Thanks to Our May Luncheon Sponsors:
Each year, our Chamber acknowledges the economic impact of tourism on our community during the Tourism Awards Luncheon. During this year’s awards luncheon, we will also hear from fea-tured speaker Scott Joslove. Scott Joslove has served for the last nine years as President and CEO of the Texas Hotel & Lodging Association
(TH&LA). TH&LA serves over 1,750 lodging related member businesses from the smallest B&B properties to the largest convention center hotels. During his tenure, TH&LA has twice been recognized for having the Best Governmental Affairs Program of any hotel association in the nation. TH&LA also was recognized for having the best Membership and Educational program in the nation. Since joining TH&LA, Mr. Joslove has successfully led the effort to defeat legislative initiatives that would have saddled lodging operators with additional surcharges, taxes, and burdensome regulations. Scott has a Masters degree in Public Administration and has been a licensed attorney for 20 years. Prior to join-ing TH&LA, he served as Chief of Municipal Affairs for
the Texas Attorney General and as First Assistant General Counsel for the Texas Municipal League. Please join us for this interesting program and awards luncheon. Call the Chamber to register today!

Business After Hours Sponsored by
Great networking with fellow Chamber members
Tuesday, May 26th ~ 5-6:30 p.m.
Location: Fort Concho 630 S. Oakes Barracks 5-6 Courtyard off of Henry O. Flipper St.
Stacie Elkins Chairman of the Board
Thanks to all of you for your participation, support, and cooperative efforts through the Chamber already this year. We’re into the middle “third” of the year already, so let’s take a quick recap of April and a broad look at May and beyond. We packed out Bentwood Country Club for our April Economic Awards Luncheon sponsored by AEP Texas and The Bank & Trust. Keynote speaker Greg Wortham of the West Texas Wind Energy Consortium gave a comprehensive and interesting overview of the wind energy industry in our area and region. Members also enjoyed hearing about the achievements of expansion award winners Ac-count Control Technology, Superior Services, VisiCom, and Winger Machine and Tool, along with Special Economic Recognition to Multi-Chem and the Community Service Award to the San Angelo Independent School District. Celebrate San Angelo reports included the San An-gelo Stock Show & Rodeo, and San Angelo State Park. Members liked the picturesque setting for networking at the April 28 Business After Hours hosted by Angelo Apartment Movers at Cain’s Cove, Lake Nasworthy. Also during April, the Chamber hosted an orientation stressing member benefits for new and existing members, co-sponsored human resource training regarding substance abuse in the workplace, hosted the Statewide Texas Travel Counselors Conference, resumed the monthly Goodfellow windshield tours, participated in the dedication of the new $4.8 million chapel at Goodfellow, hosted two days of SBDC-sponsored business advising at the Chamber office, and prepared for so many activities and events you’ll experience in coming months (whew!). The month capped off with a Chamber-led trip to Washington DC working on current and future priorities for Goodfellow Air Force Base, Angelo State University, and the San Angelo community. More details on this effort will follow soon. Take note of a few of the opportunities available to you THIS MONTH:
The May 12 monthly luncheon at the Fort Concho Stables will feature a tourism theme, highlighted by remarks from Scott Joslove, President of the Texas Hotel & Lodging Asso-ciation. The luncheon will be sponsored by the Concho Valley Tennis Association, Qual-trust Credit Union, and Staybridge Suites, and reservations may be made by calling 655-4136 ext. 223, or online at www.sanangelo.org.
May’s Business After Hours is also hosted by historic Fort Concho, on Tuesday, May 26, from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
Sign up to volunteer or become a sponsor of the Goodfellow Appreciation Day scheduled Saturday, May 16, or the Showdown in San Angelo Drag Boat Races June 26-28.
Brainstorm ideas with a trained business advisor from ASU’s Small Business Develop-ment Center with an appointment at the Chamber on May 11. Call the Chamber office at 655-4136 to arrange your scheduled time.
Visit the firefighting equipment museum and enjoy a windshield tour of Goodfellow Air Force Base at 10 a.m. on Friday, May 29. Advance reservations are required: 655-436.
Please join us as we continue to Celebrate San Angelo in 2009, and call us when we may assist you.

From the Economic Development Division
Over 200 people attended the annual Economic Development Awards luncheon on April 14th at Bentwood Country Club. A special thanks to Fred Key, Chair of the Economic Development Council, for presenting the awards to our recipients. The featured speaker was Greg Wortham, Executive Director of the Great Plains Energy Alliance, the Texas Wind Energy Clear-inghouse, and the West Texas Wind Energy Consortium. His experience includes more than 25 years of experience in en-ergy, rural development, legislative action, public relations, and energy & environmental policy. Mr. Wortham addressed the wind energy industry in West Texas. Four industry expansion awards were presented.
Superior Services began providing services to the Con-cho Valley in 2002 with 3 employees providing plumbing, heating, and air conditioning services. From 2007 to 2008, Superior Services had a 40 percent increase in sales, 194 percent increase in square footage, and a 22 percent in-crease in employment. With the purchase of Simmons Huggins Appliance, they added appliance sales and service, and opened an expanded showroom. Owners Monty Greathouse, Philip Zapata, Terry Swanson, and Greg McCall accepted their award. Account Control Technology provides loan repayment outsourcing service for the United States Department of Education, state guarantors, private student loan lenders, and numerous colleges and universities across the country. Moving to their new building in 2008 increased their square footage by 478 percent – from 3,200 to 18,512
square feet. Employment increased from 24 in 2007 to 65 in 2008 resulting in a 170% increase. ACT was also recently rec-ognized for a second consecutive year by the INC 5000 as one of the fastest growing businesses in the nation. President Don Taylor accepted their award. VisiCom offers a variety of telecommunications services customized to fit your business. VisiCom is an authorized reseller of the Nortel phone system, and a premium solutions provider for Verizon. They provide regional and national networking for business with Verizon service. VisiCom almost doubled their square footage in 2008 to house the additional 9 employees that were hired – a 180% increase in employment. Sales in 2008 reached $2.7 million with projected sales for 2009 reach-ing $4 million. Scott Gibbs accepted their award on behalf of their staff. Winger Machine and Tool has been servicing the Concho Valley for over 20 years with a full service machine shop. With the purchase of another local business, they now manufacture percussion hammers, pistons, and bits. Their products are shipped all over the United States and overseas. Winger Machine and Tool had a 311% increase in sales, 150% increase in square footage, and 300% increase in employment from 2007 to 2008. Owner Mark Winger accepted their award. The Chamber honored 2 organizations that made a significant economic impact to our community: The Special Economic Impact Award is presented to an individual or business that has had a positive impact on our com-munity’s economy. Multi-Chem moved its corporate headquarters to San Angelo in 2004. They are the leader in oil and gas production chemical treatments and gas enhancement programs, providing oil field products, gas well treatments, and pipe-line solutions to enhance production. Multi-Chem acted as a Heritage Sponsor at the San Angelo Stock Show and Rodeo. They will be the presenting sponsor at the 2009 San Angelo Symphony’s July 3rd Pops Concert, an annual event that draws around 35,000 people to San Angelo, a significant contribution to the economic vitality of our community. Jorge Velarde, CFO, accepted their award. The outstanding community service award is presented to an individual or business that has provided excellence in our
community through service. This year we recognized the San Angelo Independent School District. In 2008, voters passed a
$117 million bond that will impact 12 campuses. The school board unanimously approved the construction of a new field
house with no tax increase or bond election; the $6 million facility will be 29,000 square feet. SAISD earned the highest fi-
nancial accountability rating – superior achievement – for the 6th year in a row. The PAYS school reopened and graduated
18 students in December 2008, while 73 students graduated from the Night School program, ranging in age from 18-70.
Twenty one of 23 campuses received Gold Performance recognition from the Texas Education Agency. Superintendent Dr.
Carol Ann Bonds accepted the award for the SAISD.
Congratulations to all of these recipients, and thank you for your efforts in growing the San Angelo economy.

Texas Travel Counselors Convention a Great Success
The Texas Travel Counselors Annual Convention, which took place in San Angelo in late April, was a huge success and loads of fun for all involved. Approximately 200 peo-ple attended this year’s event. Convention participants learned about all that San Angelo and the surrounding areas have to offer. The study tour visited many San An-gelo attractions, as well as Paint Rock, Christoval, Menard, Eldorado and Fort McKavett. The Counselors will now find it easier to promote San Angelo to potential tourists when they visit the many welcome/visitors cen-ters across the state. Thank you to everyone who helped make the convention a great success!
