Welcome

La Ciudad de San Fernando, se encuentra enclavada en el corazn de la Baha de Cdiz. Cuenta con una superficie de casi 30 km2 de extensin y 95.000 habitantes aproximadamente. Est comunicada con Cdiz a travs de una lengua de tierra de unos 8 kilmetros y al resto de la pennsula por el Puente Zuazo. La Isla de Len, como popularmente se la conoce, es un lugar de ensueo para el visitante por su benigno clima, su playa natural y el carcter extrovertido y hospitalario de sus habitantes.

El clima es de tendencia ocenica con influencia mediterrnea, lo que motiva que la mayor parte del ao sea suave y agradable, permitiendo disfrutar de sus playas durante 7 u 8 meses. La temperatura media anual es de 18,6 C y podr disfrutar de 3.100 horas de sol al ao; estas caractersticas unidas a su privilegiada situacin dentro de la Baha de Cdiz, hace de San Fernando un lugar agradable, accesible y desde el que se puede realizar numerosas excursiones hacia otros puntos de la provincia de Cdiz: Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos, Ruta del vino, Ruta de la Costa, Ruta del Toro, Ruta del Caballo y Ruta Americana.

San Fernando lies at the very heart of the Bay of Cadiz. Covering an area of almost 30 square kilometres, it has approximately 90,000 inhabitants. On one side, it is joined to Cadiz by a strip of land some 8 kilometres long and on the other side, the Zuazo Bridge links it to the rest of the mainland. The Isla de Leon (Island of Leon), as it is popularly known, is an enchanting place to visit due to its mild climate, its unspoilt beaches and the extrovert and hospitable nature of the people who live there.

San Fernando is on the Atlantic coast but its climate is also influenced by the Mediterranean. As a result, temperatures are mild and pleasant for most of the year and the beaches can be enjoyed for up to 7 or 8 months out of 12. The average annual temperature is 18.6C, with up to 3,100 hours of sunshine a year. These characteristics, together with its ideal location at the heart of the Bay of Cadiz, make San Fernando a pleasant, accessible place to visit, and an excellent starting point for numerous excursions to other parts of the province of Cadiz: the Route of the Little White Towns, the Wine Route, the Coastal Route, the Route of the Fighting Bull, The Route of the Horse and the American Route.

4An cuando sus orgenes, como el de Cdiz, se confunden con la mitologa, los hallazgos arqueolgicos en su suelo hablan de asentamientos pnicos, romanos, rabes,... No slo como solar de recreo de los hacendados de esos pueblos, sino como industria alfarera segn atestiguan numerosos hornos recientemente hallados. Sin embargo se considera como primer asentamiento urbano el que se crea en torno a un Carenero: el del Logar de la Puente, primitivo nombre de la ciudad y un Castillo: El de San Romualdo, actualmente en vas de restauracin.

La llegada de los Borbones al trono espaol y el paso de la Isla a la corona, unidas al crecimiento comercial de Cdiz, origina unos incipientes enclaves militares en el territorio que con el tiempo dan lugar al primer Departamento Martimo de Espaa y que fue ubicado en San Fernando, entonces conocido como La Isla de Len, por su estratgica y bien protegida localizacin a travs

de la intrincada red de caos, esteros y canales.

En 1766 se nombra su primer Ayuntamiento, tomando el nombre de Villa de la Real Isla de Len.

Un acontecimiento de vital importancia para el resto del Pas tuvo lugar en esta ciudad, ya que fue el nico territorio de la Espaa libre, en la que no puso el pie el francs invasor. Por esta circunstancia Las Cortes Generales y Extraordinarias estuvieron aqu reunidas desde el 24 de septiembre de 1810 hasta el 20

de febrero de 1811, fecha en la que se trasladaron a Cdiz. En reconocimiento a su valiente comportamiento durante la invasin napolenica, Las Cortes le concede el Ttulo de Ciudad y un nuevo nombre: SAN FERNANDO, en honor al Rey Fernando VII.

Like Cadiz, the origins of San Fernando are lost in mythology but in reality, archaeological finds reveal Punic, Roman and Arabic settlements and further reveal that these were not just desirable dwelling places for the welltodo citizens of these nations, but were centres of a thriving potterymaking industry, as is evidenced by the large number of kilns which have recently been unearthed. Nevertheless, it is thought that the first urban settlement grew up around a Caulkers Yard, otherwise referred to as the one in the Place of the Bridge, (a former name for San Fernando) and a castle, that of San Romualdo, the ruins of which are presently undergoing restoration.

The accession of the Borbons to the Spanish throne and the fact that the Island passed into the hands of the Crown, together with the commercial growth of Cadiz, gave rise to some incipient military enclaves in the town. With the passage of time, these grew to become the first Spanish Maritime Department. This Department was located in San Fernando, at that time known as the Isla de Len (Island of Leon), thanks to its strategic position and the protection afforded by the intricate network of canals, tidelands and channels.

In 1766, San Fernando named its first mayor and the town became known as Villa de la Real Isla de Leon (Town of the Royal Island of Leon).

An event of great significance for the rest of the peninsula took place in the town, since it was the only part of free Spain not to be invaded by the French. As consequence, the General and Extraordinary Parliament, assembled here from 24th September 1810 to 20th February 1811, when it moved to Cadiz. In recognition of its valiant performance during the Napoleonic invasion, the Parliament granted the town the title of City and also gave it a new name: SAN FERNANDO, in honour of King Fernando VII.

To the close observer, strolling through its streets, squares and avenues, SAN FERNANDO is a forest of haughty, ornate white battlements, grated shutters, bay windows, balconies, cornices and multiform niches, a unique and personal representation of life hewn from lime and stone. Conjunto arqueolgico Hornos Pnicos de Torre Alta

La privilegiada situacin geogrfica de La Isla origin la explotacin de los recursos marinos con los que se elaboraban salsas (garum) y conservas. Esta industria requiri de la fabricacin de envases para su almacenamiento y transporte, las nforas. De las numerosas alfareras de poca fenicia y pnica, se exponen en este conjunto dos grupos de origen bien diferenciado: los hornos cermicos del Sector III de Camposoto (s. VI a.C.), que fueron trasladados desde su emplazamiento original, y el taller alfarero tardo pnico de Torre Alta (s.III. A.C.).

Punic ovens of torre Alta Archeological Site

The unique geographical location of the island led to the exploitation of the marine resources, from which sauces (garum) and preserves were produces. With the industry came the need for packaging for storing and transporting the produce. Of the many potters of the Phoenician and punic time, there are two distinct origins: the ceramic ovens of Sector III of Camposoto (6th Century B.C.) that were moved from their original location; and the tardopunic pottery of Torre Alta (3rd Century B.C.).

Museo histrico

Ubicado en un edificio del s. XVIII con los rasgos tpicos de la arquitectura neoclsica islea. Con un patio central destinado a exposiciones temporales y actos culturales, presenta cinco salas entorno a l. Las muestras geolgicas, materiales prehistricos y el Templo de Melkart dan paso a los restos de las industrias alfareras de Gadir y Gades. La arqueologa medieval y moderna islea completan la exposicin permanente. La primera planta del edificio se destina salas exposiciones temporales, zona de reserva y sala de audiovisuales.

Regional history museum

The museum is located in an 18th Century building of neoclassical architectural tendencies. Within the building is a central patio used for temporary expositions and cultural acts, surrounded by five rooms which house permanent collections. The geological specimens, prehistoric materials and the Melkart Temple lead to the remains of the pottery industry of Gadir and Gades. Medieval and modern island archeology completes the exposition. The first floor of the building is also reserved for temporary exhibitions, reservation and the audio visual suite.

Situated in the military district of San Carlos, it is devoted to naval topics related to the Maritime Area of the Straits of Gibraltar. In addition, some rooms are devoted to periodic exhibitions, the purpose of which is to promote specific topics of naval cultural interest.

Interpretation centre of the parliamentary system

Next to the Royal Theatre Las Cortes, discloses the historical events that took place in our town (The Island of Len) between 1810 and 1811 and that facilitated the birth of the Parliamentary System in Spain. This centre has four argument lines: The Island of Len and Cdiz, Freedom and National Conscience, Constitutionalism and Parliamentarism and Democracy. This Interpretation Centre is equipped with different resources and interactive technology that invite to participate in order to publicizing the advantages and complexities of the different parliamentary systems.

Molino de Mareas El Zaporito

Su nombre le viene del cao donde se encuentra ubicado. Un molino de mareas fue un ingenio tecnolgico de una enorme importancia en la economa de la Baha de Cdiz. Estos molinos aprovechaban la fuerza de las mareas, como fuente de energa inagotable, para hacer girar las piedras y realizar la molienda, normalmente de trigo, aunque tambin molan otros cereales.

Zaporito Tide Mill

Its name comes from the sea pipe where it is located. A tide Mill was a technological machine with a big importance in the economy of the Bay of Cdiz. These mills took advantage of tidal power as an inexhaustible source of energy to turn the grinding stones and perform, usually wheat, but also grinding other cereals.

Arsenal de La Carraca

El Arsenal de la Carraca, primer arsenal ilustrado espaol, debe su origen a la dinasta de los Borbones, a quienes se les hace necesario crear un lugar en la Baha para construir y reparar la real flota. Conserva parte de su configuracin urbanstica original, sus edificios principales y diques primitivos.

Carraca Dockyards

The Carraca Dockyards, the first enlightened Spanish dockyard, owes its origins to the Borbons, for whom it was necessary to create an area in the bay in which to build and repair the royal fleet. Some of the original layout remains, such as the main buildings and the primitive dykes.

Ayuntamiento

Edificio de fachada realmente notable, cuenta con un gran vestbulo con escaleras de mrmol de estilo Isabelino y fue proyectado por el arquitecto Torcuato Cayn. En su interior alberga la Biblioteca de Investigacin Lobo que posee ms de 6.000 piezas entre obras y volmenes de temas relacionados con lo militar, medicina, derecho, novelas y documentos histricos desde el siglo XVI. Actualmente se encuentra en proceso de restauracin.

Town Hall

Dating from 1774, the Town Hall boasts an impressive facade, and is the work of the architect Torcuato Cayn. Inside it houses the Almirante Lobo Research Library, containing more than 6,000 books covering military topics, medicine, the law and novels, as well as other historical documents from the 18th century. Currently under restoration.

Castillo de San Romualdo

Sus orgenes se remontan al menos al s. XIII, recientemente se ha descubierto la existencia de un foso defensivo perimetral.

Est incluido en la lnea de fortificaciones medievales gaditanas de la costa atlntica junto con los Castillos de Luna en Rota, San Marcos en El Puerto de Santa Mara y Castillo de la Villa en Cdiz. Fue declarado en 1931 como Monumento Histrico y actualmente se encuentra en proceso de restauracin.

San Romualdo Castle

The origins of the castle date back to at least the 13th Century. Recently a defensive moat has been discovered around the perimeter. The castle forms part of the line of medieval fortifications of Cdiz alongside the Castillo de Luna (Moon Castle) in Rota, San Marcos Castle in El Puerto and the Cadiz Town Castle. It was declared a historic monument in 1931 and its currently undergoing restoration.

Sancti Petri Castle

Where the channel of the same name meets the sea, and only a short distance from the coast, is the Island of Sancti Petri, where the famous temple of Melkart Hercules of Phoenician origins was to be found in ancient times. On the remains of the temple, the current fortress was raised in the 17th Century. The location and natural beauty of the island make it well worth a visit by boat or by kayak (the only way to reach it).

Edificio construido a finales del siglo XVIII en estilo neoclsico. Una gloriosa efemride est ntimamente ligada con la Iglesia Mayor: El Juramento efectuado por los Diputados de Las Cortes Generales y Extraordinarias el 24 de septiembre de 1810.

This is the oldest religious building in the city, dating from 1733. It is the centre for worship of the Virgin Carmen, Patron Saint of the City and of Seamen. Some sessions of the Cadiz Parliament took place here and it was here that the Town was granted the name of San Fernando and the title of City.

Real Instituto y Observatorio de La Armada de San Fernando

Como dato curioso, es aqu donde se establece la hora oficial de Espaa, siendo uno de los centros cientficos ms importante del mundo. De entre sus campos de investigacin cabe destacar la Seccin Hora que consta de una batera de relojes atmicos, los cuales desde su instalacin en 1973, establecen y mantienen la Escala de Tiempo Universal Coordinado (U.T.C.R.O.A.). Tambin es interesante mencionar la seccin de Geofsica que desde 1879 funciona ininterrumpidamente. Este centro es el primer observatorio geomagntico de Espaa. Dispone tambin de una estacin sismolgica. La Biblioteca del Observatorio est compuesta por ms de 25.000 volmenes y en su inventario consta de tres ejemplares incunables.

San Fernando Royal Naval Institute and Observatory

Founded in 1753 by Jorge Juan, it is the centre for official Spanish Timekeeping and one of the most important scientific centres in the world. Among its different research areas the Timekeeping Section is of particular interest, containing as it does a battery of atomic clocks which, since their installation in 1973, have established and maintained timekeeping in accordance with the Coordinated

Panten de Los Marinos Ilustres

Su construccin se inici en 1786 y fue concebido como la Iglesia Parroquial del nuevo ncleo de la poblacin castrense de San Carlos. Lo ms significativo del interior del Panten son los mausoleos de los Marinos situados en los tramos de las naves laterales. Partiendo de la cpula, cae al centro de la nave central una lmpara votiva en plata de quinientos kilos de peso, esmaltada con los escudos de armas de los Almirantes.

Illustrious Mariners Pantheon

Begun in 1786, it is located in the military district of San Carlos and was originally conceived as the Parish church for this new area of the town. Inaugurated in 1870, it was initially left open to the sky, but, in 1948, it was roofed over. Of particular interest, situated in the interior, lateral aisles of the pantheon, are the tombs of famous mariners, including Gravina, lava, Valds, etc.

Universal Time Scale (U.T.C. R.O.A.). The Geophysics department, which has functioned continuously since 1879, is also worthy of mention. In addition, the Institute is a seismological station and the most important geomagnetic observatory in Spain. The Observatory Library comprises more than 25,000 books, including three incunabula dating from the 15th century.

Real Teatro de las Cortes

El inters histrico de este edificio supera su valor artstico. Se inaugur en 1804 celebrndose en septiembre de 1810 Las Cortes Generales y Extraordinarias que dieron lugar a nuestra primera Constitucin. Fue declarado Monumento Histrico en el ao 1935.

Las Cortes Royal Theatre

This is a building of more historical than architectural interest. It was inaugurated in 1804 and from September 1810 to February 1811, it was the seat of the General and Extraordinary Parliament, whose celebrated members drafted the first Spanish Constitution. It was declared a Historical Monument in 1935.

Sitio Histrico Puente Suazo y Fortificaciones Anejas

Conjunto defensivo y naval que protega la entrada por tierra a la Isla y Cdiz. El puente, de origen romano, debe su configuracin actual a la poca renacentista, momento a partir del cual, empieza a fortificarse con caballeros y bateras. Mantiene restos del carenero que dio origen al Arsenal de la Carraca.

Naval and defensive installations which protected the entrance via land onto the island and into Cdiz. The Roman origin bridge owes its current design to the renaissance period, during which time it was built up with knights and batteries. Some remains of the careen from the Carraca Dockyards are still to be found here.

A lo largo de la historia ha ido evolucionando hasta el da de hoy, en que se ha convertido en un referente para toda la Baha y es foco de atraccin turstica de primer orden, reflejo de una manifestacin popular que tiene muy arraigadas sus costumbres y sentimientos. Entre los diversos actos que se celebran a lo largo de los das de feria, cabe destacar: la procesin martima de la imagen de la Virgen del Carmen desde el muelle de Gallineras hasta el recinto ferial.

THE CARMEN AND SALT FAIR JulyThis local holiday, declared of Tourist interest in Andalusia, is celebrated around July 16th, the feast day of the Virgin of Carmen, patron saint of San Fernando and the Navy.

Throughout history the event has continuously evolved, and today it has become a benchmark for the entire Cadiz Bay. It has developed into a very highly esteemed tourist attraction, reflecting a popular event that has deeprooted customs and emotions. Among the various events being held over the course of the fair, the maritime procession of the image of the Virgin of Carmen from the Gallineras Pier to the fairgrounds in especially noteworthy.

FIESTA DE LAS CORTES24 de septiembreHace ya ms de 200 aos del histrico momento en el que tras la invasin de nuestro Pas por las tropas napolenicas, nuestra ciudad, entonces llamada Villa de la Real Isla de Len, se convirti en sede de las Primeras Cortes Generales y Extraordinarias que tiempo ms tarde daran lugar a la nuestra Primera Constitucin. La produccin legislativa de las Cortes fue excepcional, pues los decretos de Libertad de Imprenta, Igualdad de los espaoles de Amrica y de la Pennsula, la Soberana Nacional fueron el origen de las libertades del Parlamentarismo y de la democracia moderna y fundamento en el proceso emancipador de Latinoamrica.

El 24 de septiembre es una Fiesta Local repleta de actividades atractivas, tanto para el ciudadano de San Fernando,

se sucedieron en la Villa de Real Isla de Len por la libertad y el nacimiento de la Primera Constitucin Espaola.

LAS CORTES FESTIVITY24th SeptemberFor over two hundred years of the historical moment in which, after the invasion of our Country by the Napoleonic troops, our city known at that time as the Villa de la Real Isla de Len became the headquarters of the First Extraordinary and General Courts, that would later become the birthplace of our first Constitution. The legislative output of the Courts was outstanding, with decrees concerning freedom of the press, equality between LatinAmerican and Iberian Spanish citizens, National Sovereignty, etc. all serving as the basis for freedom, democracy in the process of the emancipation of Latin America. September 24th is a local festival packed with activities appealing to both the San Fernando residents and visitors alike: gourmet tastings, musical performances, exhibitions, vintage parades, historical representations, and endless relevant activities to commemorate the historic events that occurred in the Villa de la Isla de Len Island, heralding freedom and the birth of the first Spanish Constitution.

Parque Natural de la Baha de Cdiz Este Parque Natural es una de las principales zonas hmedas del sur de Europa. Con sus 10.000 has. comprende un verdadero laberinto de dunas, caos, marismas y playas. Su situacin, entre el vecino Parque Nacional de Doana y el Estrecho de Gibraltar, le convierte en una pieza importantsima del sistema migratorio de multitud de aves acuticas, catalogndose su enclave de importancia internacional para stas. En los caos buscan refugio, adems de las aves, numerosas especies de peces, moluscos y crustceos. Entre su vegetacin natural, se encuentra la sapina, utilizada por los salineros para el asado del pescado de estero, confirindole a ste un sabor inigualable.

Hay trazados una serie de senderos a travs de las marismas, que le llevarn por parajes de extraordinaria belleza paisajstica: Sendero del Ro Arillo, Salina Dolores, Punta del Boquern y Sendero del Carrascn: en estos senderos

es particularmente significativa la observacin de aves, el color cambiante de sus aguas y la sabia distribucin de los esteros que permite el calentamiento de aquellas, y la preevaporacin que termina en los tajos salineros:

Bay Of Cadiz Nature ReserveThis Nature Reserve is one of the principal wetland areas in southern Europe. Covering 10,000hectares, it comprises an authentic labyrinth of dunes, water channels, swampland and beaches. Its location, between the neighbouring Doana National Park and the Straits of Gibraltar, means that it is a fundamental part of the migratory system of a multitude of seabirds, and indeed, it is classified as of international importance in this respect. In the channels, not only birds seek refuge, but also countless varieties of fish, molluscs and crustaceans. Its varied natural vegetation includes salicornia, used by the salters to roast the fish from the fish farms, giving it a totally unique flavour.

There is a whole network of trails crisscrossing the marshland and leading to spots of outstanding natural beauty: the Rio Arillo Trail, Dolores Salt mine trail, Punta de Boquern Trail and the Carrascon Trail. Birdspotting is a particularly favourite pastime along these trails. The everchanging colour of the various expanses of water is breathtaking and it is easy to appreciate the astute distribution of the fish farm channels, which allow the water to heat up and for some preevaporation to take place, before some is finally channelled off into the salt flats proper, to evaporate entirely.

A uno de los dos lados, la isla donde algunos sitan el antiguo templo de HrculesMelkart y al otro lado, el pueblo de Sancti Petri.Al final del camino encontramos la Batera de Urrutia, que fue construida en el siglo XVIII para defender la entrada al Cao de Sancti Petri. Su rendicin, en 1823, favoreci la entrada de los Cien Mil Hijos de San Luis a San Fernando y la cada de su cantn independiente. No lejos de all encontramos la Punta de Boquern, declarado Monumento Natural en el ao 2003.

Starting from the last car park available on the beach road at Playa del Castillo (Castillo Beach), this nature trail winds its way gently among the dunes, with

the sounds and sights of the sea ever present as you stroll along its length. Eventually, the trail reaches the mouth of the Sancti Petri Canal. At this point, the Island of Sancti Petri, the legendary site of the Temple of HerculesMelkart, is visible on one side of the river and the town of Sancti Petri is just a short distance away on the other.

At the end of the walkway, we come to the Urrutia battery, which was built in the 18th Century to defend the entrance to the island along the Sancti Petri canal. Its surrender in 1823 helped the one hundred thousand sons of San Luis gain entrance to San Fernando and the fall of the independent cantonment. Not far from here, we find the Punta de Boquern declared as a national monument in 2003.

Castle Beach

This undeveloped beach is another of the attractions of San Fernando and its virgin sands form part of the Bay of Cadiz Nature Reserve. Camposoto Beach, only 4 kilometres from the centre of the city, stretches some 5 kilometres along the Atlantic coast. In the summer months, some public services are provided, including public conveniences and beach bar /restaurants, among others. Thanks to the cleanliness of the water and its fine golden sand, this beach has twice been awarded the Blue Flag for Clean Beaches in Europe. It is a beach with something for everyone, offering not only a pleasant, family environment in the area close to the public services, but also more remote, peaceful areas, where just the breeze and the sea serve as companions.

San Fernando lies at the very heart of the Bay of Cadiz and is an ideal location from which to explore, not only the other local towns and points of interest

around the bay, but also a little further afield, including, for example, the four wellknown tourist trails, or routes, which crisscross the province of Cadiz: the Route of the Little White Towns, the Wine Route, the Coastal Route and the Route of the Fighting Bull.

Ruta de los Pueblos Blancos

Recorre en su itinerario las poblaciones de la sierra. Podemos admirar una arquitectura tpica de casas encaladas, con un genuino trazado de sus calles, castillos e iglesias medievales. El elemento natural ms importante de esta

Ruta es el Parque Natural de Grazalema, dentro del cual est el bosque de Pinsapos, especie de abeto nico en la Europa Occidental. La ruta comienza en Arcos de la Frontera, El Pueblo ms bonito de Europa, segn Azorn. A pocos kilmetros se encuentra Grazalema, Ubrique, Setenil, Olvera, y as hasta 19 municipios que recogen la denominacin de Pueblos Blancos.

The Route Of The Little White Towns

This route meanders through the various towns scattered across the rugged mountain sierra. Stop and admire the typical whitewashed, stone houses lining the narrow streets which are so characteristic of this region, and take time out to visit the picturesque medieval castles and churches. Grazalema Nature Reserve is a jewel to be treasured on this route and is populated predominantly by the Pinsapos pine tree, which is exclusive to this part of western Europe. The route of the Little White Towns begins in Arcos, The most beautiful town in Europe, according to Azorn. A few short kilometres away is Grazalema, then Ubrique, Setenil, Olvera . and a further 19 unspoilt white towns just waiting to be discovered along the way.

Ruta del Toro

Partiendo desde Jerez, hacia Arcos de la Frontera y finalizando en los Barrios y Tarifa, en el campo de Gibraltar. La peculiaridad de esta ruta, adems de su tipismo y monumentalidad artstica, son las diversas ganaderas y toros de lidia, donde pueden admirarse el toro bravo en su medio natural.

The route of the fighting bull

Starting in Jerez and ending in the flat lands surrounding Gibraltar, this route passes through Arcos de la Frontera, Los Barrios and Tarifa. Following the route takes the visitor to the very roots of this very typical and highly skilled art. Witness this very aristocratic farming region with its rolling pastures and meadows, and watch the bulls themselves, roaming free in the fields of the cattle farms.

Posiblemente Cdiz sea la provincia espaola donde la tradicin ecuestre se manifiesta con mayor fuerza. De hecho, Jerez de la Frontera podra erigirse como capital espaola del caballo debido a las numerosas ganaderas y yeguadas que se afanan en la crianza y seleccin equina, as como la diversas expresiones festivas que tienen al caballo como protagonista absoluto como es el caso de su conocida Feria del Caballo.

The Route Of The Horse

Cdiz is probably the Spanish province where the equestrian tradition can most clearly be seen. In fact, Jerez de la Frontera was able to emerge as the Spanish capital of horse breeding due to the labours of the large number of stock farms and studs in breeding and selecting horses, as well to the many different festivals whose main protagonist is the horse as the famous Jerez Horse Fair.

Ruta Americana

Las huellas de la gran aventura americana se pueden hallar en diversas localidades de la provincia gaditana. Sanlcar de Barrameda y el Puerto de Santa Mara ofrecen al visitante una serie de palacios, fortalezas, iglesias y torres que vieron su nacimiento con el comienzo de los viajes ultramar realizados por Coln, y que tuvieron en los puertos de estas poblaciones sus puntos de origen y fin.

Pero sin lugar a dudas, la propia capital gaditana es la ciudad que mejor refleja esta influencia americana. Un paseo por el frente martimo de Cdiz, desde la Caleta al Campo del Sur, evocar al visitante la imagen del malecn de la Habana y es que son muchas las similitudes que guarda con las ciudades hispanoamericanas, fruto del constante flujo que hubo entre Cdiz y el Nuevo Mundo.

The American Route

With the Discovery of America, the Bay of Cdiz became the recipient of riches arriving from the New World and important protagonists were the cities of Sanlucar and El Puerto de Santa Maria because of their ports linked to trade routes. The proliferation of important monuments like palaces, manor houses, fortress, churches and lookout tower, reflects the economic prosperity in this period which began with Columbuss expeditions to the New World. These trails are particularly noteworthy in Cadiz and reflect the vast influence of the Americas adventure.

A stroll along the Cadiz seafront from La Caleta to the Campo del Sur will remind the visitor of the image of the avenue The Malecon in Havana, as there are many similarities between Cadiz and Latin American cities thanks to the constant flow of people travelling between Cadiz and the New World.

Para descubrir el flamenco en San Fernando, por entonces Isla de Len, hemos de retroceder slo hasta poco antes de que los franceses llegaran a nuestros dominios en 1809. En esta fecha nace Juan de Dios, primer cantaor isleo del que tenemos noticias que alternaba con el Planeta y el Fillo en 1831. Estamos seguros que Juan de Dios debi tener predecesores en la Isla.

Refirindonos a los cantes sucede algo similar. Los informes, en la Isla, comienzan a tener fundamento a partir de Mara Fernndez, conocida por Mara borrico (1830). Esta dinasta gitana en la que sobresalieron cantando la Borrico, el Viejo de la Isla y la Bizca, adquiri fama creando e interpretando seguiriyas. A partir de aqu con esta simiente meldica que sembraron los Fernndez en la Isla, no es de extraar que la seguiriya creciera en el ansia interpretativa de una legin de cantaores locales que llegaran despus. Fue el de esta familia un estilo de cante genuino que mantena toda su fuerza expresiva en breves espacios de intervencin. A esta modalidad de seguiriya se le denominaba cante corto de la isla.

There is a strong tradition of flamenco music in San Fernando which may easily be traced back to the years leading up to the Napoleonicled invasion of Spain by France. At that time, San Fernando was known as the Isla de Len (Island of Leon) and it is known that the first isleo flamenco singer, Juan de Dios, was born in the town in 1809. Later, in 1831, he would perform with other wellknown flamenco artists, including el Planeta and el Fillo. Although no records exist to support the presumption, there seems little doubt that the deeplyrooted flamenco tradition in San Fernando goes back much further.

The history of the style of flamenco singing in San Fernando is similarly welldocumented from roughly the same time (the early 1800s). The gypsysinger, Mara Fernndez, known as Mara Borrico (1830), was the first in a family dynasty of outstanding flamenco performers, including el Borrico, el Viejo de la Isla and la Bizca, whose reputation for singing seguiriyas was renowned. Their highly distinctive renditions spawned many and varying interpretations from numerous other local flamenco singers in subsequent generations. The

Por otro lado, si hablamos del flamenco en nuestros das, cabe resaltar la figura del recientemente fallecido Jos Llerena Ramos Chato de la Isla. Este carismtico cantaor, gran seguidor de Manolo Caracol, comenz a cantar a muy temprana edad en los tranvas que hacan el trayecto de San Fernando a Cdiz.

A lo largo de su carrera profesional, demostr su arte en un sinfn de tablaos, aunque era en las reuniones y fiestas privadas donde ms a gusto se senta. Dicen de l que paladeaba el cante, no hay ms que escuchar los diversos estilos de fandangos, su cante por soleares, alegras, seguiriyas, tientos y tangos.

En otra lnea completamente diferente ya cercando el flamenco alos jvenes, destacamos la figura de Nia Pastori. Contaba apenas con con ocho aos de edad cuando fue descubierta y alentada por el gran Camarn de la Isla, para que desarrollara sus admirabels dotes para la msica flamenca.

Fue asi, que siendo apenas una adolescente, public su primer disco en 1996, gracias al apoyo incondicional de artistas de la talla de Alejandro Sanz y Paco Ortega. Aunque fue en su lbum No hay quinto malo (2004) la obra que marca un antes y un despus en su msica. Desde sus inicios hasta ahora, ha cosechado grandes xitos dentro del panorama musical espaol, abriendo una nueva va para el flamenco con un plateamiento fresco y renovador.

Dentro del baile flamenco, mereche especial antecin la islea Sara Baras, quin pese a su juventud ha alcanzado fama internacional llevando su arte por todos los rincones del mundo. Comienza sus estudios artsticos en la escuela de baile de su madre, Concha Baras, formando parte al mismo tiempo del grupo Los Nios de la Tertulia Flamenca, con el que recorre los festivales flamencos en Andalcua. En 1998 debut con su propia compaa, con un espectculo llamado sensaciones, un recorrido por los diferentes palos del flamenco. Tras l, se van sucediendo otros como Sueos, Juana la Loca consiguiendo con todos ellos un gran xito tanto de pblico como por parte de la crtica.

Fernandez family were famed for the purity of their style of singing, which retained the fullest force of its expression even in the shortest songs. This type of seguiriya was referred to as cante corto de la isla (shortstyle flamencosinging from la Isla).

Another traditional song of our region was the Salinera, which has disappeared from the islands flamenco heritage. On the other hand, if we talk of todays flamenco, the recently deceased figure of Chato de la Isla, Jos Llerena Ra

mos comes immediately to mind. This charismatic singer, a huge fan of Manolo Caracol, began singing at a very early age on the trams that covered the journey between San Fernando and Cdiz.

Over the course of his career he demonstrated his skills at any number of Tablaos concerts. However, he was really most at home in intimate gatherings and private parties. They say that he relished in the song, and you only have to listen to the many styles of fandangos, soleares, alegrias, seguiriyas,

tientos or tangos to appreciate why this is true.

On a completely different note, Nia Pastori is renowned for bringing flamenco to the youth. She was barely eight years of age when she was spotted by the great Camarn de la Isla, and encourage to develop her admirable talent for flamenco music. And so it was that, still barely an adolescent, she launched her first disc in 1996, thanks to the unconditional support she received from Alejandro Sanz and Paco Ortega

amongst others. Her album No hay quinto malo! (2004) marks the defining point of the before and after of her musical style. From the very beginning she has livened up the Spanish music scene with hit after hit, and in doing so, has created a new way for a fresh and rejuvenated flamenco to be heard.

Within flamenco dancing, the islander Sara Baras is especially noteworthy. In spite of her youth, she has achieved international fame, taking her arte all over the world. She Began her studies in her mothers school (Concha Baras), whist forming part of the group Los Nios de la Terulia Flamenca, travelling around the festivals of Andalusia. In 1998 she made her debut with her own company in a show called Sensations, a journey through the different styles of flamenco. Camarn de La Isla

La infancia de CAMARON transcurri en la fragua de su padre, primero en la calle Orlando en la zona de las Callejuelas, donde viva y luego en la calle Amargura, cerca de la Plaza de Toros.

Jos vino al mundo en la habitacin de su casa, un 5 de diciembre de 1950, una casa pequea y compartida con otras familias en el nmero 29 de la calle El Carmen. CAMARN tuvo una infancia muy corta. A los 8 aos le escuchan cantar en la Venta de Vargas y en 1962, con apenas 12 aos, recibi el primer premio de su vida ganando el concurso flamenco del festival de Montilla. A partir de entonces empez a frecuentar la Venta de Vargas...

CAMARN ha sido siempre devoto del Nazareno, cuya imagen se venera en la Iglesia Mayor.

Un trgico mircoles 1 de Julio de 1992, Camarn dejaba de existir y siguiendo sus deseos fue enterrado en San Fernando donde tiene un Mausoleo. En la Pea de su nombre se puede disfruta de un gran nmero de fotos, recuerdos y objetos de este Duende del Flamenco.

El flamenclogo, Flix Grande, escribi tras su muerte: El arte de Camarn era un aullido de la filosofa, monumento a la condicin humana, un obelisco a la derrota. Pero tambin fue un combate extraordinariamente valiente por arrancarle a la fatalidad instantes de eternidad y belleza. Cada uno de sus cantes es una breve eternidad, cada uno de sus cantes es un suspiro en el que estamos fuera de tiempo, en el palacio donde el candor, inocencia y entusiasmo nos untan pomada en las heridas de nuestro corazn; un suspiro durante el cual conocemos a la felicidad y nos despedimos de ella.

The Trail Of Camaron de La IslaCAMARON spent his childhood in and around his fathers iron smithy, originally in the calle Orlando in the area of las Callejuelas, where he lived and later on in the calle Amargura, near to the Bull Ring.

Jos was born at home, on the 5th December 1950, in a humble dwelling which his family shared with other relatives, at number 29, El Carmen Street. His childhood was very short. When he was only 8 years old he was heard to perform in the Venta de Vargas and in 1962, when he was barely 12 years old, he received his first prize in the Montilla Festival flamenco competition. Thereafter, he began to sing regularly at the Venta de Vargas

CAMARON was a devotee of Jesus the Nazarene, whose image is worshipped in the Iglesia Mayor (San Fernandos principal church).

Tragically, he died on the 1st July 1992 and was buried in San Fernando, where a Mausoleum was constructed in his honour.

After his death, the expert in flamenco art and culture, Flix Grande, wrote: The art of Camarn was a philosophical lament, a monument to the human condition, an obelisk to defeat. But it was also an extraordinarily courageous struggle to capture just a few, fleeting moments of eternity and beauty from what is our inevitable fate. Each one of his songs represents the briefest of eternities, each of them is a sigh which transports us outside time itself, to a palace where candour, innocence and enthusiasm is a balm which is soothed on the wounds of our bleeding hearts; each song is but the breath of a moment, in which we both experience real happiness and yet must leave it behind.

Casi toda la gastronoma propia de esta zona gira en torno al pescado y al marisco, tanto por estar rodeados de mar como por los esteros, centro de produccin de una importante variedad de especies de pescados: lenguados, lisas, zapatillas, mojarras, anguilas, doradas, etc. Junto a estos esteros, y en los caos, se marisquean las coquinas, almejas, camarones, cangrejos, bocas y caaillas. Basndonos en esta relacin, enunciaremos una serie de recetas tpicas de la Isla, aunque con algunas variantes tanto en los ingredientes como en los condimentos.

And so, with such a wide selections to choose from, we present below a series of typical recipes from the island, although with a few variations in the ingredients and condiments.

Bienmesabe

Ingredientes: Cazn, vinagre (preferiblemente de yema), cominos, ajos, sal, harina y aceite de oliva.

Preparacin: Se prepara el adobo con el vinagre, los ajos, los cominos y la sal, majndolo todo en un mortero y se aade a las rodajas de cazn hasta cubrirlas. Se deja macerar al menos tres o cuatro horas. Luego se escurren bien y se envuelven en harina de trigo, a continuacin se fren en aceite abundante y preferiblemente caliente.

Ingredients:Dogfish, vinegar, cumin seeds, garlic cloves, salt, flour, olive oil.

Preparation:The dressing is prepared with the vinegar, garlic cloves, cumin and salt, crushing them all in a mortar and the strips of dogfish are added until they are covered. Let the mixture marinade for at least three or four hours. Then drain well and roll the dogfish in the flour. Finally, fry the fish in preheated oil.

Caballas con tomate

Ingredientes: Caballas, fideos gordos, tomate, pimiento, sal, aceite y agua.

Preparacin: Se fren los pimientos y los tomates, a continuacin en una cazuela se ponen los tomates, sal y agua, cuando estn hirviendo se echan los fideos. Una vez que estn casi hechos, los fideos se le aaden las caballas.

Ingredients:Mackerel, fat minestrone, tomato, peper, salt, oil and water.

Preparation:The peppers and tomato are first fried. Then add the tomatoes, salt and water into a deep pot. Once this is boiling, add the minestrone. Once the minestrone is almost cooked, the mackerel is finally added.

Caballa con Piriaca Ingredientes: Caballas, tomate, cebolla, pimiento verde, aceite de oliva virgen, vinagre y sal.

Preparacin: Cortar a trozos pequeos el tomate, la cebolla, el pimiento y aderezarlo todo con un buen chorro de aceite de oliva virgen, vinagre y sal. Asar la caballa limpia y entera y servirla en un plato junto a el preparado anterior.

Ingredients: Mackerel, tomato, onion, pepper, oil and salt.

Preparation: Piriaca: Cut tomato, onion and pepper into small pieces and dress it with oil, vinegar and salt. Grill the clean and whole mackerel and serve it on a plate with the piriaca.

Tortillitas de Camarones

Ingredientes:Camarones, harina de garbanzo, harina de trigo, perejil, cebolla, aceite, agua (de cocer los camarones)

Preparacin:Se hace una masa con los camarones cocidos, se mezclan las dos clases de harina junto al perejil y la cebolla. Luego se toma como medida una cuchara, se llena de esta pasta y se va echando en una sartn con aceite muy caliente para ir frindola.

Ingredients:Camarones (small shrimp), chickpea flour, wheat flour, parsley, onion, oil, water (to cook the shrimp).

Preparation:Make a mass of the cooked shrimp. Mix with the two types of flour, along with the parsley and onins. Then, take a tablespoon of the mass and flatten it out before dropping into a preheated deep fat fryer.

En el Corazn de San Fernando y de la Calle Real, se ubica el Centro de Congresos y Exposiciones Cortes de la Real Isla de Len.

En un edificio diseado en la poca de los 40 por Antonio Snchez Estvez, considerado como uno de los principales arquitectos racionalistas de Andaluca.

Estas instalaciones estn dotadas de medios audiovisuales, informticos, iluminacin, proyeccin y de climatizacin a la altura de los requerimientos tecnolgicos actuales. Cuenta adems con las siguientes instalaciones:

- Auditorio Lzaro Dou para 266 personas- Sala Parlamento con capacidad para 75

personas- Sala Bicentenario 2010 para 75 personas- Sala Parlamento Duque de Alburquerque con
