HISTORY

PLEASURE AS A SIGNATURE

Overmorethantwocenturies,Sandeman has ba-sed itssuccessona rarecapacity for innovationcombinedwithadeepknowledgetransmittedfromgenerationtogeneration.Today,Sandeman is the mostfamoussymbolofPortworldwide.ButitalsooffersSherry,MadeiraandBrandiesofexcellence.

ItsfounderwasGeorgeSandeman,ayoungandambitiousScotsman fromPerthwho launched in1790awinebusiness in London.With a loanof300poundsgrantedbyhis father,hebought thefirstcellarofwineandbegannegotiatingPortWineandSherryfromTom’sCoffeeHouse.

ThedynamismandcompetenceofGeorgeSandemandictatedtherapidgrowthofthecompany:in1795, ithadopenedabranchinCadiz,Spain,andin1811Sandemanboughtacellar inVilaNovadeGaia,Portugal.Wecanstillfindinthecorridorsofthiscellarmorethan2,000agingcasksofSandemanPortWines.Intheearlynineteenthcentury,theSandeman wines were being dispa-tchedtomultiplecountriesinEurope,NorthAmericaandSouthAmerica,Africa,Asiaandeventodestinations as far as New Zealand.

Sandemanwassoonknownasthefirstcompanytobrandabarrel,in1805,usingahotirontogivethewinethatitsoldanamethatguaranteedqualityandprestige.Eventhough,inthelatenineteen-thcentury,theconceptofbrandpassedvirtuallyunnoticedbyconsumers,Sandeman again wanted togofurtherintermsofqualityandreputation.In1880,SandemanbecamethefirstCompanyofPortexportingbottledandlabeledwines.

The name Sandeman was registered as a trademark in 1877 (First Trademark Registrations Act-FirstLawontheRegistrationofTrademarks),makingitoneoftheoldestbrandsintheworld.

Thebrand’sfirstofficialagentwasappointedin1903andin1914,Sandemanhadalreadyanet--workofappointedofficialagentswhosoldthecompany’swinesthroughouttheworld.

PIONEERING SPIRIT ALSO IN ADVERTISING

Sandeman was one of the first wineries to label and advertise its wines.

Sandemanalsoinvested–asapioneerintheearlytwentiethcentury-inthedisseminationofitsproductsintheworld.Itwasalsooneofthefirstwineriestolabelandadvertiseitswines.Itsfirstad-vertisinginvestmentdatesbackto1905,butmoreelaborateandsubstantialcampaignsfollowed.Ahugeadinthe“IrishTimes”wasaccompaniedbyacommunicationfromadealerthata“case”ofsixSandemanwineswasavailablefor15s(75p)and“deliveredathome.”However,similaradvertisingcampaignsbeganappearinginContinentalEurope,intheU.S.andinthecountrieswhichwerethenknown as “the nations of the British Empire.”

In1914,SandemanannouncedalistofitsappointedofficialagentsinTheTimes.ThelistincludednamesofcompaniesinParis,Berlin,Moscow,Stockholm,NewYork,Montreal,Sydney,Wellington,JohannesburgandTientsin.

ThefirstSandeman’sluminousadvertisingboard,placedhighupinPiccadillyCircus,ontopoftheCaféMonico,wasswitchedonin1921.ThenewspaperTheLondonEveningNewswasimpressed,writing:“Leavesmen’sthroatswishingformore.”

Atthattime,advertisingwasnotcommonintheluxurymarketandSandeman´sadscausedoutrageinthebusiness.ThecompetitionevenstoppedtalkingtotheCEOofthebrand!However,revealingtruly innovativestyleandpositioning, theallegedscandalwasseennotasaproblem,butasanopportunity.

In1928,aScottishartistGeorgeMassiotBrowncreatedforthebrandamysteriousfigurethatwouldlaterbenamed“TheDon”:acharacterdressedwith theSpanishcaballeros fromJerez,usingaPortugueseuniversitystudentcloakandawide-brimmedhat.Thispowerfulimagewouldbecomeanintegralpartofthebottlelabelsandofthebrand’sadvertisingsincethe30soflastcentury,whenSandemanitselfbottleditsfirstvintageandtheWineandSpiritTradeRecordrecognizedthe“be-ginningoftheendofPortVintageWinesbottledbymerchants.”

In each passing minute, an average of 18 bottles of Sandeman are sold.

Thebusinesscontinuedtoprosperandin1965,Sandemanbegantoappearintelevisionadverti-sing,relyingonthepresenceof“TheDon”inaseriesofcreativeads.

Sandemanwasthefirsthousetoreceive,between1995and1996,theCertificateofQualityISO9001,andwasalsothefirstCompanyofPorttobecertifiedbythePortugueseGovernmentinac-cordancewiththePortugueseInstituteofQuality.

Ineachpassingminute,anaverageof18bottlesofSandemanaresold-aworldwidebranddis-tributedinover75marketsandaleadingbrandincountriessuchasBelgium,Italy,UnitedStates,Switzerland,Ireland,GermanyandJapan.

InJune2002,SandemanjoinedthecorporateholdingofSograpeVinhos,aleadinggroupinPor-tugalknownforitschoiceoffamilybusinesseswithfullrespectforitshistoryandtradition.Today,representingtheseventhgenerationofthefoundingfamily,GeorgeSandeman,whoisalsoamana-geratSograpeVinhos,maintainsthatthegreatestpleasureofbeinginthebusinessofPortWineistransmitted“bytheconsciousnessofbelongingtoafamilythathasforsolongbeenmakingwinescapableofgivingpleasuretosomanypeople.”

In fact, formorethan200yearshasSandeman been transmitting knowledge from generation to generationtopreservetheexcellenceofitswines,gladlyappreciatedworldwideforitsqualityandflavor,mysteryandseduction.AbrandwhosesignatureisFAMOUSFORPLEASURE.

THE FIGURE

“THE DON”: MYSTERY AND SENSUALITY

The strong pioneering and innovative nature of the brand Sandeman is faithfully mirrored in the figure of “The Don” - a mysterious and sensual character wrapped in a black cloak still used by the Portuguese students from Coimbra and with a Spanish caballeros’ “sombrero” from the Jerez region.

Designed by the Scottish Massiot Brown in 1928, at a time when the art market was ruled by French illustrators, “Don Sandeman” was popularized as a mysterious black figure that still lingers, and is rightly considered one of the ear-liest brand images, one of the first created logos in the world, surely marking the first time that a drink created a concept of a trademark, having in mind the approach to the global market.

This dramatic black figure with its glass of Port in hand, became part of Sandeman´s advertising campaigns and labels since 1930, being recognized worldwide as a symbol of prestige and quality. The figure has been re-touched over the years, but can still bring together the mystique and attraction that it showed the world when it was created. It is one of the icons with the highest brand recognition in the world of beverages - which tells us of its importance in affirming Sandeman as the only truly global brand of Port.

“The Don” was so named in 1935 when the image was included on the label of a Tawny released just before with the name Dry Don. Since then, it has become a constant silhouette in Sandeman labels.

In 1965, “The Don” first appeared on television, with the famous ad: Find The Don and you will find Sandeman. The most famous logo of the wine business went from a still figure in press advertisements, labels and posters outside to a seductive personality embodied in a television adver-tisement that is still remembered by many.

Several other commercials were produced in the following years in different markets, but all of them included the fa-mous and mysterious figure that was forever associated with the pleasure of drinking Sandeman.

THE REGION

THE DOURO WINE HERITAGE

The Douro region is since 1756 one of the first and most important demarcated regions of the world.

TheDouroregion,whereSandeman’sPortWinesareproduced,issince1756oneofthefirstandmostimportantdemarcatedregionsoftheworld.

Thebeginningofvinegrowingintheregionislostinthedustoftime,butitsincreaseisknownintheperiodofRomanoccupation.Inthetwelfthcentury,aftertheindependenceofPortugal,weseethebeginningofthedevelopmentofviticultureintheDouroValleyandthefirstexportstoFrance,datingbacktothethirteenthcentury.Nevertheless,itisonlyintheseventeenthcenturythatthefirstreferencetothename“Port”appears,appliedtotheDouroWine.

TheDouroDemarcatedRegionislocatedinthenortheastofthePortugueseterritoryandspringsthroughthevalleyoftheDouroRiver,limitedtothenorth,westandsouthbymountainranges,andborderedbySpaintotheeast. Itextendsover250.000hectares,ofwhichonlyabout18.3%areoccupiedbyvineyards,whichtakeupanareaofapproximately44.005hectares,sharedbyaround

25.680farmers.Smallfarmsstandoutandtheregionismainlydependentonthevine,althoughitisalsoverynotedthetraditionoftheproductionofoliveoilandalmonds.Inareasadjacenttothewest,cherryisrelativelywidespreadandtothesouth,inthehigherareas,applesarealsointensi-velygrown.

Intermsofclimate,themountainrangestothewestandthestrongengagementofthehydrographicnetworkallowtheexistenceofamicroclimatewheretheinfluenceoftheAtlanticisattenuated.Ge-nerally,wintersarelesswetandsummersarehotanddry.Theregionischaracterizedbydrynessandseasonaldistributionofrainfallisconcentratedinthelatefallandearlywinter,withasecondarymaximuminMarchorApril.

TheDouroDemarcatedRegionisdividedintothreesub-regions,definedaccordingtoclimaticva-riations:BaixoCorgo(sub-westernregion);CimaCorgo(sub-central)andDouroSuperior(easternsub-region,whichatitseasternlimittouchestheborderwithSpain).

Thepredominantvarietiesintheregionaremainlyfromredgrapes,withhigherincidenceinTourigaNacional,TourigaFranca,TintaRoriz,TintaBarroca,TintoCãoandTintaAmarela.Butthegreatdi-versityofexistingvarietiesintheDouroconfirmsthestrengthoftheregionandreflectsitsexcellentconditionsforvinegrowing.

InthesevenfarmsofSograpeVinhos,withmorethan450hectaresrangingfromtheCimaCorgototheDouroSuperior,thevarietieswhichoccupymoreareainplantedvinesaretheTintaAmarela,TintaBarroca,TintaRoriz,TourigaFranca,TourigaNacionalandTintoCão–inredgrapes-andMalvasiaFina,Viosinho,DonzelinhoandGouveioinwhitegrapes.Innewplantings,however,itwasdecidedtooptforasmallernumberofvarieties,selectedbytheirparticularcharacteristics,suchasTourigaNacional,TourigaFranca,aspecificcloneofTintaRoriz,calledPédePerdiz,Sousão,Ali-canteBouschet,Donzelinho,TintaFranciscaandTourigaBrasileira.Inwhitegrapes,wecanmostlyfindViosinho,ArintoandCódegadoLarinho.

IntheDouroregion,SograpeVinhosispresentinthebestplacesfortheproductionofPortwineandDOCwines,withfarmsinthesubregionofCimaCorgoandDouroSuperior.InthecaseofSande-man,themostemblematicfarmisthebeautifulQuintadoSeixo,situatedinaprivilegedlocationintheDourovalley,betweenRéguaandPinhão.

THE FARM

SEIXO: DOURO SEEN IN A GIANT “SCREEN”

QuintadoSeixoisoneofthelargestandmosticonicvineyardsintheheartofDouro,andthetrueshowroom of Sandemanintheregion.BenefitingfromaprimelocationonthesouthernshoreoftheDouroriver,situatedbetweenthecityofRéguaandthevillageofPinhão,andreferencedsincetheseventeenthcenturyintheproductionofPortWine,the71hectaresofvineyardsofQuintadoSeixohavebeenmarkingtheLandscapeofDouro,throughthehardworkofmanygenerations,andarenowthecradleofthebestSandemanwines.

Intraditionalslopesofpre-phylloxeraschist,inmodernterraces,orinverticalvineyards,thisisthebirthplaceofdozensoftraditionalgrapevarietiesoftheDouroDemarcatedRegion,withaspecialpredominanceofTintaRorizandTourigaNacional,butinauniqueandunrepeatablemixturethatdefinesthisfarmandthequalityofitswines.

It’sfromtheoldvines,withnearly100yearsold,thatofferaprivilegedviewoftheriver,thatthegrapesareextracted,andthenusedinthelotsofthebestSandeman’sPortWine.

A WINERY IN THE MIDDLE OF THE SCHIST

ThewineryofQuintadoSeixowascreatedin2007,involvedinaprojectthatcombinedcuttingedgetechnologyandversatility.Equippedwiththemostadvancedwinemakingtechnology, thiswinerywasperfectly integratedintothelandscapeofDouro,respectingthetraditionassociatedwiththeproductionofhighqualitywines.

Thiscuttingedgetechnologyisvisiblefromthehoppers,wherethefirstselectionofthegrapesismade,at theharvesttime,uptothesuspendedstainlesssteelvats, facilitatingthemonitoringofallthewinemakingwork,withoutforgettingthegranitewine-presses.Thefermentationcontainerischosenaccordingtothetypeofwinetobeproduced.Thestainlesssteeltanksproducesamoreintenseandelegantwine.Inthetraditionalwine-pressesamoreclassicandmorerobustwineisproduced,whichnaturallyresultsinabetterextraction.

Quinta do Seixo is one of the largest and most iconic vineyards in the heart of Douro, and the true showroom of Sandeman in the region.

TheversatilityisexpressedindifferentvinificationmethodsavailableinQuintadoSeixo,aswellasinthepossibilityofproducingdifferenttypesofwinedependingonthewine-makingandcommercialpurposes.

ThewineryofQuintadoSeixowasequippedtoachievethevinificationofatotalof2,5millionkilos,ateverygrapeharvest,usingmultipletechniquesavailableinaccordancewiththetypeofwinesitwishestoproduce.Immediatelyuponarrival,therearefourhoppersthatallowthedischargeofgra-pesbytipperstrailers,bytanksorbyboxesof20kilos.Thereisalsoanareawheretheselectionofspecificgrapescanbemade,fortheproductionofhighestqualitywines.Thefermentationmaytakeplacebetween28stainlesssteeltanksand12lagareswithdifferentcapabilities,usingfourtypesofpossiblemaceration,includingmanualpump,robots,TurboPigeurandDelestage.

Alwaysfavouringgravity,inawinerywhichproducesonlyredwines,afterthefermentationthewi-nemakingteamcanchoosebetweenthreekindsofpressing:verticalmobileplate,horizontalmobileplateandpneumatics.

PORT WINE

PortWineisanaturallysweet,richandfortifiedwine,producedexclusivelywithgrapesfromtheDouroregion,inthenorthofPortugal.Itsproductionandmarketingaresubjecttospecificregula-tionsregardingthedesignationoforigin“Porto”,andtoapolicyofcontrolandsupervisionmanagedbycompetentbodies.

ThevinesandwinesareknownintheDouroregionsinceprehistorictimes,butitwasduringtheRomanandVisigothperiodsthattheybegantodevelop.

TheMethuenTreaty(1703),signedbetweenPortugalandEngland,wascrucialtothefutureofthePortWinesince,amongotherthings,itgrantedpreferentialratestothePortugueseproducts(inclu-dingwine),whenenteringEngland.

PortWine,asweknowittoday,didnotexistatthetime.ThewinesproducedintheDouro-fullbo-died,andwithagreatintensityofcoloursandscents-tendedtofermentwhentheyweretransportedbyboat.Toavoidthesefermentations,peopleaddedgrapespirittothewineinordertostabilizeitduringthetravel.Andthatwashow,bymerechance,thePortWinewasborn.

Duetotheruggedterraintheharvest,whichusuallytakesplacebetweenSeptemberandOctober,isdonemanually,traditionallybywomen.Themencarriedthegrapesinlargewickerbasketsthatcametoweigh60kgseach.

Nowadays,thegrapesaretransportedinsmallstackableboxes,avoidingthecrushingandconse-quentprematurefermentationofthegrapes,allowingamorecarefulandbetterqualitytreatment.

The grapes were then transported to the lagares (opened tanks in granite) where they were tram-pledbymen.Buttoday,onarrivalatthewinery,thegrapesareevaluatedintermsofoverallquality,destemmedandcrushed.Theresultingmassistransferredtostainlesssteeltanksorroboticpres-seswherefermentationtakesplaceundercontrolledtemperatures.

Fermentation is thenaturalprocessbywhich thenaturalsugarof thegrapes turns intoalcohol.WhatmakesthePortWinedifferentfromotherDourowinesisthefactthatitsfermentationisnevercompleted.Thefermentationprocessisstoppedatanearlierstagewiththeadditionofgrapespirit,intheratioof1:5.Thisisaneutralgrapespirit,withanaturalaromaandcolourfree,ithasabout77° ofalcohol,iswinedistilledanditisnotaged.

When fermentationachieves thedesired levels of sugar thegrapemust, still in fermentation, istransferredtoavat.Atthesametimeitisaddedthegrapespirit.Thisneedstoberapidlymixedwiththemusttoneutralizeandstopthefermentation.Theresultisanaturallysweetwine(c.100g/Lofresidualsugar),fortified(c.20%alcoholbyvolume),producedwithgrapesfromtheDouroregioninaccordancewiththeDOrules-i.e.,PortWine.

ThenewPortWinestillneedstoageforaminimum,ofabout,threeyearsbeforebeingmarketed.Initially,thewineisstoredintheDouro,inlargeoakorstainlesssteelvats.Thewinesarethentrans-ferredtotraditionalagingSandemancellarsinVilaNovadeGaia.Formerly,thetransportationofthewinewasmadeinpipesonboardofthetypicalRabeloboats.Today,thistransportationisdoneinstainlesssteeltankertrucks.Theseareproperlycontrolledandsealedbythecompetentauthorities,andensurethehighestqualityoftransportation.

UponarrivalatVilaNovadeGaia,thewinesaretastedandstored.Atthisstage,thewineshavedifferent potentialagingtimes(fasterorslower),andarestoredaccordingtotheirconsumerpurpose.

RegardingPort,theSandemanpresentsawiderangeofoptionswhichisdividedintodifferentran-ges:Classic,Premium,DeluxeandRareWines,markingastrongpresenceinthefourmaintypesofPort:the‘White’,usuallyayoungwinemadefromwhitegrapes,the‘Ruby’,whichisstoredinlargevatsandhasarapidaging,gainingnormallythearomaofredfruitsandchocolate,the‘Tawny’,thatagesinthetypicaloakpipes,gaining(duetoitsoxidativeprocess)thearomaofnutsanddriedfruits,andfinallythe‘Vintage’,knownasthebestthatwinehastooffer,bornexclusivelyfromextraordinaryharvestyears.Thiswinehastheabilitytoageinthebottle,andmaybestoredfordecadeswithoutlosingitsqualities.

InthePremiumrange,referencetotheFoundersReserveandImperialReserve.NoteworthyintherangeDeluxethe10and20YearsOldAgedTawnies,theLateBottledVintageandtheVauVintage.IntheRareWinesrange,theSandemanVintageandthe30and40YearsOldAgedTawniesarethe ones that stand out.

AsforthewinesofthesameregionofsouthernSpain,theSandemanofferincludesadozenfortifiedoptionsrangingfromSandemanCharactertoSandemanRoyalEsmeralda20YO.Thesewinesareproducedfromonlythreegrapevarieties-Palomino,PedroXimenezandMoscatel-andagedinthetraditional“bodegas”ofJerezdelaFrontera.

TheSandemanisalsoproudofthehighqualityandreputationofitsMadeirawine,whichincludestheMadeiraFineRichandtheMadeiraRainwater.Madeiraisanaturalandgenerouswine,producedfromgrapesgrownontheislandofMadeira,intheAtlantic,fromthegrapevarietiesofMalvasia,VerdelhoorSercial,amongothers,whoseuniquecharacterisgivenbythevinificationandagingprocessinthe“greenhouses”,beforebeingtransferredtowoodenbarrelswhereitisstoredforyears.

PlacesdedicatedtotheSandeman’sheritage,traditionandinnovationcanbefoundinSandeman’sCellarsandPortWineMuseum,inVilaNovadeGaia,andalsoinQuintadoSeixo,inValedoDouro,inthenorthofPortugal.

TheHouseofSandeman,whichhousestheCellarsandthebrandMuseum,islocatedonthewa-terfrontofVilaNovadeGaia,juststepsfromtheDouroriverandjustoutsidethehistoriccenterofOPorto,inaniconicgranitebuildingpurchasedbythefounderofSandemanin1811.

There,visitorsareinvitedtoliveanexperiencefullofmysteryandsensualitythatleadsthemtothediscoveryofthethesecretsandflavorsofPortWineandofabrandthathasbecameaglobalicon.

Apartfromtheinclusionofthemessage“Beresponsible.Drinkwithmoderation”,aswellasthelogoofthe“WineinModeration”projectinanycommunicationmadebySandemantotheconsu-mers,SograpeVinhospublishesanddistributesasmallbrochureentitled“Forahealthyconsump-tionofthewine”,inwhichitdisclosesthemainobjectivesoftheProject“WineinModerationbySograpeVinhos”andgivesadviceandguidelinesforresponsibleconsumption.
