WHAT IS POLLUTION????Pollution is the introduction of contaminants

into the natural environment that cause adverse change. Pollution can take the form of chemical substances or energy, such as noise, heat or light. Pollutants, the components of pollution, can be either foreign substances/energies or naturally occurring contaminants.

TYPES OF POLLUTION

Page 5: SAVE ENVIRONMENT AND REDUCE POLLUTION

AIR POLLUTIONAir pollution is the contamination of air by smoke and

harmful gases, mainly oxides of carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen. Some examples of air pollution include:

Exhuast fumes from vehicles The burning of fossil fuels, such as coal, oil, or gas Harmful off-gasing from things such as paint, plastic

production, and so on Radiation spills or nuclear accidents Air pollution is linked to asthma, allergies and other

respiratory illnesses.

HOW TO REDUCE AIR POLLUTION??? Avoid waiting in long drive-thru lines, for example, at fast-food

restaurants or banks. Park your car and go in. When possible, use public transportation, walk, or ride a bike. Get regular engine tune ups and car maintenance checks (especially

for the spark plugs). Use an energy-conserving (EC) grade motor oil. Ask your employer to consider flexible work schedules or

telecommuting. Report smoking vehicles to your local air agency. Join a carpool or vanpool to get to work. Recycle paper, plastic, glass bottles, cardboard, and aluminum cans.

(This conserves energy and reduces production emissions.) Keep woodstoves and fireplaces well maintained. You should also

consider replacing old wood stoves with EPA-certified models. Plant deciduous trees in locations around your home to provide shade

in the summer, but to allow light in the winter. Buy green electricity-produced by low-or even zero-pollution facilities. Connect your outdoor lights to a timer or use solar lighting. Wash clothes with warm or cold water instead of hot

LAND POLLUTION Land pollution is the degradation of the Earth's surface caused by a

misuse of resources and improper disposal of waste. Some examples of land pollution include:

Litter found on the side of the road Illegal dumping in natural habitats Oil spills that happen inland The use of pesticides and other farming chemicals Damage and debris caused from unsustainable mining and logging

practices Radiation spills or nuclear accidents Land pollution is responsible for damage done to natural habitat of

animals, deforestation and damage done to natural resources, and the general ugly-ing up of our communities.

Page 8: SAVE ENVIRONMENT AND REDUCE POLLUTION

HOW TO REDUCE LAND POLLUTION??? Buy biodegradable products. Store all liquid chemicals and waste in spill-

proof containers. Eat organic foods that are grown without

pesticides. ... Don't use pesticides if you can. Use a drip tray to collect engine oil. Buy products that have little packaging

LIGHT POLLUTION Light pollution is the brightening of the night sky inhibiting

the visibility of stars and planets by the use of improper lighting of communities. Some examples of what causes light pollution:

Street lamps that shine light in all directions, instead of with a hood to point light downward toward the street.

Extra, unnecessary lights around the home Cities that run lights all night long Light pollution uses more energy by shining more light up

instead of down, meaning you need brighter bulbs for the same amount of light.

HOW TO REDUCE LIGHT POLLUTION??? Avoid waiting in long drive-thru lines, for

example, at fast-food restaurants or banks. Park your car and go in.

When possible, use public transportation, walk, or ride a bike.

Get regular engine tune ups and car maintenance checks (especially for the spark plugs).

Use an energy-conserving (EC) grade motor oil.

Ask your employer to consider flexible work schedules or telecommuting.

Report smoking vehicles to your local air agency.

Join a carpool or vanpool to get to work.

NOISE POLLUTION Noise pollution is any loud sounds that are either

harmful or annoying to humans and animals. Some exmaples of noise pollution:

Airplanes, helicopters, and motor vehicles Construction or demolition noise Human activities such as sporting events or concerts Noise pollution can be disruptive to humans' stress

levels, may be harmful to unborn babies, and drives animals away by causing nervousness and decreasing their ability to hear prey or predators.

Page 12: SAVE ENVIRONMENT AND REDUCE POLLUTION

HOW TO REDUCE NOISE POLLUTION??? Turn off your electronics- Turn them off when you are not using

them. A little extra effort is worth it; as a bonus, you’ll save some money on electricity.

Sound proof your space-  Installing better windows, sealing window frames, or hanging curtains (even thin ones) will help reduce the sound coming from outside.

Mask or cancel noise- You can do this by hanging wind chimes, turning on a fan, or running a small water feature. It may seem paradoxical because you’re creating more noise, however these things help mask the more unpleasant sounds that may otherwise bother you.

Use earplugs whenever possible as it protects our eardrums with excess noise.

THERMAL POLLUTION Thermal pollution is the increase of temperature caused by

human activity. A few examples of this include: Warmer lake water from nearby manufacturing (using cool

water to cool the plant and then pump it back into the lake) Included in thermal pollution should also be the increase in

temperatures in areas with lots of concrete or vehicles, generally in cities

These kinds of environmental pollution can cause aquatic life to suffer or die due to the increased temperature, can cause discomfort to communities dealing with higher temperatures, and will affect plant-life in and around the area.

Page 14: SAVE ENVIRONMENT AND REDUCE POLLUTION

HOW TO REDUCE THERMAL POLLUTION???There are many things people can do to help reduce thermal

pollution. One solution is that you keep a cycle going where water is cooled down then replaced with the warmer temperature. This will have no negative effect on the environment. Another way to prevent thermal pollution is to make laws that factories must dump their waste and water away from bodies of water. Another thing that can be done to prevent thermal pollution is to raise awareness to the people so they can talk to companies and allow the public to know and get more involved.

VISUAL POLLUTION Visual pollution is what you would call anything unattractive or

visualing damaging to the nearby landscape. This tends to be a highly subjective topic. Some examples of visual pollution:

Skyscrapers that blocks a natural view Graffiti or carving on trees, rocks, or other natural landscapes Billboards, litter, abandoned homes, and junkyards could also

be considered among three kinds of environmental pollution Mostly, visual kinds of environmental pollution are annoying and

ugly, although some may say they are also depressing, and they of course affect the surrounding landscape with the changes they cause.

When a man throws an empty cigarette package from an automobile, he is liable to a fine of $50. When a man throws a billboard across a view, he is richly rewarded. - Pat Brown

WATER POLLUTION Water pollution is the contamination of any body of water

(lakes, groundwater, oceans, etc). Some examples of water pollution:

Raw sewage running into lake or streams Industrial waste spills contaminating groundwater Radiation spills or nuclear accidents Illegal dumping of substances or items within bodies of

water Biological contamination, such as bacteria growth Farm runoff into nearby bodies of water These kinds of environmental pollution are linked to

health issues in humans, animals and plant-life.

HOW TO REDUCE WATER POLLUTION??? DO NOT pour fat from cooking or any other type of fat, oil,

or grease down the sink. Keep a “fat jar” under the sink to collect the fat and discard in the solid waste when full.

DO NOT dispose of household chemicals or cleaning agents down the sink or toilet. Simsbury has a Hazardous Waste Collection day usually from 8:00am to 1:00pm at Henry James School. Connecticut Resource Recovery Authority lists all collection dates.

DO NOT flush pills, liquid or powder medications or drugs down the toilet. For recommendations on proper disposal for all types of medical wastes, visit the CT DEP publication here.

Avoid using the toilet as a wastebasket. Most tissues, wrappers, dust cloths, and other paper goods should be properly discarded in a wastebasket. The fiber reinforced cleaning products that have become popular should never be discarded in the toilet.

Page 18: SAVE ENVIRONMENT AND REDUCE POLLUTION

•Avoid using a garbage disposal. Keep solid wastes solid. Make a compost pile from vegetable scraps.•Install a water efficient toilet. In the meantime, put a brick or 1/2 gal container in the standard toilet tank to reduce water use per flush.•Run the dishwasher or clothes washer only when you have a full load. This conserves electricity and water.•Use the minimum amount of detergent and/or bleach when you are washing clothes or dishes. Use only phosphate free soaps and detergents.•Minimize the use of pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers. DO NOT dispose of these chemicals, motor oil, or other automotive fluids into the sanitary sewer or storm sewer systems. Both of them end at the river.

CONCLUSION Driving is one of the biggest sources of air pollution, and

even small reductions in time spent behind the wheel can make a large difference. To help reduce the number of cars on the road, drive only when it's truly necessary, not just when it's convenient. Consider walking, biking or taking public transportation as an alternative to driving. If driving is absolutely necessary, try to carpool. Working from home and shopping online are other practices that can reduce driving.

Using environmentally friendly products is another strategy to prevent pollution. Use water-based paints, and reduce the toxins paint releases by trying to paint only when it’s below 90 degrees outside. Instead of a gas-powered lawnmower, use an electric or push mower. Try to avoid using chemical-based lawn care products. When shopping for cleaning products, look for items that are eco-friendly.

Recycling is another easy strategy to prevent pollution. Recycle as much as possible at home by reusing paper bags and printing on both sides of a piece of paper. Buy recycled products and products with recyclable packaging. Leaving grass clippings on the lawn is a natural form of recycling that provides nutrients to soil.
