Site visit highlights

In all the schools students of primary school can read and write English. The understanding of the subjects is thoroughStudents were aware about the day-to-day happenings and general knowledge was found to be sound. All the students were wearing the government distributed school uniform. The records for distribution of free medicines (Liv 52) to students and distribution of notebooks were maintained properly. The library book issue details were also properly documented.

Site visit highlights

The volunteers regularly take classes in the science center and demonstrate the concepts of refraction (using prisms), lenses, lasers, centre of gravity etc. which are not part of the curriculum but students of the school have a clear understanding about them.

All the schools regularly schedule demonstrations using CD/DVD for every class.

Water filters donated by Banks, other organisation are installed in all the schools for providing clean drinking water.

In the primary school Khark Karki, many guardians told that because of the quality of education in HIMWATS adopted schools they have admitted their kids to these schools from private schools.

The absenteeism in school is handled by the volunteer quite nicely as they go to the homes of the children not present in the school and request parents to send their children to the school daily. On an average, the attendance of students is around 80-85%.

17

Challenges seen

Volunteers who leave are not replaced easily and school activities suffer.

The enrolment in some of the schools is declining every year and the faculties have attributed this to

less kids in the villages

parents prefer sending their kids to private schools as they are perceived to be providing better education as compared to government schools.

Recommendations from site visit

The salary paid to the volunteers is quite low (maximum – Rs 5000) as compared to the amount paid to government teachers (Minimum Rs 25000). The volunteers are doing good work for the students hence they must be paid more in order to retain them for a longer period of time. The science center has a huge repository of equipment which can be used better if a more qualified person is recruited for demonstrating the experiments to the students on a daily basis.

19

Recommendations from site visit cont..

It was observed that in some schools there were few or no volunteers (one volunteer had resigned and one was on maternity leave), so with the understanding amongst the volunteers and under the guidance of knowledge club members, volunteers can rotate on a weekly or monthly basis so that the work of the organization is not stopped.

In the meeting a new idea came up, the idea was to set up an assessment level of every subject in every class and the volunteers will ensure that all the students must be able to clear the assessment level. The state government has provided the schools with a chart for every class which states the level of understanding a student must have in a subject with time. Students will be promoted to the next class as per the mandate by the government.
