CRAFT IDEASjiJBeautiful Batik
Batik is a Javanese word fora method of applying designsto fabric. It requires the useof wax and fabric dye, fabric,a brush and a little time. Theresults of batik design onfabric are lovely and oftenunusual. A finished batik hasmany uses. Wear it as a scarf, make it into a pillow, anapron, a blouse, or frame it.
When making a batik, melt-ed wax is painted onto fabric. When the wax hardens, thefabric is dipped into a dyesolution. The waxed areas re-sist the dye so that dye is ab-sorbed only on the unwaxedportions. Waxing and dyeingis repeated several times toobtain the final, colorful de-sign. The crackled, cobwebeffect so characteristic of batikis formed when dye seepsthrough cracks in the wax.
Wax is removed on a finishedbatik by ironing fabric placedbetween layers of absorbentpaper.
The first step in batik is toplan the design and colors tobe used. Choose colors thatwill blend well. Dyes aretransparent and one colordyed over another will createa third: Scarlet over yellowgives dark orange, fuchsia ov-er royal blue makes green. If
you are not sure how i. par-ticular color combination willwork, experiment first on a
small piece of fabric.Select white or lightly color-
ed fabric with a close, tightweave that is washable anddyeable. Wash, dry and ironsmooth. Place fabric over alayer of foil or waxed paper, stretch taut and secure withpush pins or thumb tacks to
a board. Melt paraffin in adouble boiler, never over adirect flame as paraffin isflammable. With an inexpen-sive bristle brush, paint waxover areas that are to remainthe original fabric color.
Prepare the first dye solu-tion while wax is hardening, starting with the lightest col-or. In a rectangular pan withdeep sides, mix 1 j cup liquidor dissolve 1 package powderall purpose Rit dye in 1 quart
warm tap water. Add waxedfabric to dye and stir gentlyfor about 5 to 10 minutes orlonger for deeper colors. Re-move fabric, rinse in cool wat-
er and hang to dry. Then painton more wax to protect areas
that are to remain the pre-vious dyed color. Continuedyeing and waxing steps untilall colors are added Rinse, dry and remove wax.
