AttractionsDiscover Mainz in all its facets – dive into a world of art, culture and history as you learn more about Mainz, a city that goes back two millennia.
Dom St. Martin – St. Martin’s Cathedral
You’ll find St. Martin’s Cathedral right next to the market square (Markt). Features of the cathedral include tombs of archbishops as well as the Romanesque St. Gotthard’s Chapel and the late Gothic cloister. The Cathedral Museum is now located in the chapterhouse buildings and cloister, and exhibits works of art from two millennia of Mainz history.
Mainz Altstadt – The Old Town
Leafy spaces, lovingly restored half-timbered houses, and magnificent Baroque churches give the historic centre of Mainz a charmingly cosy atmosphere. You’ll find elegant boutiques, cafés and wine bars tucked away behind rococo fronts and in baroque town houses, and winding streets full of life – there’s always something going on here.
St. Stephan’s Church – Chagall windows
The church of St. Stephan is a veritable attraction with visitors from around the world on pilgrimage to Stephansberg hill and up to the luminous blue stained glass windows. Jewish artist Marc Chagall (1887 – 1985) created these unique works of art as a symbol of Jewish-Christian friendship in 1985.
Gutenbergplatz – Gutenberg Square
Named after one of the city’s most famous sons, this square is located in the Old Town, very close to the Cathedral, and closely guarded by a monument to Johannes Gutenberg proudly looking onto Mainz Staatstheater, or State Theatre, across the street, where you’ll find an attractive cultural programme for young and old on a variety of stages.
4 AT A GLANCE | ATTRACTIONS
Zitadelle – The Citadel
The Mainz Citadel is located on Jakobsberg hill on the edge of the Old Town close to Römisches Theater (Roman Theatre) railway station. These fortifications reached their present form in 1660 as part of the Mainz fortress. The Citadel also has Roman heritage, with the Stone of Drusus set in honour of the Roman General Nero Claudius Drusus.
Rheinufer – The Banks of the Rhine
Any Mainz visit should include a walk along the beautiful Rhine Promenade. The joie de vivre on the Rhine that is so typical of Mainz is particularly abundant here. A glass of wine in your left hand, the Rhine to your right – what more could you need? Special tip: the Mainzer Sommerlichter (Summer Lights) fireworks and music festival is held here on the last weekend in July – a unique experience!
