Media Sandbox is the Michigan State University destination for talented and creative students who want to study the latest tools, work with the best faculty, and prepare for the media world of the future.In our Integrated Media Arts Curriculum, you can study film, television, graphic design, web design, game design, visual storytelling, journalism, advertising, 3D and animation, information graphics, documentary—and things nobody has thought of yet.

You’ll get hands-on classes in your freshman year, and explore and expand your creativity with students and faculty outside your area.

I. Fundamentals

Three classes (all three assume

introduction to critical thinking; play;

exploration; making; use of social media

for communication, distribution, and

critiquing and discussion)

Introduction of theories and principles

of storytelling, design, sound/music, and

imaging which are common across all

areas of media production.

Large college level classes, limited

equipment requirements, basic software,

team taught.

II. Professional technique/technology

Utilizing tutorials and professional

equipment and software, provides

introductory training in the creative tools

used by professional creators.

Moderate sized college level classes,

taught by experts in techniques, requires

some college provided equipment.

Eight one credit classes. There is a laptop

requirement by Fall 2012.

Student teams create real world media

solutions related to entertainment,

information, issues, and marketing/persuasion.

Team taught courses in JRN, TISM, and ADV,

with an emphasis on teamwork, innovation,

and cross departmental collaboration. Smaller

departmental classes, utilize less equipment,

but are at the highest level.

We offer students the opportunity to

specialize in and explore an interest area.

Admission by application. Open to students

across departments. Students admitted as

cohort, develop a sense of team over a two

year period.

STUDY ABROAD

Michigan State University ranks in the

country as the number one school for

study abroad participation among public

universities. That’s nearly 1 in 3 MSU

undergraduates who studied abroad. Each

major including Advertising, Communication,

Journalism, TISM, and Retailing majors all

have their own program customized to your

studies and your time. Study abroads are

offered fall, spring, and summer ranging

from one month to a semester and a year.

FINANCIAL AID

Apply for financial aid and apply for

FAFSA(www.fafsa.ed.gov) by 3/18/2013 to

receive grants, scholarships, loans, work-

study, and the necessary aid you may need.

Your aid status can be viewed on StuInfo/e-

Finaid with your MSU net ID and password.

The College of Communication Arts and

Sciences administers scholarship funds

established through the generosity of alumni

and friends. The College recognizes several

students each year who have demonstrated

superior work in the classroom or on the

job. In addition, College of Communication

Arts & Sciences students are eligible to

apply for scholarships administered by other

organizations. Eligibility and deadlines vary.

Various scholarships are available by major.
