SAUK COUNTY 4-H CALENDAR SALES

The Sauk County 4-H Calendars were dispersed at the Club Leader meeting on March 29. The Sauk County 4-H Calendars are a fundraiser for your 4-H club (Your 4-H Club receives $100 if you sell your 4-H Calendar allotment) as well one of the main fundraising efforts of the Sauk County 4-H Senior Leaders Association that supports the 4-H program in Sauk County. Without the money to carry out our programs and vision, 4-H will not be able to succeed. Fundraising matter – if we are raising money for an organization that does good work, then we are doing good work as well. Sauk County 4-H uses the money raised from calendar sales for: 4-H newsletter and correspondence; insurance for 4-H members and leaders at 4-H meetings and events; Member recognition and awards; leader training; member taining; Clover Awards; Camp; County Fair Activities and Awards; and much more. Your goal is to let your sale prospects know what 4-H means to you, and share your 4-H story. Build your prospect list: family members, friends, neighbors, anyone you spend money with – dentist, doctors, service providers, feed mill, etc. Schedule a time that you and they can meet. Then use basic sales techniques for better fundraising:

Perfect your introduction. Don’t start with a question like, “Would you like to buy…” Instead – Introduce yourself, your group, goal, what are you raising money for?

The money you raise will help support the county 4-H program as well as your 4-H club.

Share a personal story about what you have learned in 4-H, a project that you like to work on, a community service activity you have done, or a countywide event that you like to attend.

Youth who communicate the purpose of 4-H make our best ambassadors

Look nice and wear a 4-H t-shirt. If you are going to a business, make an appointment ahead of time, so they know you are coming, and so that you can speak to the correct person.

Say Thank You for helping us meet our goal, and restate what your goal is.

Please remember to complete the FULL address on the calendar stubs that are turned into your club leader. If that calendar stub is drawn as a winning stub, we need the address to mail the winning checks!

Please remember all checks you receive from sales should be made payable to YOUR 4-H club. ONE check should come from your 4-H club to pay for all of the calendar sales turned in by 4:30PM on Tuesday, July 19th.

UPHAM WOODS IS CELEBRATING 75 YEARS

75 years of Youth Development at Upham Woods will be commemorated the weekend of September 17-18, 2016 and we are seeking 4-H youth to be an integral part of that event. This is an excellent opportunity for youth to earn volunteer hours, gain leadership skill development, and to participate in an Upham Woods event outside of the summer camp experience. We need your help to find youth representatives for:

Planning of the 75th Anniversary event o Be part of the leadership team to

coordinate the 75th anniversary

Sunday 9/18/16 Anniversary Event Volunteers o Day of event set-up/clean-up o Be available to direct guests to various

areas around camp If you know of any 4-H youth that would be interested in participating please contact Max Myers, Upham Woods Program Director, at [email protected] Upham Woods would like to introduce a new interactive history series. Leading up to the 75th anniversary in September we will be posting historical information, contests having to do with Upham Woods, and links to a new section of our website. All information posted will follow the timeline of Upham Woods, starting with the Upham family and ending with the 75th anniversary. We will be linking all our sites together allowing for the audience to be one click away from answers to a trivia question. Take a trip back in time and listen to Afield with Ranger Mac or peruse the list of directors to see who was running the camp while you were here as a youth! Whether you are an adult who came here 40 years ago, or a youth thinking about coming for the first time, we will have something for everyone. Stay tuned for more information on the new history section of our website, check out our Facebook page for weekly updates, and get ready for the 75th anniversary that will be held at Upham Woods on September 18th, 2016.

COMMUNITY SERVICE CORNER

Community service is an important part of the 4-H program. Research tells us 4-H Youth are 3-4 times more likely to contribute to their communities compared to youth in other out-of-school programs (4-H Study of Positive Youth Development). Every month we will include Community Service ideas in the newsletter. This month we will focus on performance arts and sports. 1. Form a band with your friends and give free concerts. 2. If you play an instrument, help a friend learn to play. 3. Serve as an usher at a sporting event. 4. Get your marital arts or dance class to give a

demonstration at a youth center, nursing home or school.

5. Write and produce a play about a current issue.

MEAT RABBIT PROJECT MEETING There will be a Meat Rabbit meeting on Tuesday April 5 at 7pm in B-24 of West Square building. This will count as 1 point towards the meat animal sale educational points for the fair. Bring your young roaster rabbit and or breeding pair to show proof of ownership to be eligible to compete in the meat classes at the fair. We will discuss topics on breeding and raising commercial rabbits. Roaster rabbits are to be 6 months old or less on judging day of fair, fryer rabbits are not over 69 days old. If you breed your rabbits on April 5, the fryers should be 69 days old on judging day at the fair. Remember, rabbits are photoperiodic, when the length of daylight shortens, they are less likely to breed successfully. You can increase your chances by using artificial light. Fifteen hours of light each day should help a lot. Good Luck! Scott Mueller

RABBIT FUN SHOW The Rabbit Project will be hosting the Sauk County 4-H Rabbit Fun Show on Saturday, May 28 at the Sauk County Fairgrounds. Registration will begin at 8AM, Judging will begin at 9AM. There will be breed judging: all breeds are welcome including Cavies. There will also be fun classes for pet rabbits and costumes. Entry fee is $2.50 per rabbit or $2.00 for pre-registrations received by May 25th to Kim Klicko. Registration materials and more information can be found at: http://sauk.uwex.edu/4-h-events-and-contests/

2016 WISCONSIN STATE FAIR MARKET ANIMAL IDENTIFICATION

Youth interested in showing market beef, sheep or swine at the 2016 Wisconsin State Fair will need to get their animal projects DNA/RFID identified through the Wisconsin Livestock Identification Consortium (WLIC) by the respective State Fair eligibility deadlines. WLIC is coordinating a statewide DNA/RFID identification program for Wisconsin State Fair. This identification system allows animals which are DNA/RFID identified through the WLIC State Fair program to meet Wisconsin State Fair Identification requirements as long as the process is completed (all forms returned and samples on file) by the respective Wisconsin State Fair DNA/RFID identification deadlines (postmark): Sheep: Monday - May 9 Swine: Monday - May 9

How do I get my animals identified? Request DNA/RFID tag identification by going to the WLIC website at www.wiid.org to request your identification supplies. Print out, complete and mail the request form with payment to WLIC. Tags and paperwork are ONLY available through WLIC. The Wisconsin State Fair Office no longer processes DNA/RFID tag requests.
