Editorial Jai Shree Krishna everyone, and welcome to the 18th edition of the Satwara Voice. This edition is crammed with information of events which have happened recently and events which will be happening very soon, so be sure to make note of all the dates and times to make our events as successful as possible. On pages 3 and 7-10 we have Navratri related information, from meanings and songs, to your very own copy of the ārti; it might be an idea to detach this and bring it along to our Navratri celebrations so we can all sing along together :P Be sure to check out the article on the Paris trip very kindly written for us by our very own Kapil Katechia on page 4. After which we have a very topical health related article taken from the British Heart Foundation website on page 6 for all of us that love our mithai and oily foods. On pages 11 and 12 we have the regulars; the cookery corner and activity village. The recipes this time around are snacks regularly eaten during Navratri time, and the word search has a Disney twist to keep in theme with our Paris trip :D Also, for all those that missed out on this year’s Sports Day we have an article on page 5 filling you in on all the happenings. On page 13 we have details of the Diwali program which is on the 9th of November and is surely not to be missed. Just a final thank you to everyone that contributed to this edition and a shout out to all the budding journalists in the Satwara community, SEND IN YOUR ARTICLES A.S.A.P FOR THE NEXT EDITION!!! :D Happy reading, Chand Katechia

Vice-Chairperson’s Message Can you believe how quickly this year has gone; Autumn is already upon us. I hope you all have had a good summer break and are now prepared to make the most of the two biggest events that we have lined up for you. But the year is nowhere near over and with Norta and Diwali right around the corner, the Committee have been working vigorously hard to make these events ones to remember! Some people haven’t even realised but two Satwara events have already taken place this summer, with people really enjoying themselves and taking time out from their busy schedules, to spend time with their families and Satwara together. The 4 day trip to Paris will remain memorable to all those that attended. From a boat cruise, to a visit to Disneyland Paris, to some sightseeing, there was something for everyone. If you did not have the opportunity to come along this year, no worries, we always have next year and hopefully many more years to come. A healthy dose of competition never goes amiss! Sports Day was back this year with sports such as football, netball, badminton and basketball. With crowds cheering along on the sidelines, the atmosphere was both sizzling with enthusiasm and excitement. Although, the turn out was not as high as we anticipated, all the participants had a fantastic time. On behalf of the whole Committee, I would like to say a big thank you to everyone, for the support and help thus far and I hope your continued

support in the future will ensure our events exceed all expectations. I hope to see you all very soon. Dina Rathod

'Nav' means 'nine' and 'ratri' means 'night', thus, 'Navratri' means 'nine nights'. There are many legends attached to the conception of Navratri but all of them are related to Goddess Shakti (Hindu Mother Goddess) and her various forms. Though it is one of the most celebrated festivals of the Hindu calendar it holds a particularly special significance for Gujaratis and Bengalis. The first three days of Navratri are dedicated tGoddess Durga (Warrior Goddess) dressed in red and mounted on a lion, the next three days to Goddess Lakshmi (Goddess of Wealth and Prosperity) dressed in gold and mounted on an owl and finally, the last three days to Goddess Saraswati (Goddess Of Knowledge) dressed in milky white and mounted on a pure white swan. Dandiya and Garba Rass are the highlights of the festival i

Gujarat while farmers sow seeds and thank the Goddess for her blessings and pray for better yield. In olden times, this festival was associated with the fertility of MothEarth who feeds us as her children. Sweet dishes are prepared for the celebrati

everybody dresses up in new brightly-coloured clothes fthe night performances. In some communities people undergo rigorous fasts during this season which lasts for the nine days of Navratri and which is opened on the tenth day of Dussehra. However, nothing dampens the spirit of the devout followers of the Mother Goddess as they sing devotional songs and indulge in the gaieties of the season. This year Navratri is celebrated from the 29th of September, 2008.

Panoramic Paris

Namaste everyone, or should I say Bonjour! Our trip to France began with a long coach journey, especially for the Leicester Satwaras. When we arrived at Calais, the weather was not welcoming, however, the atmosphere on the coach was. Singing, shouting, jokes and banter. That night at the hotel we enjoyed a hot Indian dinner and got settled in. As you’d expect, throughout the hotel all you could hear were the Satwaras! The youth on the trip got quality bonding time by playing ‘mafia’ into the early hours.

The next day we had an early breakfast, with hot croissants and chai. We drove into central Paris where we saw a panoramic view of Paris. The weather was great which allowed us many photo stops. We saw Cleopatra’s Needle, L’arc de Triomphe, Avenue des

Champs-Élysées plus much more. At midday, we were given free time to see the sights of Paris.

The younger generation grabbed the opportunity and went to see the ‘Mona Lisa’ in the infamous Louvre museum. Others went shopping in the hustle and bustle of the busy Parisian streets. After lunch, we went to explore Château de Versailles. The tour of the Palace was excellent and the gardens were stunning. To thank our guide, one Satwara said ‘masi’ instead of ‘merci’ (no names mentioned!)! We got back to the hotel and freshened up for a cruise on the beautiful River Seine. The cruise was phenomenal. It had up-to-date personal gadgets which told you facts about Paris whilst viewing the sights. The ‘Paris at Night’ tour was amazing; the Eiffel Tower was dazzling with blue neon lights in a perfect night’s sky. In addition, at every hour, its lights

flickered on and off to create a glittering view and it made a great background for all the photos. We celebrated Janmaashtami in Paris by going to Disneyland! The weather was wet but advantageous because it meant the queues were shorter. We got to see the Dream Parade but missed out on the fireworks display; a bit disappointing. The final day arrived too soon and we made our way to

where we had a final appointment to climb the Eiffel tower. But before that, we had a great time shopping on the Avenue des

Champs-Élysées where top designer

brands and a massive Louis Vuitton store were located. We arrived at the Eiffel Tower and made it to the top noisily (true Satwara-style!). The view was immense! Afterwards, we had enough time for a nice picnic in the Tower’s shade.

We had dinner on the ferry home, sad that the trip was nearly over. But even the last coach ride back home from Dover sped by with a final game of Antaakshari.

The trip, for all those who came, was most memorable. The atmosphere, the sights, the meals, the jokes. The trip was a huge success so next time, book your places early, because I know I certainly will!

Heart Attack

Most heart attacks occur as a result of coronary heart disease. This is when the

coronary arteries (the arteries that supply blood and oxygen to the heart muscle) become narrowed by a gradual build- up of fatty materials within their walls. This fatty material is called an atheroma.

If the atheroma becomes unstable, it may break off and form a blood clot which can block the coronary artery. The heart muscle is starved of blood and oxygen and may become permanently damaged. This is called a heart attack. During a heart attack, life-threatening heart rhythms may develop. This is why a heart attack is a medical emergency.

If you ever think you are having a heart attack, call 999 immediately. What are the symptoms? The symptoms of a heart attack vary from one person to another. They can range from a severe pain in the centre of the chest, to having mild chest discomfort that makes you feel generally unwell. Women may experience different symptoms to men. If you experience any of these symptoms, don't ignore them. Call 999.

The common or classic symptoms of a heart attack include:

• central chest pain • the pain can spread to the arms, neck or jaw • some people can feel feel sick or sweaty as well as having central chest pain • some people can feel short of breath as well as having central chest pain

The less common symptoms of a heart attack include: • a dull pain, ache or 'heavy' feeling in the chest • a mild discomfort in the chest that makes you feel generally unwell • the pain in the chest can spread to the back or stomach • some people say that the chest pain feels like a bad episode of indigestion • some people can feel a bit light-headed or dizzy as well as having chest pain

If you think you are having a heart attack call 999 immediately. It could save your life.

Can a heart attack be prevented? Coronary heart disease and heart attacks can often be prevented. Even if you have had a heart attack there are several things you can do to reduce the risk of heart problems in the future. These include:

• stopping smoking • controlling high blood pressure • reducing blood cholesterol levels • keeping physically active • achieving and maintaining a healthy weight • If you have diabetes, controlling your blood glucose as much as possible.
