As Aye Sea It - From the Crow’s Nest
It’s almost time to Ring Those Bells!!
Salvation Army Red Kettle Program
For the 3rd year we are back at Publix on the corner of
Tamiami Trail and Bay St., just south of the Sarasota
Ford dealer. Our 1st year (2014), 23 folks volunteered
and raised $3140; and, in 2015, a total of 33 volunteers
raised $5317! How about this year we shoot for $6000 and 40 folks volunteer-
ing? We have 2 hour slots between the hours of 11AM to 7PM, from 24 No-
vember through 24 December. Look for the sign-up sheet on page 13 in this edi-
tion of the South Wind and call Cdr Bob at (941) 504-8381 to sign up.
Where did the Year go? I’m looking at the calendar and it’s almost
Thanksgiving! Where did the year go? It went lots of places: kayaking almost
every month; Cruise to Eats; Cruise & Rendezvouses; Super Bowl Party; D22
fall & spring meetings; USPS National meeting in Orlando; 8 ABC classes; 10
Small Boat Maneuvering Classes; 49 Thursday luncheons; 10 EXCOMS; 10
Bridge meetings plus a Bridge work shop; virtual trainer; 3 yacht clubs where
we put on seminars and set up the BSVT; Marine Max ABC boat rides; 3 boat
shows; Octoberfest; Holiday Parties; and the list goes on and on. It was a big
year for this Bridge and what a job they did!
Our web site is totally revamped; the online directory will be available in Janu-
ary of 2017. Our web site is also completely interactive – you can sign up and
pay for any of our classes, check out the latest calendar of events, order things
from the ship’s store and many more things. It’s a shame that National doesn’t
look beyond cosmetics when they review web sites and consider their function-
ally rather than cutesy banners and such. Thanks, IT Team - Lt/C Gary Wells,
AP, Scott Gonello and P/Lt/C Al Burmeister, SN - great job!
Our Treasurer, Lt/C Barbara Wolfe, P added the Amazon Smile rebate program
and cash rewards credit cards for paying our bills. She took on the handling of
all reservations for all the events and researched rental and service agreements
that hadn’t been looked at for years. The Squadron is very fortunate to have such
a creative person BUT she needs an assistant. Folks, let’s help her out.
Our Secretary, Lt/C Sylvia Wedge, P creates awesome flyers, and puts out the
weekly updates as well as weekly fires! Her contributions go above and beyond
every week. We will miss you Lt/C Sylvia Wedge. Thanks all for you do and
have done, those Princess slippers will be hard to fill .
Our SEO Lt/C Gary Wells, AP – Wow, I don’t even know where to start. Maybe
the first place—the Education Department is in the black. Not only does Gary
take on the SEO gig but also the rental committee, the house committee, UPSP’s
National Radio Committee, boat show set up and tear down, the web site and
much more. Thanks Gman for awesome year. I don’t know how you kept it all
together, but you did.
The Editor is telling me to stop as no more room in this issue. Next month we
will look at the XO Lt/C Richard Winston, SN; and, of course, the best AO I
have known since I have been here — Lt/C Sharon LaPrad, P and, yes, Assistant
A/O 1/Lt Rick LaPrad, AP too!!

EXECUTIVE OFFICER’S UPDATE
LUNCHEON SPEAKERS
Proud To Be SPSS
On 1 October 2016 many of us attended the District
22 Fall Conference in Punta Gorda, Florida. I for
one, and, surely the rest of the representatives of the
SPSS, were pleasantly surprised to hear that our
squadron was the recipient of several National
awards — in addition to recognition awards from the
District. I probably shouldn’t have been surprised because I have always
known that this squadron has many talented individuals who work tire-
lessly to make SPSS one of the best in the country. Still, it was gratifying
for us to receive the acknowledgement from others at the national organ-
ization level.
Four special awards include the following:
The Robert A. Green Award. This Public Service Announcement Award,
presented by the USPS National Public Relations Committee, went to
Michael P. Scahill P, for the SPSS Boaters Relocation Guide. This guide
was rated in first place of all submissions. SPSS received a trophy and
Mike a certificate. As many of you know, Bob Green was a member of
our squadron and a friend to many of us. Bob also received USPS Na-
tional recognition for the many things which he spearheaded in the pub-
lic relations area. The award winning guide is available on the SPSS web
site; hopefully, you have had a chance to review it.
The Carl C. Mahnken Commander’s Cup Award. This award, for finish-
ing in first place nationally, was given to P/C Leon Warshaw, S and his
team of SPSS members who created the Power Point presentation used
by our speakers’ bureau to inform many groups about SPSS.
A USPS National Certificate of Appreciation was awarded to 1/Lt Rick
LaPrad, AP for excellence in use of the social media site Facebook to
promote the squadron’s social, educational, and civic pursuits. Rick’s
talent has helped to generate interest and recognition of the squadron’s
activities; the award is well deserved for his excellent work and effort.
P/D/C Howard Levine, SN received national recognition for 50 years of
membership in USPS. Howard’s extraordinary commitment of time and
contributions continue today and the recognition is well deserved.
In addition, SPSS received second place in the District 22 Cooperative
Charting Nautical Award. The award went to Lt Jose Garnham, SN who
also placed tenth nationally. Further, the second place Cape Coral Coop-
erative Charting award was awarded to SPSS, which was also seventh
place nationally.
Lt Jose Garnham, SN continues to be active and effective in promoting
the SPSS Cooperative Charting Program. Along with his captains, the
group has been instrumental in getting a lot of members on the water as
part of this important safety initiative to update local marine charts and
to identify water markers in need of replacement or repair. These efforts
have not gone unnoticed. SPSS received a National ranking for seventh
place and an Honor Roll Certificate. Certificates also went to Lt Jose
Garnham, SN, 1/Lt Rick LaPrad, AP, Lt Frank Tugwell,

ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICER’S UPDATE
From the Bottom of the Bridge
Editor’s Note: Lt/C Sharon LaPrad, P is taking a well
deserved vacation so your Editor will try to report as
promised on the SPSS October activities in her absence.
Octoberfest on 8 October was a fun evening with plenty of
bratwurst, knockwurst, sauerkraut, German potatoes and
apple strudel for dessert. In addition D/Lt Sandy Boos
made her delicious homemade cucumber salad and potato salad. Wearing
lederhosen talented accordionist Bill Millner and P/C Bill Anderson, AP in
good voice led thirty-eight attendees in a repertoire of German songs adding
a lot of fun to the evening. Many thanks to our great Social Chairman D/Lt
Sandy Boos and her set up, serving and clean up crew of P/C Bill Anderson,
AP, Lt Joe Andrade, P, P/C Bill Boos, N, Susan Deshaies, Roxanne Fox,
Mary Messenger, and Rich and Mary Reiter. A big thank you to all for a
great evening.
There were fourteen kayakers on Saturday, 22 October at Jiggs Landing in
Bradenton. A great fall paddle in the Braden River followed by lunch at Lin-
ger Lodge. Thank you to event Captain P/C Ed Fisch, SN and trip leader
Lt Joe Andrade, P. Pictures of this event are on page 18 of this South Wind.
Be sure to mark your calendars for the Thanksgiving Feast & Auctions at

MICHAEL P. SCAHILL, P
CONGRATULATIONS!
ROBERT A GREEN AWARD
D/P/C HOWARD I. LEVINE, SN
CONGRATULATIONS!
50 YEAR MEMBERSHIP AWARD
Howard joined the Swift Water Power Squadron in Buf-
falo, NY in 1966. As he was working full time and had 2
children he spent his first four years earning the rank of
SN, but did not earn any merit marks. In 1970 he became
a member of the Safety Committee and then Committee
Chair. He served on the Swift Water Bridge as Treasurer
– 3 years, as AO, XO and then Commander. Howard said
by being in the squadron for 12 years before becoming
Commander he had a good feel for the squadron, the dis-
trict and USPS. In 1980 he joined the District 6 (the en-
tire state of New York except New York City) Bridge as
Treasurer then AO, XO and District Commander.
Howard also served on the USPS National Marketing
Committee with Bob Green who encouraged him to be
on the national bridge; however, Howard said “no” due
to family and work commitments. In 1989 the Levine’s
moved to Allentown, PA where he was a company CEO
and national transferred his membership to the
Lackwanna squadron.
Moving to Sarasota in 1995 Howard transferred his
membership to the Sarasota Power Squadron keeping an
associate membership with Swift Water Squadron. In the
waters of Sarasota he and Myrna have enjoyed cruising
in their 35’ SeaRay Tiki Two Baby. Since joining SPSS
he became a member of the Safety Committee and is
now the Chair of Safety. He and his committee organize
the Flare Demonstration, the First Aid – CPR/AED Sem-
inar and the Fire Extinguisher Demonstration. Luckily
for SPSS he is a great auctioneer and during the 2015
Thanksgiving Feast Auction raised $2000 for SPSS in
twenty minutes!
He has been married to Myrna for 59 years – in June
2017 they will celebrate their 60th anniversary. His de-
gree in Chemical Engineering, an MBA and PhD in Edu-
cation gave him a career in the plastic’s industry and
some adjunct evening class teaching at Pennsylvania

WELCOME NEW MEMBERS
Your SPSS Bridge has become aware that many of our
members no longer have boats but would love to spend
time on the water. At the same time, many boat owners
would welcome other members on their under-used boats
or boats with ample room. So we have decided to launch
our very own “Ride Along” group to match members who
would like to spend some time on the water with
fellow members.
Here’s how it will work: If you would like to Ride
Along, simply email Captain Bob Wolfe at
[email protected] or call him (941) 371-1284. He
will maintain a list of members who would like to spend
some time on other members boats. We will encourage
Member Boat Owners who are planning a morning or af-
ternoon on the water and would love company, to call
Bob for the names and contact info of those on the Ride
Along list. Your host or Bob will seek to match up
members by calling or emailing those on the list.
You can be on the Ride Along list even if you own a boat
and simply want to see how the other members do it or
even if your interest is only in certain events or certain
times. A great opportunity for NEW MEMBERS or
Members who simply want to socialize.
SO JOIN THE RIDE ALONG GROUP AND HAVE
SOME FUN ON THE WATER!!
D/Lt Robert Wolfe, S

FUND RAISING
AMAZONSMILE!!!
Simply by shopping at Amazon you can automatically
donate 0.5% of the purchase price of nearly everything
you buy to the Squadron. WOW that’s great, you’re proba-
bly saying!!! How can I do that? It’s very simple. Rather
than going to Amazon.com go to AmazonSmile.com. It’s
really the same website, but when you buy through
AmazonSmile you are automatically making a charitable
donation.
Once you’re on the AmazonSmile page you’ll see the
word Supporting in the upper left. It is there that you have
to enter our name. Since nearly a million charities partici-
pate it’s important that you choose us. Therefore, enter
united states power squadron sarasota. Adding Sara-
sota is very important, because many, many, many other
Squadrons already participate. In a fraction of a second we
will pop up and all you have to do is hit the Select button
and from then on whenever you go to AmazonSmile and
purchase something, we get a little something too! The
important thing to remember going forward is to shop
through the AmazonSmile.com website and not just Ama-
zon. It took me a while to remember to do that, but you’ll
probably pick it up faster than I did!

A NOTE FROM THE TREASURER
More great donations have arrived for our
Silent Auction, Live Auction and Basket
Raffle which will take place at the Thanks-
giving Feast on 19 November 2016 at our
Squadron headquarters. You won’t want to
miss this fun event. Sign up for the Thanks-
giving Feast right away - flyer on page 9.
Our December Treasure Chest Raffle is fast approaching.
We will be drawing the winners at the Holiday Dinner
Dance at Michael’s On East on 13 December 2016. You
should have received your raffle tickets by now and if you
didn’t please let Joan (941) 927-8141 or me (941) 806-
7296 know. If you need more tickets we will be happy to
send them to you. Thank you for helping with this fund
raiser and selling tickets.
We are again so fortunate to have such generous
supporters who have responded to our request for help with
our Auctions and Treasure Chest Raffle.
Thank you also SPSS members who have collected gift
certificates from your favorite restaurants and other dona-
tions. Because of you, we have such wonderful prizes for
both events.

Mike Scahill, P, Cdr Bob Holmes, AP, Lt Chris Messen-
ger, AP, Scott Gonnello and Lt Peter Roth, JN. All are to
be commended for their efforts and commitment.
During the ceremonies, a USPS National Certificate of
Educational Proficiency was given to Hugh O. Thomas,
AP for his accomplishments. Also, District 22 recognized
two Sarasota students and the schools which they attend
for the Youth Poster Contest. This program promotes the
use of life jackets and boating safety through the efforts of
SPSS members. Recipients were: Sophie Buchmeier from
Phillippi Shores Elementary, ages 9-11, second place; and,
Caylen Robinson of Colonial Oaks Park School, ages 6-8,
third place.
A special thank you and congratulations goes out to all
who won awards as well as to those who were instrumen-
tal in making recommendations to the district and to na-
tional. An extra thank you to those members who support
SPSS by contributing to the many yearly events in which
we engage. Your efforts help to generate the pride and
recognition in our squadron.

USPS RECOGNIZES 1/LT RICK LAPRAD, AP
By the time y’all read this our very own 1/Lt Rick
LaPrad, AP will have received National recognition at
the D22 Fall Conference for his postings on the SPSS
Facebook page. I got a call from the USPS National
Public Relations Chair who wanted to know about our
Facebook page and who did the posting. She said they
thought it was the BEST Facebook page and had the
best daily postings of all USPS Squadrons.
1/Lt Rick LaPrad—is the MAN I said—proud as I
could be. So after I hung up—and I thought about the
conversation I just had—a little tear came to my eye—
as I thought about the Man who probably started it
all—Lt Randy Schweitzer, S and how proud he would
have been of this recognition. Randy would just ham-
mer me with “Cdr see how many people liked our page,
Cdr see how many people saw our page, Cdr see how
many people found our web site after they found our
FB page” and on and on—he was a tireless promoter of
SPSS. So, congratulations 1/Lt Rick—outstanding job!
