Sandi Castle Presentations

Attention: Grade 4 Teachers!

Master Sand sculptor Sandi “Castle”

Stirling has been educating and

entertaining Grade 4 students in the

Hamilton-Wentworth schools since 2002

with her exciting “Sandi Castle

Presentations”.

She has developed a fun and unique

way to introduce Medieval Times and/or

Rocks and Minerals to the students

through the use of visual displays,

videos, creative imagery and the

creation of a 3 foot Medieval looking

sand castle keep.

This fast paced information packed

presentation keeps the students

enthralled for 90 minutes.

While most of the focus of this

presentation is on sand, the class will be

introduced to different types of rocks and

minerals. Igneous, sedimentary and

metamorphic are discussed and

displayed along with samples of fossil

rocks from Lake Erie, coal from Atlantic

City Beach, lava from Hawaii and

soapstone from Brazil.

The class explores why some beaches

have stones on it while others have soft

sand and how beaches are formed.

Sandi shows how erosion from single

drops of water over a period of time can

break down a rock into sand.

In an entertaining way, she pulls

consumer products made from sand out

of a bag. She also identifies the many

uses of rocks in manufacturing.

Medieval Times Visual Arts Items needed for the Presentation

Sandi introduces the students to the

tools she uses to carve and to create

textures on her castle.

She gives the students ideas on what

tools they can use when at the beach or

in their sand box. During the

presentation, the class will watch a video

demonstrating the fine art of

sandsculpting at a beach.

During the final 20 minutes of her Sandi

Castle Presentation, Sandi carves a 3ft.

medieval looking castle-keep out of

sand. Parts of the castle are discussed

that relates to the part she is carving. A

question and answer period is held at

the time of the carve.

* the use of a TV/VCR

* three 5 ft. tables for displays

* the use of the gym or a main level classroom

* a bucket of water

* children should be seated on chairs

Structures

Sandi covers the topic of free standing

structures made from sand and how

vulnerable they are to the elements.

A good foundation is needed to hold the

force of sand. If not properly packed or

the wrong type of sand is used, the

structure may collapse.

Presentations held at 9:00am or 1:00pm duration of 90 minutes. If more than one Grade 4 class exists, the classes may be combined at no extra charge. Cost in Hamilton- Wentworth school district $150.Slightly higher outside Hamilton-Wentworth region.Call today to book your fun filled Sandi Castle Presentation.
