Two middle schools selected as sites SanAntonioISDandUniversityHealthSystem(UHS)willestablishtwoschool-basedhealthclinicsthisschoolyear. ThefirstclinicistoopenonthegroundsofTafollaMiddleSchoolinthefall,servingstudentsandcampusstafffromtheSAISDschoolsintheWestSideLanierHighSchoolfeeder. Asecondclinicistargetedtoopenin

January2020attheDavisMiddleSchoolcampus,toserveEastSideSamHoustonHighSchoolfeederschools.Goingforward,bothschool-basedclinicswillgraduallyexpandservicestoincludeasmanyDistrictstudentsandstaffascapacitypermits.

“Familiesaretellinguseaseofaccessandcostarethetwomajorreasonsthattheydon’taccesshealthcare,andthesetwocenterswillhelpminimizethosebarriers,”saidMariaTorres,SAISD’sdirectorofhealthcareadministrationandMedicaidprograms. StudentscanobtainanappointmentatoneofthenewUHScentersbyvisiting

theirschoolnurse.Ifthenurseassessesthatthestudentshouldbeseenbyamedicalprovider,thenursewillhavetheoptiontocontacttheclinicthatservestheircampusanddependingonparentavailability,getthesickchildintoseeaproviderthatsameday. Parentsalsowillbeabletocallintotheclinicstoscheduleappointmentsfor

theirchildren,andemployeeswillbeabletocalltoscheduleappointmentsforthemselves. Privateinsurance,CHIP,Medicaid,andcashpaymentarrangementsareaccepted.ThecenterstaffalsocanhelppatientsmakeanaccountwithBexarCounty’sCareLinkfinancialassistanceprogram.

Readingisthefoundationforlearning,andtherefore,themostcrucialacademicskill.Oncechildrenlearntoread,thereisnolimittowheretheireducationwilltakethem. InSAISD,IamproudtosaythatweareseeingstrongacademicsacrosstheDistrict–inreading,andalsoacrossallsubjectareas–basedonearlySTAARresults.Wealsoareseeingsignificantgrowthandimprovementinalmostallperformancelevelson

highschoolEndofCourse(EOC)exams. Togettothispoint,overthepastfouryears,wehaveinvestedinstrongacademicprogrammingatalllevels,andexpandingsuchareasasfineartsprogramming,duallanguagecampuses,AdvancedPlacementanddualcreditopportunities. Wefindthatnomatterhowhighweraisethebar,thestudentskeepexceedingthatbar. Theresultsweareseeing

demonstratethegreatworkteachersaredoingtohelpourstudentsreachtheirpotential,andIappreciateoureducators’dedication

andcommitmenttothechildreninourDistrict.Notonlyduringtheschoolyear,butalsothroughoutthesummerduringourenrichmentcamps. Ourgoalistoprovideallchildrenahigh-qualityeducationfromthemomenttheystepfootononeofourcampusestothedaytheycrossthestagewiththeirdiplomainhand.Ibelieveweaccomplishthiseachandeveryday. Thisyear,amongourClassof2019graduates,94percentappliedtocollege,earningalmost$85millioninscholarships.Iwashonoredtostandonstageateverygraduationceremonyandshakethehandsofourstudents. RENOVATIONS UNDERWAY AT AREA SCHOOLSBRACKENRIDGE HS

Renovations at 13 schools are in their construction phase under SAISD’s $450 million bond. The funding is replacing infrastructure systems that, in most cases, are more than 40 years old and is updating the schools to 21st–century learning environments. The projects include seven high schools, three middle schools, and three elementary/academies. Visit bond.saisd.net.

The clinics will be operated in cooperation with University Health System and will provide services including routine doctor care, physicals and immunizations. The Baptist Health Foundation, in collaboration with the SAISD Foundation, also is contributing $40,000 in resources.

TheSanAntonioISDBoardofTrustees,comprisedofsevenDistrictresidents,istheschoolsystem’spolicy-makingbody.Eachtrusteerepresentsoneofsevensingle-memberdistrictsandiselectedbyvotersofthatdistrict.Single-memberdistrictswereimplementedin1986.Trusteesservefour-yearterms.

TheBoard’smajordutiesinclude:AdoptinggoalsandobjectivesfortheDistrict,reviewingandactingonpolicies,adoptinganannualbudgetandsettingthetaxrate,electingschoolpersonnelasrecommendedbythesuperintendent,andreportingtothepublicontheDistrict’sprogress.

Nearly 80 miles of fiber will connect every single SAISD campus InvestmentsintechnologyupgradesarebeingmadeineveryschoolacrosstheDistrict.Morethan$7millioningrantfundingishelpingtheDistricttobuildanewhigh-speedfibernetworkforfastandreliableconnectivity,enablingevenmoreinnovativedigitallearningopportunitiesintheclassroom. UndertheFederalCommunicationsCommittee’s(FCC)E-rateprogram,SAISDreceivedagranttoimplementitsownDistrictWideAreaNetwork(WAN).TheDistrict’sWANwillfacilitatelightning-fastnetworkandinternetspeedsatallSAISDcampusesforthenext10to20years. “Toputthisintoperspective,imaginethattheDistrict’snetworktrafficistravelingdownatwo-lanehighway.Withthisimplementation,we

willnowhavea100-lanehighwaytosupportourinstructionalandbusinessneedsatagreatlyreducedcost,”saidEtienneTousignant,E-ratetechnicalprojectmanageratSAISD. Thecustomfibernetworkhasunlimitedcapacity.Themajorityofthecablebeingplacedwillnotbeusedattheinceptionoftheprocess,butitisavailabletobetappedasneededbasedontheamountofdatabeingcarriedonthenetwork. “Itiswhatwecallscalable,”saidTousignant.“Forinstance,inthenext10years,ifweseeasuddenincreaseinthepopulationofourstudentsoranincreaseinthenumberoffacilitiesormorelikely,thetoolswe’reusingrequireamuchhigherbandwidth,wenowhavetheabilitywiththisnetworktoincreaseourneeds.” Nearly80milesoffiberwillconnecteverysingleSAISDcampustotheDistrict’sWAN.Thenetworkwillworkinconjunctionwiththewirelessinfrastructureonindividualcampuses

build-outshouldtake12-18monthswiththenewnetworkreadyforserviceinthesummerof2020.

Thisfall,SAISDwillprovideparentsanewsystemthatwilltracktheirchildrenastheytaketheschoolbus. Studentsinpre-kindergartenthroughfifthgradewillswipeabadgeastheyenterorleavethebus.ThenewZonarZ-Passsystemwillthensendparentsatextmessagetoletthemknowwhenandwheretheirchildgotonorofftheirschoolbus. Thenewsystemwillhelpensureour

youngestridersgetontherightbusandexitattherightbusstop. TheDistricteventuallywillrollouttheZ-Passprogramtoolderstudents,too. SAISDisthefirstBexarCountyschooldistricttousethenewbussafetymeasures.ThechangesarepartoftheSchoolBusStopArmSafetyProgram,whichwasimplementedthispast year.

$20,000 scholarship, a laptop, and mentors SixSAISDseniorshavebeenselectedtobecomepartoftheMichael&SusanDellFoundation’s2019DellScholarscohort.TravisEarlyCollegeHighSchool’sJudge-AnthonyRios,NayeliArias,ReginaRivas,andZionMinoralongwithYoungWomen’sLeadershipAcademy’sAngelaHernandezandEmilyGarciaareamongthe500studentsfromacrossthenationselectedforthislife-changingopportunity. AsaDellScholar,studentsreceivea$20,000scholarship,alaptop,andaccesstoadvisorswhocanhelpstudentsnavigateandovercomelifebarriers. AccordingtotheDellScholarswebsite,DellScholarsare25percentmorelikelytoearntheirbachelor’sdegreeswithinfourtosixyearsofhighschoolgraduationcomparedtostudentsofsimilarsocioeconomicbackgrounds.Inaddition,whilethecostofcollegerises,onlyhalfofDellScholarsgraduatewithanydebt.Theaveragedebtforthose

whoborrowislessthan$15,000,which isapproximatelyhalfthenationalaverage.

Thebadgesystemcomeswithanappthatprovidesparentsanestimatedtimeofbusarrival.TheDistrictwillusethenewSafeStopApptohelpparentseliminatetheguessworkaroundwhenaschoolbuswillshowup.Althoughbusesrunonasetschedule,weatherandtrafficdelayscanaffecttiming.

No cost to the District InadditiontotheFCCfunding,theDistrictwasapprovedforstatematchingfundsforthespecialconstructionportionoftheproject.Thismeansthat95percentoftheconstructioncostwillbepaidbyE-rateandthestateofTexaswillpickuptheremaining5percent.

The Greehey Family Foundation commits $1.5 million to program

Opportunitiesthatprovidehighschoolstudentswithcollegecoursecredithelpthosestudentsenvisionthemselvesenrolledfull-timeinacollegeoruniversityafterearningtheirhighschooldiploma. Dualcreditenrollsstudentsincollegecourseswhiletheyarestillinhighschool,allowingthemtoearncreditforbothandincreasingtherigoroftheirhighschoolexperience. InanefforttoexpanddualcreditofferingstoawiderrangeofSAISDstudents,TheGreeheyFamilyFoundationhascommitted$1.5millioninsupport

ofdualcreditoverthenextthreeyearsthroughtheSAISDFoundation,whichisapubliccharityservingtheDistrict’sstudentsandteachers.TheGreeheyScholarsProgramwillbeofferedtostudentsstartinginthefallof2019,andaimstohelpapproximately2,000highschoolstudentstakedualcreditcoursesthrough2022. AccordingtoLizOzuna,directorofAdvancedAcademicsandPost-SecondaryInitiatives,herdepartment’svisionforTheGreeheyScholarsProgramisby2022,tomorethandoublethecurrentnumberofhighschoolstudentsinSAISDcomprehensivehighschoolswhograduatewith15-plushoursofdualcredit. Sincetherearenostudentfeesforthesecourses,philanthropicfundsarecriticaltotheexpansionoftheseofferings,

coveringtheDistrict’scosts,includingfeestoAlamoCollegesandUTSA,booksandtransportation. AccordingtoRamonPatiño,asenioratJeffersonHighSchool,whotookdualcreditclassesattheUTSADowntown

Campus,beingabletointeractwithacollegeprofessorhelpedhimrealizewhatheneededtodotobepreparedforcollege.“Dualcreditprogramshavegivenmetheexperienceofwhatarealcollegeclassislike,”hesaid.

More high school students to earn dual credit

InApril,theDistricthelditsfirstExperienceSummerinSAISDevent,afreefamilyresourcefairtoinformfamiliesaboutitsextensivesummerlearningopportunitiesinJuneandJuly. Morethan90full-daysummercampswereheldfortheDistrict’sstudentsoverthesummermonths.Childrenofallageswereengagedinawiderangeoffun,hands-onactivities,learningapproachestheycoulduseinreal-worldcontexts.CamptopicsincludedreadingandmathcombinedwithSTEAM(science,technology,engineering,art,andmathematics),sports,filmmaking,coding,podcasting,andsomuchmore–

atnocosttostudentsandtheirfamilies. ThegoalforSAISD’ssummercampprogramwasthreefold:

• Summer enrichment:Campsdesigned toexplorenewsubjects,strengthen readingandmathskills,anduse technologytoproducecreativework.

• Credit acceleration:Opportunities forstudentstogetaheadbycompleting coursesforcreditduringthesummer.

• Summer bridge:Campsthatoffered anorientationexperiencetoprepare studentforsuccessastheytransitioned toanewgradelevel.

At Longfellow Middle School, LOTC students were introduced to drone technology. Students trained via a flight simulator and learned to code a drone to achieve assigned flight paths.

According to Ramon Patiño, a senior at Jefferson High School, who took dual credit classes at the UTSA Downtown Campus, being able to interact with a college professor helped him realize what he needed to do to be prepared for college.

Fiesta and fitnessMorethan250runnersparticipatedinBeaconHillAcademy’sfirstFiestaRuninApril,includingstaff,studentsandparents.Tostudents’delight,thefiredepartmentwastheretosprayalittlewateronthemastheyranpastthefiretruck.Theschool’sraceprovidedawayforstudentstogetactive,whileraisingmoneyforasoundsystemfortheirP.E.department.

Recycling pays offOnthelastdayofschool,studentsatArnoldElementary

weresurprisedwiththenewsthattheirschoolplacedfirstintheirleagueforthe2018-19PepsiCoRecycleRallychallengeandtheywereawarded$50,000fortheirefforts.Thisisthe

secondyearthatArnoldElementaryhasbeendeclaredawinnerinthenationalcompetition,makingthemback-to-backchamps.FranklinElementarySchoolplacedfifthinthenationinthisyear’sPepsiCoRecyclingChallengeandwasawarded$30,000.

Students conducting biomedical research training this summer FourrisinghighschooljuniorshavebeenselectedtoparticipateintheVoelckerBiomedicalResearchAcademy,atwo-yeareducationalandcollegepreparatoryprogramforlocalhighschoolstudentsatUTHealthSanAntonio. Thissummer,DorianChavezofBrackenridgeHighSchool,ShreyaDheenanofYoungWomen’sLeadershipAcademy,SelenaFloresofTravisEarly

CollegeHighSchoolandJozlynVazquez-SalinasofFoxTechHighSchoolareamongacohortof15SanAntoniostudentsenteringtheprogram.Theywillengageinhands-on,biomedicalresearchtrainingwithUTHealthscientists. Throughoutthe2019-2020schoolyear,thestudentswillcontinuetobenefitfromthementorshipofbiomedicalscientistsandwillbeimmersedinanumberofspecialenrichmentandresearch-orientedactivities. Lastyear,threeSAISDstudentswereacceptedintotheprogramandarenow

enteringafaculty-mentoredresearchphase. ThegoaloftheacademyistodevelopapoolofhighlycompetitivestudentswhosuccessfullypursuefuturecareersinSanAntonio’sbiomedicalcommunity.

Students in grades sixth through ninth to benefit from program Studentswhobegininaduallanguageprogramattheelementarylevelmaynowbeabletocontinuetheirduallanguageeducationwhentheyentermiddleandhighschool.Inthefall,threemoreschoolswillofferduallanguageprograms,increasingthenumberofcampusesofferingitto48andservingmorethan6,000studentsDistrict-wide. WhiletheinitialexpansionofduallanguageprogramsatSAISDoverthepastthreeyearstookplaceprimarilyinthelowergrades,thenewschools

includeLanierHighSchool,EdisonHighSchoolandWhittierMiddleSchool. Thenewcohortsincludeninthgradersatthehighschoollevelandsixth,seventhandeighthgradersatthemiddleschoollevel.ThestudentswillbeofferedoneortwocorecoursessuchasbiologyoralgebrainSpanish,anelectiveinSpanish,andanadvancedSpanishlanguageclass.ThestudentswilltaketherestoftheirrequiredcourseworkinEnglish.
