The everglades

BladderwortBladderworts are a plant that lives in the water of the Everglades. They have little gas filled balloon like things on their stems. Very small animals get caught in the balloon things which are called bladders. They eat water fleas, mosquito larvae, and even young tadpoles.

Paurotis PalmThe Paurotis Palm is often called “Everglades Palm” because a lot of these plants grow close together in Florida.

Gray FoxThe Gray Fox is a medium-sized omnivore.[that means it eats plants and animals.]The Gray Fox eats reptiles and birds. It has brownish, reddish fur.

Roseate SpoonbillSpoonbills get their pink color from their food. Spoonbills use their specialized bills to eat.They eat algae.

There are six kinds of spoonbills in the world.

Importance of the evergladesThe Everglades are home to many species of plants and animals. The Everglades are important for the preservation of wildlife.

Past of the evergladesIn the past, there were more plants and animals than today. Did you know there was a lot of damage done when there was a plane crash in the Everglades?

This is a memorial to all the people that died in the plane crash.

Space of the evergladesIn the Everglades today there are 11,000 square miles.The river is 60 miles long. In the 1900s there was more land for the Everglades, but now people have built houses.

Help to the evergladesThere are many people and groups trying to protect the Everglades.There are also many different kinds of scientists trying to make sure the Everglades are a safe place for many plants and animals to live.

Interesting facts1.A flight named ValuJet Flight 592 left the Miami International Airport on it’s way to Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, it left on May 11th, 1996.The plane crashed in the Everglades about 11 minutes after it left Miami.

4.It is the only place where both crocadiles and alligators live.
