Active Families Tim Norman

Everyone knows that kids should be physically active and need to exercise regularly to be physically fit. It is suggested that kids exercise at least 30 minutes every day. Whether kids are overweight or at a healthy weight, regular physical activity is considered by most experts to be an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Set a good example If you want active kids, be active yourself. If they don't see their parents making fitness a priority, they can quickly turn into couch potatoes. Parents need to be good role models and encourage their children to get outside to play. Kids are always watching their parents, so be sure they see parents who exercise, and enjoy it.

Some easy suggestions to get you and your kids to move Walking: Walk whenever possible instead of driving short distances. As long as you’re only getting a few items and it is not too far, walk to the grocery store with your kids. Park: Try strolling through a local park. Feel free to stop in the park to throw around a frisbee or a football. Bubbles: One person blows the bubbles so everyone else can chase them. Marching: Have a parade around the house (inside or out). You can give everyone toy musical instruments, or pots, pans, plastic containers, and wooden spoons. You can take turns taking the lead and setting the pace. Try making up silly marching steps and cheers. Dancing: Put on your favorite songs and dance away. ♦

Good study habits to start the year off right Martina Dagg-Norman

Busy schedules keep most children from making studying a priority. It is important to ensure that the time they spend studying is quality time. Here are some tips to help your child get the most out of their study time.

1. Find a place in the house that is free from distractions (television, music, other family members, etc.) and make it their spot to do homework and study.

2. Encourage your child to do homework/study at the same time every day 3. Make yourself available to them if they need some assistance 4. Keep their study/homework area clean and stocked with things they may need (pencil, eraser,

extra paper, ruler, calculator, etc.). 5. Help them stick with their routine by offering rewards at the end of the week.

When your child does not have homework, encourage them to go and read for a while. If you are unsure how much time they are expected to study at home, feel free to ask their teacher. The rule I use is to multiply their grade by ten and that is roughly how many minutes a night. It is important that they stick to the routine so that they can establish good study habits. Above all, encourage your student and praise them for what they do.♦

Back to School Blues Martina Dagg-Norman

Every child who struggles in school either academically or socially discovers that the summer is just not long enough. If your child struggles with going back to school, I have some tips to make the transition a little easier.

It is important to recognize the signs to know your child is dealing with the back to school blues. Some of these include headaches, stomachaches, more crying than normal, and new problems at bedtime.

The best way to help any child is routine, routine, routine. Try to keep wake up and bed times consistent all week long. Have your children pack everything in their bags except their lunches the night before.

Tips for younger children – read stories about

school; send them with a family photo that they can look at while they are at school.

Tips for older children – vocalize your

expectations; place notes in their lunch bag to let them know how important they are.

Remember that all children look forward to scheduled family time. Have one night a week that is set aside for a family night when you play a board game, watch a movie, and/or have something special for dinner. On the weekend, find something fun to do as a family. Never forget to tell your children, regardless of age, that you love them. ♦
