Welcome address from Dean

Dear Delegates,

On behalf of the Faculty Board, I would like to welcome you to the Royal College of Surgeons today for the first Module in our Sports and Exercise Medicine Structured Educational Programme (SEMSEP) 2019/2020. The objective of the SEMSEP programme is to provide additional educational opportunities in the new specialty of Sports and Exercise Medicine to our Fellows and Members, but also to medical practitioners and other allied healthcare professionals who are interested to learn more about Sports and Exercise Medicine.

The modules will be delivered during the academic year, and will address a number of topics.This topic is on the important and growing area of lifestyle medicine. There is a varied and experienced faculty and I hope you all derive significant benefit from this module.

Speakers’ Biographies

DR ROBERT KELLY MD MBA FRCPI FACC FESC FFSEMDr Kelly is a Consultant Cardiology & Lifestyle Medicine, Beacon Hospital. He is a Consultant in Cardiology for over 10 years practicing in Ireland. Dr Kelly trained all over world with several distinctions, awards and publications. He is Ireland’s clinical lead for European Lifestyle Medicine Organization. Dr Kelly’s interest is in heart disease, from treatment to prevention. He runs a Lifestyle Medicine program to help anyone and everyone to deal with stress, sleep, activity and nutrition to prevent, treat and reverse disease and ill health.

DR CIARAN COSGRAVEDr Cosgrave trained as a consultant in Sports & Exercise Medicine in Liverpool. He currently works in SSC Sports Medicine and is the Team Doctor to the Irish Senior Rugby Team. He has a wealth of experience in elite sport having worked for two seasons at Liverpool Football Club from 2011-2013 and as the Lead Doctor at Leinster Rugby from 2014-2016. He also provided medical cover at the 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games and subsequently accompanied Team GB at their High Altitude Training Camp in Iten, Kenya. Other experience in elite sport includes basketball, Northern Ireland Football, athletics, karate and judo. In each of these sports he not only provides high quality sports medicine but also works closely with athletes and coaches on performance enhancement.Dr Cosgrave graduated Medicine from Queen’s University Belfast in 2004 and after working for a year in Sydney, undertook an MSc in Sports & Exercise Medicine at Trinity College Dublin. Additionally he has qualifications in Sports Psychology and Medical Education. He has a particular interest in concussion and is the lead investigator for a study being conducted at SSC into the effects of concussion on adolescent rugby players.

DR WILBY WILLIAMSON BMEDSCI, BMBS, MSC SEM, MRCP, FFSEM (UK & IRE) DPHIL (OXON)Dr Williamson is a clinical academic Consultant Sports and Exercise Medicine Physician at the Sports Surgery Clinic, Santry, Dublin and an Assistant Professor in Physiology and Exercise Physiology at Trinity College Dublin. He completed his academic training and doctoral studies in Preventive Cardiology in the Division of Cardiovascular Medicine at the University of Oxford working with Dr Charlie Foster and Professor Paul Leeson.

His research targets understanding the influence of modifiable risk factors on heart-brain health and developing interventions and tool kits to promote health and well-being across the life-course. Core to his clinical and research practice are the use of advance magnetic resonance imaging techniques and vascular assessments to phenotype and stratify cardiovascular risk populations. This includes the use of stress testing such as exercise testing and orthostatic challenges. Dr Williamson’s recent work has focused on understanding the associations been cardiovascular risk exposures in younger adults and vascular brain health.

His expertise in brain imaging was developed completing post graduate training at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Neuroimaging, University of Oxford. He has also trained in public health and epidemiology at the University of Oxford and Cambridge University. He completed Undergraduate Medical Training and an MSc in Sports and Exercise Medicine at the University of Nottingham. Prior to entering higher specialty clinical training he trained in general medicine and acute critical care on rotation through University Hospitals in Nottingham and London. In addition, to his mainstream clinical academic work he has had the privilege to work in a variety of exciting environments ranging from Xtreme altitude research trips on the peak of Mount Rosa to providing athlete medical support at the London 2012 Olympics.

DR DAN DAVEYDaniel is a performance nutritionist who works with the Dublin Senior football team and Leinster Rugby as well as athletes in other sports including golf, hockey, athletics and cycling. He is also the Author of the nutrition and recipe book ‘Eat Up, Raise Your Game’ published in

September of this year and founder of the online platform daveynutrition. Daniel believes that enhancing elite athletes’ and recreational athletes understanding of appropriate nutrition practices is vitally important for long-term optimum health and performance. In order to achieve this, he believes in providing this information in an understandable, practical and enjoyable manner. The approach is based on translating the latest nutrition science into practical advice and recipes for people to achieve their health and performance goals using fresh and simple ingredients. Time is a valuable commodity in the modern world so his recipes, tips and tricks acknowledge and address that. Cooking is a skill that Daniel believes is a critical element to achieving health and performance goals, it is because of this that Daniel invests his energy on social media showing people how to prepare meals in a simple and enjoyable manner.

Daniel received his BSc in Agricultural Science from University College Dublin, holds an MSc in Nutrition, Physical Activity & Public Health from the University of Bristol and is completing a Dip in Sports Nutrition from the International Olympic Committee. Daniel is also a Certified Strength &

Conditioning Specialist (C.S.C.S) with the NSCA, and has completed the national qualification in Exercise and Health Studies.

Daniel has played Gaelic football at intercounty level for Sligo and won an All-Ireland club football medal in 2016 with Ballyboden St’ Enda’s in Dublin. His own playing and training experience allows him to understand the practical implications of applying the science of sports nutrition to achieve peak physical condition and performance in sport.

MR GERRY HUSSEYGerry Hussey is a proud west of Ireland man, born and raised in the rugged and inspiring landscape of west of Ireland. When Gerry is not at home he can be found leading and building some of the world’s most successful sports and business teams.

Gerry has been at the forefront of building high performance teams, organisations and individuals in Olympic and Professional, sport and the corporate organisations. Gerry has prepared and led teams for success at Olympic Games, Heineken cups, World cups and All Ireland Championships. His vast experience has seen him work across many elite teams including, Professional Rugby,

MR NIALL O’DONOGHUENiall has a strong appetite for psychology attaining two masters degrees in performance and organisational psychology. Niall gained invaluable early practical training from the U.S. and continued his journey by becoming an accredited sport and performance psychologist in Ireland where he supports a number of our Olympic hopefuls at the Irish Institute of Sport.

More recently Niall has experience applying mental skills training principles with executives or ‘corporate athletes’ and set up a consultancy to support businesses upgrade their culture and performance. Niall is fascinated with people and performance in all performance crucibles.

MR JOHN KELLEHERJohn Kelleher is the CEO and Founder of Cellnutrition Sport Ltd – a company which mirrors his objectives in improving the physical and mental wellbeing of athletes of all levels, and the general population, at large.

DR HELEN FRENCH PHD, MSC, BPHYSIO, DIP STAT, DIP HPE, MISCP Dr Helen French is a senior lecturer in physiotherapy in the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (RCSI), Dublin, Ireland. She completed her PhD on the effectiveness of exercise and manual therapy for hip osteoarthritis in 2011. She previously worked as a musculoskeletal Clinical Specialist in a large public teaching hospital. She is a level 2 (specialist) member of the Chartered Physiotherapists in Musculoskeletal Therapy (CPMT), a clinical interest group of the Irish Society of Chartered Physiotherapists. She was awarded a Fulbright-Health Research Board (HRB) Scholar award in 2017.

Her research interests include causes and management of hip pain across the lifespan and the role of exercise and movement control for joint health, including the prevention and management of osteoarthritis. She has published many scientific papers and presented research findings at national and international conferences.

DR NOEL MC CAFFREYNoel McCaffrey is a sports and exercise medicine specialist. He developed and directed the Dublin City University-based MedEx programme over 10 years and has now left DCU to lead the national roll-out of this programme, rebranded as ExWell Medical. He graduated from UCD Medical School in 1983 and studied Sports Medicine in London 1986-88. He also worked in UCD Medical School from 1990-1996 developing and directing a new MSc Sports and Exercise Medicine Programme. He is a Foundation Fellow of the Faculty of Sports and Exercise Medicine, director of a private sports injury clinic and also runs a musculoskeletal injury clinic in Cappagh National Orthopaedic Hospital.

ExWell Medical offers supervised exercise programmes to patients with diverse chronic illnesses on referral from health care professionals. A key component of the ExWell Service is exercise for cancer patients at all phases of the cancer journey.

MS MARTINA GALLIVANMartina Gallivan commenced practicing Weight Management in 2010 specialising in behavioural modification for weight management using the core disciplines of (CBT) Cognitive Behavioural Therapy and (NLP) Neuro Linguistic Programming.

With over 30 years experience working within organisations such as Elan Pharmaceuticals PLC, and the Volkswagen / Audi Group, Martina has utilised this extensive experience within the Corporate Market and combined her accreditations as an NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming Practitioner) and also CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy Practitioner) as well as her extensive knowledge and success in weight management. This culminated in the formation of a lifestyle management practice with renowned consultant Cardiologist Dr Robert Kelly and established RK Cardiology Healthy Living into a highly successful program practicing in next-generation lifestyle medicine.

Martina holds Diplomas in Neuro Linguistic Programming, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, and Nutritional therapy. She also holds a Diploma in Business Management.

MR MOTTY VARGHESEMotty Varghese is a Registered Sleep Technologist (licensed by Board of Registered Polysomnography Technologists in the USA) and also holds a Mini fellowship in Behavioural Sleep Medicine from Perelman School of Medicine under UPenn. He worked as a Senior Sleep Physiologist in St James’s Hospital and currently runs Sleep Therapy Clinic where he offers non pharmacological treatment for behavioural sleep issues and insomnia.
