Week 6, Term 1
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
The NSW Department of Education is working closely with the NSW Ministry of Health in
response to the unfolding international COVID-19 (formerly referred to as Novel Coronavirus)
situation.
Further travel restriction
Effective 1 March 2020 the Federal Government has issued a travel ban on foreigners coming to
Australia from Iran. Only Australian citizens and permanent residents coming from Iran will be
allowed entry to Australia, and from 1 March they are required to self-isolate for a period of 14
days after departing Iran consistent with the restrictions for those entering from China.
Additionally, Australians have been advised NOT to travel to Iran.
Updated advice from the NSW Government for parents and affected staff regarding COVID -19
is:
• Any student or staff member who has been in, or transited through, mainland China (not just
Hubei province) or has been in Iran is excluded from work, school or child care services for 14
days from the date they left mainland China or Iran (as the COVID-19 incubation period can be
as long as two weeks).
• Any confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded until they are medically cleared to return.
• Close contacts of a confirmed case of COVID-19 will be excluded for 14 days since last contact
with the confirmed case.
• Students and staff who have returned to Australia from mainland China or Iran more than 14
days ago and have shown no symptoms are able to return to school.
The NSW Ministry of Health has processes to identify any close contacts of cases confirmed in
Australia. Advice about not attending school would be provided to these close contacts by the
NSW Ministry of Health.
Consistent with current guidelines, students who are unwell with respiratory illness should
remain at home until symptoms resolve. In accordance with the NSW Department of Education ’s
current practice, if any student becomes unwell, the school will implement infection control
guidelines and follow the advice provided by the NSW Ministry of Health as appropriate.
Maintaining good hygiene standards is an important way to reduce the risk of acquiring and
spreading respiratory infections. Parents and caregivers are asked to promote good hygiene,
Samuel Terry Public School ~ Developing 21st Century Learners ~ Page 2
including handwashing with soap as handwashing is the single most effective way to reduce the
spread of germs that cause respiratory disease.
The NSW Ministry of Health has advice and resources about COVID-19 in English and Chinese.
The NSW Department of Education will continue monitoring the COVID-19 situation and provide
parents and caregivers with updated information about the virus.
Young Leaders Day
Mrs Osborne and I had the pleasure of
accompanying our school captains and
prefects to the Young Leaders Day
Conference at Darling Harbour International
Convention Centre on Monday. All of the
speakers were very engaging and gave some
great advice to our student leaders about
how to approach their leadership roles and to
make a positive difference to the lives of
other members of the school community.
The speakers involved included Erin Molan,
Rove McManus and Bianca Chatfield.
P & C Meeting
The Parents and Citizens Association Annual General Meeting will be held in the staff room on
Monday, March 9. The meeting will commence at 7pm will all positions on the P & C Executive
being declared vacant and elections for office bearers for 2020 will be held. The AGM will then
be followed by a general meeting. All are welcome to attend.
Maths Deadlys
It was great to see a number of our Aboriginal students participate in the ‘Maths Deadlys’ held at
Cranebrook High School. As part of this friendly competition, our students undertook
mathematical tasks, often working collaboratively to solve problems and utilising quick recall of
number facts to provide answers. Congratulations to all students on representing our school so
responsibly.
Penrith Zone Swimming Carnival
Well done to all of our students who represented our school at the Penrith Zone Swimming
Carnival at Penrith Pools last week. Apart from the tremendous performances of our
competitors, I commend the behaviour of all of our students who attended. Thank you to all of the
parents and caregivers who enthusiastically cheered the team on throughout the day.

EARLY STAGE ONE NEWS
Welcome to Week 6! We are officially halfway through Term One and we are so very proud of how all
Kindergarten children have transitioned to big school!
Kindergarten are continually encouraged and explicitly taught how to be SAFE, RESPONSIBLE and
RESPECTFUL learners that follow teacher’s instructions continually.
We encourage all learners to be kind and speak nicely to one another – this includes to teachers.
Speaking disrespectfully to teachers and ignoring teacher’s instructions will not be tolerated. It would
be greatly appreciated if at home this could be reiterated.
Rough play is not tolerated at Samuel Terry Public School. If a child is found to be playing rough with
other students, there will be a consequence for their actions.
It would be appreciated if parents could reinforce the ideas that at school we
* Keep our hands and feet to ourselves
* Follow all teacher’s instructions
* Use kind words to others
No rough play

BEST START PARENT FEEDBACK
Early next week, your child will bring home their Best Start Parent Feedback Report.
This report gives you an insight into what your child displayed when they participated in the Best Start As-
sessment in both literacy and numeracy and what their teacher has been explicitly teaching in class time.
HOME READING, SIGHT WORDS
Please revise your child’s sight words and read with your children at least every other night.

STAGE ONE NEWS
Easter Hat Parade
The 2020 Easter Hat Parade is scheduled for Tuesday 7th April (week 11). All K-2 students are required
to make an Easter hat or mask at home in preparation for the parade.
Some ideas for hats/masks are:
bunny ears hat bunny mask hot cross bun hat decorated straw hat character mask Easter egg hat
Remember, these are only suggestions. You and your child can create any type of hat, mask or even
bonnet. Let your imagination run wild!
Raffle tickets and notes will be sent home shortly to provide you with more information about the annual
Easter Hat Parade.
Home Reading
Your child should have their own Read Every Day (R.E.D.) folder by now. This is a red booklet used to
log the title of different texts that your child has read at home. Your child is encouraged to view, read and
comprehend a range of fiction and non-fiction texts both in the classroom and at home. You can support
your child’s fluency and use of comprehension skills by reading with your child every night and asking
them questions which promotes their understanding of texts.
Here are some questions that you could ask your child:
What is the purpose of this text (to inform or to entertain)?
What do you predict this text will be about?
What happened at the beginning, middle and end of the story?
Is there a problem in the story? If so, what is the problem?
What is the solution to the problem in the story? Can you think of another solution?
Is this a fiction or non-fiction text? How do you know?
Please refer to the Read Every Day folder for additional questions and activity ideas you could use to
promote your child’s reading.
Fun Fact: A small amount of reading each day makes an incredible difference! (Nagy and Herman,
1987)
Thank you for your ongoing support with your child’s learning and development.

Student leadership roles:
Congratulations to all of the Stage 3 students who received their leadership

house captains and vice-captains, SRC representatives and library monitors accept their badges in front
of their peers and pledge to lead by example by encouraging fair play and sportsmanship, support their
peers and speak on behalf of students during SRC meetings to make our school an even better place for
all students. Each of these roles come with great responsibility and we know each of these students will
do a wonderful job representing our school.

Year 5 Graffiti Education:
Illegal graffiti is a highly destructive problem which affects the entire community. It has
damaging economic, social and environmental consequences and costs tax payers and
individuals many millions of dollars each year to police and clean up. Year 5 will be ex-
ploring the issues of illegal graffiti in an educational incursion this Thursday 5 th March.
The program is delivered by leading educationalists Warner Youth Education, and in-
forms young people about the legal, social and personal consequences of graffiti. If you
have any questions about the program please speak to your child’s class teacher.
Online Safety – Police School Liaison Officer Visit:
It has been brought to our attention that there have been a few incidents that have taken place over social
media of late. We would like to remind students that they are expected to respect their peers and other community members, and that any forms of bullying behaviours, including online (cyber) bullying are unac-ceptable. On Wednesday 11th March the Police School Liaison Officer will be visiting our school and
speaking to all stage 3 students about appropriate use of social media and cyber bullying. To coincide with this presentation, we would appreciate it if you could talk to your child about the appropriate use of social
media. Below are some tips to assist you to have a positive conversation with your child. As children start to navigate the online world and interact with others more independently, they are more likely to be exposed to risks of bullying or unwanted contact, accidentally coming across inappropriate con-tent or racking up bills through in-app purchases. Your guidance can help them be aware of the risks and understand what is expected of them. And let them know you are always there to support them. For kids aged 5 to 12, it is important to: Keep the computer or device in an area of your home that can be supervised. And check in regularly
with your child to see what they are viewing. Stay engaged with their online activity. If they agree, consider setting up your own accounts with the
sites they use most so you can see how they work and understand the risks. Explore the online world with them to help establish that this is not just a solitary activity. Play games
with them. Do a creative project together. Think about social media readiness. Most social media sites require users to be at least 13 years of
age before they can register, although some sites are created especially for children under 13. Encourage respect and empathy. Teach them to avoid sharing or posting things that may upset others.
Good habits start young. Start building resilience. Teach your child that there are ways they can deal with material that worries
or frightens them. This includes immediately telling you or another trusted adult of any concerns or un-comfortable material.
Encourage them to learn about online safety.

Samuel Terry Public School Newsletter
Review your rules as your child grows older. Be clear about how much time they can spend online, the apps they can use, the websites they can
visit and what they can share or post online. Technology tips for parents of kids 5 to 12: Ensure your own devices are protected by a password or pin, so your child cannot accidentally
come across inappropriate content. Use parental control tools appropriate for the age and experience of your child. Be upfront about
this and get your child on board. Let them know that these can be reviewed and changed as they get older and they continue to demonstrate responsible behaviour.
Consider installing a ‘child-friendly’ search engine that will allow them to explore a limited number of sites.
For more information please visit www.esafety.gov.au
