EXPERIENCE THE VIBRANT ESSENCE OF SCOTLAND IN THE UPPER HUNTER VALLEY

20th Aberdeen Highland GamesWith time slipping by it won’t be long until the Games are upon us and this year, being the 20th anniversary, it’s going to be a big year. The Committee of the Aberdeen Highland Games, in it’s desire to leave a lasting effect on the local community, has undertaken two projects.

Firstly, a Cairn is to be constructed in Taylor Park, to commemorate the infl uence and impact the Scottish Community had in the development of the Hunter Valley as a whole but specifi cally the Upper Hunter.

Secondly, a new tartan, the Upper Hunter Tartan has been struck, being number 12,320 on the Scottish Register of Tartans. The tartan is for all and we hope to see it worn in its different forms in the years to come.

Some stock will be available through the Scone Visitor Centre and we will advise further as more stock comes to hand.

How St Joseph’s Students Get Around

A bus load of students and teachers travelled to Kilaben Bay on Lake Macquarie to join young people from around the Diocese performing the Way of the Cross. This event is a preparation for the Easter Celebrations and follows the events of Christ carrying his cross to Calvary. St Joseph’s students had responsibility for drama presentations at two of the 14 stations. The picture shows students dramatising Station 13, Jesus dies on the Cross.

Year 10 Agriculture students are busy preparing for Wingham Beef Week to be held early this term.

In preparation for Beef Week a group of the students visited Teys Abattoir. They viewed carcasses and learnt about what’s involved in the beef processing chain. At Wingham, the students will compete in meat judging and live cattle assessment.

The picture shows Year 10 students together with the carcasses they were judging.

Postcard from Japan....Konnichiwa!

St Joseph’s students have just returned from spending the school holidays in Japan. Twenty-four students and four teachers spent the time exploring many cultural, historical and educational sites around Japan, especially art museums, technology parks and shrines. A highlight of their visit to Tokyo was their experience of Tokyo Disney, the Japanese version of Disneyland. The photo above right shows one of our excited students waiting to enter the gates of Disneyland.

Aberdeen’s Golden Oldies for Golden OldiesThe next luncheon and movie to be held by the Upper Hunter Museum of Rural Life will be on Tuesday, 14th May, 2019 when they will present this Australian classic adventure set in the high mountains “The Silver Brumby” starring Russell Crowe, Ami Daemion & Caroline Goodall.

Auditorium doors at the Aberdeen Sport and Recreation Club will open at 11.30am and a three course luncheon will be served prior to the screening of the movie.

Free tea or coffee is available. A donation of $10 is requested to cover meal cost.

For catering, early bookings are essential and can be made by telephoning Daphne on 65 438 356.

Love your friends

Our friends need a little more love. It’s hard to tell the difference between their normal ageing pains and dangerous diseases. So show them a little medical love with our special senior wellness plan.

Ask about our wellness plan for senior pets!

Arthritis in petsBy Dr. Dani Muscat, Pet Medical.

Arthritis is a very common disease in our companion animals and it can occur in both dogs and cats. It is the most common cause of chronic pain in older dogs but it can occur in animals of all ages.

Arthritis is a progressive disease meaning that there is no cure. This complex disease can be well managed when pet owners and veterinarians work together to maximize a healthy and pain free life for your pet.

The winter months can be particularly diffi cult if you have a pet suffering from arthritis. If you suspect your pet may have arthritis or you have questions about treatment for arthritis please book a consultation with the knowledgeable vets at Pet Medical so we can make a plan to ensure your pet has the best quality of life.

Aberdeen Quilt AffairAberdeen Quilt Affair was well supported by the local community and the quilting community. Quilts were on display from Stroud, Singleton, Aberdeen, Scone, Parkville, Denman and Muswellbrook.

Everyone enjoyed the wonderful weather and the stall holders attracted a lot of interest from those attending. Viewers travelled from Branxton, Singleton, Cessnock and of course the locals came out to support the day.

I would like to thank everyone for their help and support in putting this together for the community. As you will understand volunteers help the world go around. The Upper Hunter Museum of Rural life helped man the doors, Aberdeen Lions club cooked the BBQ and the ladies from St Marks did a wonderful job making morning teas and light lunches. Thanks must also go to the Upper Hunter Shire, Aberdeen RSL and St Marks Church for the use of their building and grounds.

Donations from the day have been given to the Aberdeen Library, St Mark’s Church and the Aberdeen RSL.

The Viewer’s Choice award was won by Josephine Barnett with her embroidered wall hanging, second was Kaye O’Brien with her table runner featuring men’s neck ties third place went to Cheryl Hayes. Brenda Burgess from Flip La K generously gave the prizes of Flip La K templates and very sharp scissors. Third place received some fabric and threads. All three received an Aberdeen Quilt Affair coffee mug to remember the day.

The Ovarian Cancer volunteers raffl e was won by Gloria Watson of Aberdeen Congratulations Gloria. There was $277.50 raised for Ovarian Cancer from merchandise sales and the raffl e..

Thank you, Elizabeth Birch.

Treasures TalkTreasures has been so busy in the shop both selling and sorting.

It never ceases to amaze us at the support not only Aberdeen gives us but the surrounding towns.

We made a decision a long time ago to keep our prices low and we have not changed these for years. We are still able to meet our commitments and help the community. The rent is sometimes a challenge, however we have at the suggestion of some contributors of items, bumped up the price of same to help us out. This was the case with one generous family who have just moved. Even with the higher prices they were still bargains for such lovely pieces.

If there is anything you see around our town that you think could be an affordable project for us we appreciate your input, even if you mention it to the girls they will put it on the discussion list. We are always on the lookout for a project.

Our Thrifty Thursday has been going really well. Every Thursday free items and well priced long sitting small furniture are placed out front from 8.30am, so don’t forget Thrifty Thursday.

Thank you to all our girls for work they do, our shop looks fresh, is doing well and a happy place to visit.

Carole Johnston.

Aberdeen Care CadetsWe have been on a break over the school holidays and it is quiet without the boys of a Wednesday.

We have been sorting our show and tell items out and waiting to place them for the public to look at whenever they would like. The items will be at Kelly’s Top Pub and you will be able to walk in the main door and it will be a showcase straight ahead, you do not have to go near the bar.

Our packages have all arrived for HMAS Ballarat and we have received some lovely letters back.

The boys will have some reading to do. A special letter has come from the ships Commander, which will be lovely for them to keep, with a hint that a parcel is on the way to them, they will be very excited.

Anzac Day saw the boys march with their schools and family, with a wreath from ACPC placed once again this year. They are not just part of us but also part of footy teams, school groups etc and they are interactive with all.

Thank you to Marion Wilkins for giving us some wonderful items to send, something a little different and I am sure the deployed will enjoy receiving, Marion has supported us for so long and there would be hundreds of troops who were so happy to receive protective lip balm - Marion has given me so many over her Avon time. I have sent these to many countries from blazing heat to freezing cold, the balm equally needed in both temperatures.

As we wait for a new list to arrive, we will keep packing when the boys return and we are looking forward to sharing with you the next destination of our Care Packages.
