    SAMPLING MANAGEMENT IN APPARELS

Before a product is sold in the market, it must be designed manufactured and

    distributed.

Product development is the activity related to the design and manufacture of

    a new product.

The product development cycle begins when the designer prepares design

sketches. The design manager then selects the potential styles for

    development of the prototype.

The buyer prepares a buying plan.

With the selected styles, the buyer approaches the merchandiser to begin the

    sampling.

The objective for sampling is to study : feasibility of marketing, sales, bulk

    production, initial quotations.

    Sample Development - Options:

    1. Buyers own design room

    2. Suppliers sample room

    3. Samples developed by other /bought from market

    4. Sourcing offices design room

    5. Design Studio/freelancer , design consultant

Sample development of the samples designed in buyers own design room:

Initial samples have been conceptualized by the designer based on the

review of market status . The concepts /forecasts to be pursued for the

    upcoming season.

Colors, fabrics, textures, silhouettes, silhouettes, design features, fit, fall,

    look, price points.

Once the buyer/designer decide the styles they may get the same stitched in

their own design studio, the samples are then sent out to the sourcing

country for prototyping. The sourcing country /manufacturer will be decided

based on the proficiency in terms of fabric, sewing, value addition, costing,

    quality, lead time.

These samples are prototyped by the manufacturer and sent to the buyer

along with the buyers original sample.

OROn receiving the tech pack or development packages from buyers the

manufacturers develop the samples as per the specifications and send to the

    buyer.

All samples have a counter sample made to be kept back for reference.

Every sample is sent along with a detailed sample sheet consisting of

Sketch, measurement, specifications. A copy of which is kept with the

    manufacturer.

    development of samples

The development cycle begins 3 12 months ahead of the selling season.

This depend son the scale /kind of business of the Brand.

This is done in advance so that the samples reach the design team when they

are finalizing on their concepts, OR in case the buyers/designers are

traveling to the exporting countries .

To prepare samples exporter should have :

A product development team - develops concepts by studying fashion

forecasting (colors, fabrics, textures, silhouettes, design details, style details)

sample development , sourcing, price points.

After the buyers meetings/communication over phone/e-mail is over:

The merchandiser sends a recap of the points discussed and agreed/disagreed

    on. This should have ;

    Style No

    Description

    Fabric

    Points discussed

    Points agreed/disagreed

    Deadlines set.

As soon as the buyers agrees on all details as okay, the sampling starts.

Every third day the status of the report should be sent to the buyer in an

excel format. Which has Style no, Description, Fabric/Trim details,

Changes if any, Date of delivery( expected/actual date), Courier details.

This helps the buyer to track the samples and plan presentation of the

samples expected from the manufacturers end. All the samples should have a

counter sample. Copy of the style sheet also kept along with counter sample.

    PRE PRODUCTION SAMPLE/SEALER SAMPLE

When the prototype samples are approved , when all the bulk fabric is in

house, when all the sizes are approved by buyer on fit/trims/finish/fabric/

packing trims then the pre-production/sealer sample is made using all the

approvals this sample is a representative of what the actual production

pieces are going to be like.

    Garment Testing Samples GTS

These samples are made simultaneously with the pre-production samples to
