nd

U/16 Female), Lachie Chambers (3rd U/16 Male), Dejen Gebreselassie (3rd Open Male), Elaine

Marquardt (1st O/60), and Chris Gates (2nd O/60).

On the Fun Run circuit, Sandy Bay athletes excelled with the highlights being Biniyam Hagos’ win in

the City to Casino 7km event and a double in the Ross Half Marathon, with Daniel Clarke and

Francesca Smith victorious. A special mention to Jarrod Shaw for completing his second Comrades

Ultra-marathon in a time of 8 hours, 11 minutes and 34 seconds. Official OOS competition over the

summer saw the Tasmanian Marathon and Half Marathon Championships held in conjunction with

the Cadbury Marathon. Several Sandy Bay members took part with the standout performance being

Alex Humphrey’s 2nd place finish in the marathon event.

The camaraderie and atmosphere at the winter season events was fantastic and we thank our

competitors and members for helping to make the season what it is and look forward to bigger and

better things.

2015/16 Bill Dunn & Laura Triffett 400m Handicaps Report

The annual Bill Dunn and Laura Triffett 400m handicap events were held on 19 December as part of

Athletics South’s Reunion Day. The unenviable task of handicapping the field fell to Daniel Clarke

who set about tackling the role with all the strategic guile of a grand chess master. His first task was

to ensure that he didn’t win the Bill Dunn Memorial race himself and thus avoid an almost certain

post-race lynching. This was achieved by giving himself a mark 16 seconds behind the front marker

Craig Downie.

With last year’s winner Russell Taib out with injury, Ryan Foster was given the dubious honour of

starting at the rear of the field from a mark of 24 seconds. Half way down the back straight and the

field had bunched together, with the exception of the front marker who had a 50m break on the

chasing pack. Foster was looking ominous, making ground with every stride and Lachlan Chambers

also looked to be in with a show. However, it was veteran distance runner Daniel Smee who

emerged from the pack and set off in pursuit of his even older rival. Drawing inspiration from his

win in the event 25 years earlier, Smee shook off the shackles of age to draw within 15m of the lead

at the top of the home straight. Not to be outdone, Downie found an extra gear, only to be passed

in the final metre of the race by Smee, with Chambers grabbing third ahead of a rampaging Foster.

The women’s race was well supported, with nearly all of our small tribe of registered athletes

fronting the starter’s gun. Club stalwart Jessica Palermo was sent out as the rabbit for the

greyhounds to chase, followed by the ever-green Francesca Smith (11 seconds), who was backing up

from a slashing 4.57 performance earlier in the day in the Max Cherry 1500m. Golden girl, Abigail

Rothery, fresh from her win in the Jo Millar-Cubit Long Jump event was the backmarker off 20

seconds, one second behind Agnes Sakina. At the half way mark, it looked to be a race in two, with

Madison Chambers looking the goods having edged past Lucy Taranto. Last year’s winner, Ruby

Smee, dug deep up the straight to edge past Taranto on the line but there was no heading

Chambers, who went on to win by two seconds.

SBHC Track and Field Report 2015/16

After a strong finish to the 2014/15 season, it was hoped that the club could sustain this momentum

into 2015/16 with increased participation in both the men’s and women’s interclub competition.

Unfortunately, a combination of injuries and a loss of athletes to other clubs and sports meant that

our numbers competing each week were down and we were never a chance of matching it with the

two bigger clubs in the interclub premiership. Nonetheless, we were well represented each week

and welcomed a number of new members to the club.

It was particularly pleasing to see the improvement in our junior athletes - including Sorin Vanzino,

Noah Patterson-Robert, James Tucker, James Taranto, Lachie Chambers, Jemma Smith, Alycia

Hardwick and Ruby Smee in the distance events; Lucy Taranto, Agnes Sakina, Oliver Creek, Tahlia

Bortignon, Simon Zinzovski and Oliver Burrows-Cheng in the sprints; Jagga Pybus in the jumps, Indy

Brideson in the throws and all round athletes Ethan Clements, Patrick Kearney and Madison

Chambers. Russell Taib represented Australia at the Youth Commonwealth Games in Malaysia in

September but was unfortunately unable to reach peak form during the season due to a hamstring

injury. A number of our athletes represented the State at the National All Schools Championships in

Melbourne in December and again in the National Underage Championships in Perth in March, in

which Ruby Smee was able to claim a bronze medal in the U/17 3,000m. Ruby set a number of club

records during the season and was victorious in the Max Cherry Memorial 1500m, which is a very

special event for our club.

In the senior ranks, Abbie Rothery led the way for our women, performing at a high level all season

in a multitude of events. She took out the Jo Millar Cubit long jump event at the Reunion Day, was

our best performer in the State Open Championships in Launceston and went on to represent the

State at in the Heptathlon at the National Championships in Brisbane in March. Francesca Smith had

another outstanding season, setting new State records in the Masters W45 mile and 10,000m.

Jessica Palermo was a consistent and dedicated performer, whilst we were buoyed by the addition

of Amy Pedder and Casey Jones to our women’s team.

Page 10: SBHC Annual Report 2016sbhc.org.au/.../2016/05/SBHC-Annual-Report-81-2016.pdf · 2016-05-10 · Hopefully I can get the body back working properly again so I can be a more effec˘ve

For the senior men, Jared Gilroy, Vandy Kanneh, Nicholas Graver and Cameron Cranfield performed

at a consistently high level in the sprint events and regularly put their hands up for relays. Jared was

rewarded for his hard work over the season with a State 400m title and a bronze medal in the 200m.

Marc Gates showed solid improvement in the distance events, collecting silver medals in the State

Open 1500m and Steeplechase events and showing his versatility with a third silver in the high jump.

The Lyden and Sullivan brothers were sighted irregularly throughout the season due to work

commitments and injury but scored loads of points for the club on the days they did compete. Nick

Campbell, Dejen Gebreselassie, Alex Humphrey and Daniel Clarke were regular contributors on and

off the field, whilst our Masters aged athletes in Paul Tucker, Chris Gates, Dean Giblin, Frank Strk,

Daniel Smee, Len Powell, Paul Taranto all chipped in throughout the season. We were delighted to

welcome back Ryan Foster to the club after seven years in the United States, during which time he

set multiple Tasmanian records. Ryan returns with his wife Karaleigh, who is also an extremely

accomplished distance runner.

Club Decathlon

The second Athlecs South Club Decathlon was held on the evening of 16 December 2015,

with the club represented by the following team:

We needed every single one of our registered women who were available on the night to

form a team and were delighted when it was announced that they had taken out third

place, with the men fourth. Many thanks to all athletes who competed, with parcular

menon to those parcipang in events outside of their comfort zone (Daniel Clarke, Lucy

Taranto and Madison Chambers).

Page 11: SBHC Annual Report 2016sbhc.org.au/.../2016/05/SBHC-Annual-Report-81-2016.pdf · 2016-05-10 · Hopefully I can get the body back working properly again so I can be a more effec˘ve

Coaching

Coaches are the life-blood of our sport and we are extremely fortunate that our athletes are

supported by some fantasc coaches including: David Davis-Jones, Peter Lyden, Rex Morris,

Dean Giblin, Sco% Goldsmith, Simon Benne%, Damien Lawler, Susan Andrews, Wayne

Mason, Evan Peacock, Mike Pace and Jy Webb. Coaching and support was provided to the

Queenborough Li%le Athlecs Centre during the season in an endeavour to make our club

known to athletes making the transion to senior ranks. Thanks to David Davis-Jones,

Daniel Clarke and Mark Lyden for their efforts in relaon to this iniave.

OfficiaBng

During the track and field season, Sandy Bay is required to provide sufficient officials to

ensure that compeon can be conducted in all of the jumps events. This includes events

that are conducted by Athlecs South on behalf of Athlecs Tasmania (eg State

Championships). We only had a handful of helpers last season but are grateful for the

reless work of Lynne Lyden and Rex Morris on the long jump pit and Anna Smee and

Jessica Palermo at the high jump. Others to lend a hand during the season were Nick

Campbell, Elise Humphrey, Ruby Smee, Paul Taranto, Phil Clements and Daniel Clarke. Your

assistance was most appreciated.
