Week 2, Term 2
Dear Parents and Caregivers,
We wish our Years 3 and 5 students the best of luck in their upcoming NAPLAN assessments. NAPLAN
commences on Tuesday, May 14 and concludes on Thursday, May 16. The results of the assessments will
be released in late September.
Screen Time
I recommend that all parents/carers have a look at page 12 of this newsletter. Miss Laura has written an
interesting report on the issue of appropriate levels of screen time for children. It is a very relevant and
important topic and the article provides plenty of ‘food for thought.’
Opal Card – Important information
If your child catches a bus to and from school can you please remind your child to tap on and off. It is
only through tapping on and off that the bus company can keep track of how many students are using the
service. If statistics show that not many students are tapping on and off, some services may be reduced or
cancelled.
If you wish to apply for an Opal Card, the link is as follows: https://apps.transport.nsw.gov.au/ssts/home#/
howToApply.
Mother’s Day Stall
A huge thank you goes to our dedicated group of parent helpers who organised and ran the Mother’s Day
stall this week. We really appreciate you giving up you time
for our school community.
Double Parking
Some parents have raised concerns about other parents
double parking on the side road (next to the staff car park)
during pick up and drop off times. This practice not only
holds up the traffic, it endangers the safety of children who
are getting out of the car.
At the upcoming P & C meeting, there will be another
discussion about ideas for alleviating the traffic situation.
P & C Meeting
The next P & C meeting will be held at the school next Monday, May 13 at 7.30pm. All are welcome to attend.

Does your child catch a school bus? Help them keep it!
Busways Group Pty Ltd
5 Bridge St, Pymble NSW 2073
www.busways.com.au
As the bus operator that providing your child's school bus services, we're asking for your help getting
your child to use their Opal card on every bus trip.
Since the introduction of the School Opal card in 2016, school bus patronage data has significantly
dropped. This is not reflected in the number of students actually travelling on our buses for various
reasons a large number of students are consistently not using their Opal cards as they should be.
Opal data gathered by tapping on and off is used by transport planners and service schedulers to
design the bus network that best serves the community utilising the resources available.
If students don't tap on and off then school bus services will appear underutilised and may be
considered for cancellation based on low passenger numbers.
Please help us reinforce the message that tapping on and off every bus journey with an Opal card is
essential to travel on the bus. This will ensure school services continue to be planned for the
students that use it, providing the journey to school your children depend on.
To help us achieve this, please talk with your child:
• Ask them if they tap on and off the bus with their Opal card.
• If they do, congratulate them for doing the right thing and talk about why it's important.
• If they sometimes don't or never do, ask them why.
o Are they confused about why they have to? Talk about why it's important, and that
every tap tells the bus planners that the bus is needed.
o Do they forget? Help them find a way to remember, such as getting into the habit of
getting their Opal card out as soon as they arrive at the bus stop or bus line.
o Is their Opa I card at the bottom of their bag? Help find a handier place to keep it.
o Are they influenced by friends or peers that don't tap? Talk about how they like to
travel on the bus with their friends and how tapping is what keeps the service
running.
o Have they lost their Opal card? To order a new Opal card visit www.opal.com.au.
If there's another reason that you'd like to discuss with Busways, please contact us at
[email protected]. We are happy to listen and do what we can to help your child feel
comfortable using their Opal card.
Thank you for helping us to best serve your school community.

the comp for the first time in ten years and I didn’t concede a goal during the comp. I was selected to try out for the Sydney West team and made it into the team. Now I am going to another comp in Bathurst on 28th ,29th and 30th.
Mason J H
On Monday was the Penrith district touch football event. We played 9 games for our pool, a semi-final and a grand final. The girls only lost 1 game all day! Unfortunately the girls lost the grand final 1 nil.
Sienna, Anthea, Grace and I were all in the team. We had a presentation at the end of the day. Sienna and I made the Sydney West team and we’re so happy. Jack A played in the Penrith district boys team. We all had lots of fun.

‘Dance Off’ Dance Camp 2019
Last week, four selected senior students from Samuel Terry once again took part in the Department of Education
‘Dance Off’ Dance Camp.
Our amazing young dancers, Madison A, Grace B, Finnlay B and Tahlia G, represented our school with pride and
participated with excellence throughout the camp. The girls had the opportunity to partake in a wide variety of
dance and creative art workshops which were led by professional dance teachers and choreographers.
The girls also got to experience the true sense of camp life by making new friends, cooking for their fellow
campers and no doubt enjoying some late night lolly eating. After the three days at camp, the students then
performed a small concert for family and teachers that truly showcased what they had learnt throughout the camp
and the fun that was had by all.
It was a pleasure to watch our students perform and receive a certificate of excellence in dance and it was an extra
special surprise to see our very own Grace receive a distinguished award in hip-hop.
Congratulation girls, you were all outstanding!
Mrs Shaylor
I went to dance camp to represent Samuel Terry. It was my first time going to dance camp. After we signed up we
went to our room. I went with four other girls, Grace, Maddie, Tahlia and Hannah. Our first class was lyrical. It
was so much fun! After that we had jazz which was my fav. We also did Hip-hop, Glee club, and musical theatre.
It was so fun to learn from professional dancers.
Finnlay B
Hi my name is Grace and I’m going to tell you about my experience at dance camp. We firstly got our cabins and
believe me you don’t want a room next to our teacher. We had our first class lyrical and I loved it, we learnt our
dance from Evie and her choreography was so good. During dance camp I met so many friends and all the students
were so nice and friendly although being competitive. I was so privileged to represent our school and I was so
honoured to take home a hip-hop award. I went with Finnlay, Tahlia, Maddison and was glad to include everyone.
We did Jazz, hip-hop, lyrical, and theatre. Working with everyone was super fun and I am glad I was chosen to go.
Grace B
Last Wednesday I went to dance camp. It was my first time going so I was a little scared. I loved learning combos
from professional dancers. Everyone was so friendly even if you didn’t know them. The dance styles that we did
were lyrical, jazz, hip hop, commercial jazz, musical theatre and our selective groups which I chose tap. We also
had choreography groups. We got into our groups and we would get a set of instructions which made up a dance.
Then we performed all the combos that we learnt. It was so fun performing all the dances. I am so glad I got the
opportunity to go to dance camp with all my friends.
Madison A

Counsellors Corner
Screen Time –Digital Nutrition
As the school counsellor, I am often asked by parents about how best to manage screen time. The Australian Gov-
ernment Department of Health states ‘Watching TV and playing computer games are common activities for kids
BUT kids who spend long periods of time inactive are more likely to have poor physical, social and intellectual de-
velopment’.
When managing screen time for both ourselves and our children, it is important to consider what content is being
watched or played, when this content is being watched or played and overall duration of screen time.
The recommended duration of screen time for children as per the Department of Health website.
When allowing children to access screen time, including Ipads, phones, T.V and other electronic devices, it’s im-
portant to consider the concept of ‘digital nutrition’. Similar to the way we understand nutrition for our bodies, we
need to be considerate of the nutrition we feed our minds, especially our children’s minds. Therefore the content of
what our children are watching is significant and has the potential to have detrimental effects on their functioning if
inappropriate for their age. Classifications are provided for all T.V. shows and movies that are aired on television,
this provides guidelines to what children should be watching. However YouTube has provided a very open and un-
filtered avenue for children to explore. Parental controls and Kids YouTube are not enough to ensure that our chil-
dren are watching appropriate content. Quite often inappropriate images, audio or video content is embedded with-
in a seemingly innocent child’s video. It can be helpful to only allow screen time in open living areas where parents/
guardians are within range to hear and check in on what children are watching. Inappropriate content can cause
significant effects on how well your child sleeps, interacts with others, focuses throughout the day, understands and
feels about the world as well as develops suitable empathetic understanding.
The time of day in which your child has screen time is also important. It is recommended to avoid any screen time
up to an hour before sleep. The screen emits light that affects our brain in different ways. It affects the production
of melatonin which is the hormone responsible for controlling the sleep/wake cycle or the circadian rhythm. Reduc-
tions in melatonin make it difficult to fall asleep and maintain deep sleep. Quite often people say that watching T.V
or movies on the Ipad helps them to fall asleep. Screen time provides a distraction from thinking about the chaos of
life and the endless list of things to be done, it allows us to escape into a different realm and be caught up in a story,
but it can lead to eye strain and blurred vision. This may explain why you end up needing to close your eyes and go
to sleep, however, areas of your brain are still active and hence influence your sleep patterns. This then affects your
functioning the next day. Quality sleep is essential for optimal functioning especially for children.
A helpful screen time plan can be found at the following link. This can be used as an agreement between yourself
and your child about the management of appropriate screen time.
