2 0 1 1 - 2 0 1 2 S p e a k e r S e r i e sMary Lee Lenertz, Vice-President and Program Director, has announced participants in the 2011-2012 Speaker Series. The slate of speakers will provide an exciting selection of genealogical and historical presentations for the membership of the San Angelo Genealogical and Historical Society.

October sees Conrad McClure, historian and re-enactor, presenting “The Real Lonesome Dove.” In this fascinating presentation, McClure shares tales of Charles Goodnight and Oliver Loving who blazed the Goodnight/Loving Trail.

The Society is bringing noted genealogical speaker Richard L. Hooverson to San Angelo in November for a third performance! In a free mini-seminar, Hooverson wil l give two presentations, “Today I’ve Got to Get Organized; Doing It Correctly the First Time,” and “Settlement of the Middle Borders” which covers the opening of the “Middle Border” (OH, IN, IL, MI, WI, MN, IA) and later routes to the South. This meeting will start at 6:00 p.m. and last until about 8:30 p.m.

Following the popular program of last December, the Christmas meeting features a Christmas Party, member speakers, and a Fundraising Event to benefit the Speakers Fund.

In January, professional genealogist Teri Flack presents “Finding Your Ancestors in the Republic of Texas.”

February brings society favorite Suzanne Campbell speaking on “Old Homes of San Angelo.”

Civil War history is featured in March with historian and re-enactor Kenneth Phipps of the Sons of Confederate Veterans presenting “The Bonnie Blue Flag.”

April brings another free mini-seminar featuring husband and wife professional genealogists John and Barbara Wyley. John will present “A Systematic Approach to Evidence;” Barbara’s topic will be “Was Your Mother a Relict? What Do Those Old Words Mean?” This meeting will start at 6:00 p.m. and last until about 8:30 p.m.

In May, John Peirce, PhD, professor of history at ASU, will present a historical topic to be announced.

November, January, and Apri l feature professional genealogy speakers brought to you by the Speakers Fund.

This fascinating speaker series provides something for everyone. Plan to attend each one and bring a friend - the public is welcome to attend.

Share Your Ancestor’s Civil War Story

Rown Downie, Stalkin’ Kin editor, encourages all SAGHS members to write an article for the Stalkin’ Kin. Family articles are not limited to the Concho Valley or even Texas - any location is suitable. Submission deadline for the November issue of Stalkin’ Kin is September 27. Ron has received several articles already, but there’s room for more. As Volume 39 commemorates the 150th anniversary of the Civil War, Ron especially encourages members to write about their civil war ancestors. Possibilities include a brief biography, battles fought by your ancestor, or life on the home front. All submissions must be in either in WordPerfect or Microsoft Word. For more information and format requirements, contact Ron Downie at [email protected] . Send submissions to the same e-mail address.

Ongoing ProjectsSan Angelo Standard-Times Obituary Project - abstracting 1950s obituaries from microfilm of the Standard Times. This project is available for adoption - see Susan Ball for more details. Susan will manage this project in the interim.FMI: phone 942-5741; [email protected]

Meeting RefreshmentsTo kick off the 2011-2012 SAGHS year, Martha Dolliver, Hospitality Coordinator asks that everyone bring refreshments for the first meeting. As a reminder of how our refreshment schedule works, everyone brings refreshments in September (our kick-off meeting), for our Christmas party in December, and at the last meeting in May. Each of the remaining meetings will have a “meeting hospitality committee” of 8 to 10 persons (6 hospitality committees in all). One person is a meeting coordinator that sets-up, cleans-up, and calls the others to remind them to bring food. The other committee members for that month each bring enough refreshments to serve snacks for 12 or so people. We have enough members that everyone can serve only once on a “meeting hospitality committee.”A sign-up sheet will be available at the first meeting. Please plan to help out - it’s going to take all of us to make this work!If you can help with set-up and/or clean-up at our first meeting on Tuesday, September 6, please call Martha Dolliver at 896-2385 or 234-2001 or e-mail [email protected] to volunteer. You will bless her greatly by helping out!

New Tom Green County Marriage Book Released!SAGHS is pleased to announce the release of our latest book, Marriage Records of Tom Green County, Texas, Books A-D, 1875 - 1914. Nearly 3,000 marriage records are included in this publication along with name of the marriage officiant. A separate listing of officiants is included with the number of marriages the officiant conducted and the range of dates that the officiant performed marriages recorded in Tom Green county. As the handwriting was difficult to read in many of the records and spelling varied for some names each time they were recorded, each variation is included in the marriage record abstraction. A full name index includes all names including variations, officiants, and witnesses, if provided. In addition, almost 1,400 licenses for those marriages recorded in Books A - D remain unclaimed and are housed at the West Texas Collection under the guardianship of SAGHS. Each marriage that has an unclaimed license is noted in the book and a separate index is included for the bride and groom in the unclaimed license. These unclaimed marriage licenses are available for adoption. Check to see if you have a relative who neglected to claim their marriage license once it was recorded in the marriage book. Marriage Records of Tom Green County, Texas, Books A-D also includes images of several unclaimed marriages that show the various forms used by Tom Green County from 1875 to 1914. The first license issued in Tom Green County is shown, written in hand on lined paper with a handwritten seal enclosing the words “seal ordered.” Unclaimed licenses may be adopted from the West Texas Collection by contacting Peg Gordon or the West Texas Collection. Susan Ball reports that she found the license of her husband’s great aunt while verifying the abstracted list of unclaimed marriages with Peg Gordon. As this great aunt had no children, Susan happily adopted the license. Those adopting licenses are required to provide their name and contact information.

Susan Ball Named TSGS District 15 Representative

Susan Ball has recently been elected interim District 15 Representative for the Texas State Genealogical Society. The district representative acts as liaison between partner societies and TSGS, encourages membership in TSGS, and promotes TSGS programs and activities to the genealogical societies within their district. “I am delighted to be serving in this capacity,” said Susan, “and looking forward to sharing with SAGHS the benefits of membership in TSGS and the fantastic genealogy convention planned the first weekend of November in Houston.”According to Susan, a key benefit to joining TSGS is support for Texas Records Preservation and Access. TSGS Board members testify before the State Legislature when bills are introduced that affect the access genealogists have to records at the local and state level. In addition, TSGS funds grants to preserve records at the local and state level so that Texas genealogists continue to have access to critical records groups.

Using ILL and PERSI to Expand Your Family Research.” Drawing on 35 years of experience as a librarian, Karen shares how to locate and obtain genealogical sources using the Interlibrary Loan system and the Periodical Source Index.  Although still rather new to the field of genealogical research, she is very knowledgeable about researching in  books and periodicals, having been a reference librarian in both public and university libraries.

Peg Gordon will discuss the surprising details that can be found in tax records in “More than Numbers: Tales from Tax Rolls.” Tax records, when used with other sources, are invaluable for verifying and expanding your ancestor’s story. Peg, an expert genealogist, has

over 22 years of hands-on experience in researching genealogy and has researched extensively in a variety of sources including tax records. In “Turning Head Counts into Ancestors: R e s e a r c h i n g p r e - 1 8 5 0 C e n s u s Enumerations” Susan Ball shares techniques and worksheets for tracing your ancestors through the intimidating 1790 to 1840 censuses. From years of experience as an engineer in database development, Susan applies her knowledge of databases and census research to illuminate the mysteries of the pre-1850 censuses. We’ve got an abundance of “can’t miss” events scheduled for this genealogy year, starting with the Genealogy Fair. Some lucky person is going to win a free World Deluxe subscription to Ancestry - it might as well be you! The Genealogy Fair is quickly followed by our first meeting of 2011-2012, Saturday Genealogy Classes on September 10, the Permian Basin Genealogical Society’s Fall Workshop, and more. Plan now to attend our Fall Workshop on October 8, featuring exciting speakers on fascinating topics. With any luck, we’ll be nearly rained out as we were last year! I could do without the tornado siren, though. The Texas State Genealogical Society hosted a partner society sharing session last weekend at which Lisa Mahler (our new SAGHS Board member) and I learned a lot about what TSGS is doing for Texas genealogists. One exciting project involves partnering with FamilySearch.org to index the Texas tax rolls from 1836 to 1910. Volunteers sign on to index the tax rolls through Family Search’s indexing program. If you are interested in helping, go to https://familysearch.org/volunteer/indexing , click on “Getting Started,” and follow the instructions. You can specify the project you want to work on (i.e., Texas Tax Rolls); however, the counties are assigned randomly. This genealogy year is packed with events and opportunities for you to learn more about genealogy research and find a new generation of ancestors. There are plenty of opportunities for giving back through volunteering. Please don’t be shy - we’d love to have your help! Susan E. Ball
