children are unsupervised and out of school. Contact Safe Kids Grand Forks for a free gun lock to keep your family safe.
Did you know that half of all households in America have at least one firearm? For that reason and now that gun hunting season is behind us, it is important that all guns and firearms be properly locked and
stored. Approximately 150 children die each year from accidental gunshot wounds and hundreds more are injured or permanently disabled. Accidental shootings among children most often occur when
Gun Safety
Winter weather is on it's
way, whether we want it
to come or not! To keep
your child safe during the
winter months Safe Kids
Grand Forks offers the
following tips:
-The roads can be
slippery! Remind your
children when walking to
school or friends' homes
to be extra cautious when
crossing streets. Drivers
may want to stop for
pedestrians but may be
unable to do so due to
road conditions. Always
look to make sure the
wheels of the car have
stopped moving (not
sliding) before you cross
the street.
-The snow banks that pile
up on berms and corners
are very enticing to
children. Please remind
children not to play on
these snow banks as it
puts them at risk for
sliding into the street.
-Pay attention to weather
reports and avoid outdoor
activities during severe
wind chills and extremely
low temperatures.
-When the wind causes
blowing snow, visibility is
reduced making it more
difficult for drivers to see
children. Having children
wear bright or dark
colored clothing and/or
adding reflective material
to coats and backpacks
will increase their
visibility so they don't
blend into the snow bank.
If you are in need of a
free reflective zipper pull,
please contact Safe Kids
Grand Forks.

Staying Warm
Staying warm is part of staying safe during the winter
months. Here are some tips to remember:
- If your child goes to an empty house after school have a
backup plan incase your child is locked out or the door is
frozen shut.
- Dress kids in layers so they stay warm and dry.
-Be sure your child wears a hat, scarf and mittens and
keep ears covered.
- If your child's clothes become wet while playing
outside, have an extra set to change into so they can
continue to play outside and be dry.
- Hats and scarves made of lambs wool are great
insulators and will keep your little ones warm.
- Mittens keep hands warmer than gloves since the air
has more room to circulate.
- When going on school bus trips, be sure to pack your
winter essentials incase the bus breaks down.
