Patience IS a Virtue in Today’s World!
Date: August 07, 2019 2:00 PM - 3:30 PM EASTERN Location: Online
In this 24/7 world, there are many things that might be testing our patience (running late,
boredom, doing too many things, health issues, relationship irritants, and any number of life’s
other stressors). It shouldn’t really surprise us that it’s a rare person who moves through each day
in a warm, fuzzy blanket of patience.
In this webinar, we’ll discuss developing an awareness of our own impatience along with
tips on how to increase our level of patience – and our happiness. After all, do you know many
people who are constantly impatient, but happy? We didn’t think so!

Be a Manager AND a Leader: Assertiveness for the Unassertive
Date: August 14, 2019 2:00 PM - 3:00 PM EASTERN Location: Online
Assertiveness – grrrrr! Oh wait, that’s being aggressive! In this webinar, we’ll
discuss the differences between being assertive and aggressive, as well as the dangers of
being passive. As a Manager AND a Leader, we need to be assertive, but there can
definitely be a fine line between that and aggressiveness. And it won’t serve us well to
cross that line – just like it won’t serve us well to be passive in dealing with our staff.
What’s EI Got to Do with It? How EI Makes You Smarter about Cultural Differences
and
When Conversations Get Awkward: Inclusive Dialogues Across Our Differences
Date: August 15, 2019 9:00 AM - 12:00 PM EASTERN Location: SWFLN Office
and 13120 Westlinks Terrace, Unit 3
1:00 PM - 4:00 PM EASTERN Fort Myers, FL 33913
In the morning workshop, you will learn about Emotional Intelligence, or “EI”. As librarians, Emotional
Intelligence plays a huge role in our ability to navigate communication and relationships across multiple “cultures”
– including not only race/ethnicity/nationality but also gender, age, differences of ability, education, and socio-
economic background. This workshop will explore the intersection of EI and what we might call “CI” or “Cultural
Intelligence” – examining the two concepts and the knowledge and skills they require. You’ll learn how you can
better leverage EI in managing the multicultural challenges of the library environment.
In the afternoon workshop, we’ll look at how to prepare for (and respond in the
moment to) roadblocks to finding common ground when experiences and perspectives
are very different. We’ll consider how the library might serve as a venue for structured
conversations about difficult societal issues using the principles of inclusive dialogue.
You’ll leave with more confidence to open up the dialogue with someone who is
different and, possibly, make your library a place for positive conversations.
Setting Up a Virtual Reality Lab
Date: August 16, 2019 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM EASTERN Location: Online
Virtual and Augmented Reality (VR/AR) has been around for just a few years, and the public is aware of
fun games and devices; but how to host the equipment and processes in the library setting is NEW. What can this
new technology do to help our patrons thrive creatively and academically? What do you need to know to setup a
VR/AR Lab for your library?
The thought of starting a virtual reality lab can be daunting. You’ve probably read
about Virtual Reality and have seen examples of its potential to be a fantastic learning
resource for your school, organization, or community; but NOW, you want to create
your own . . . so where do you start? We will focus on a basic understanding of VR/AR,
how to manage the project, and how to ensure accountability. I will also share my
experiences setting up a VR/AR lab in my library, as well as inform you of SWFLN’s
VR/AR components of the Bits ‘N Bytes to Borrow Program.

Date: August 28, 2019 9:00 AM - 4:00 PM EASTERN Location: SWFLN Office
13120 Westlinks Terrace, Unit 3
Fort Myers, FL 33913
We can hardly read a magazine or an online article without seeing something on the differences in
generations. Of course, those differences have been around for generations – pun intended! And although we
certainly recognize the truth of that, we may just wish we could avoid the whole topic, especially regarding our
workplace.
Except . . . what if we had a place where we could openly discuss the differences and why they matter?
What if we stopped to acknowledge weaknesses, but also celebrate and build on the strengths of each group?
What if . . . we opened the lines of communication?? It’s not always easy, but I promise it will be enlightening!
