yiLiteracy• © 2016, Grades 9-10

iLiteracy is a new series of four course specific resources that cover 100% of

Ontario’s Grade 9 and 10 English curriculum expectations.

Each resource contains engaging Canadian contemporary short literary works

in a variety of text forms supported by 10 key literacy skills.

Ú Three-part literacy skills lessons are the same for both the applied and academic resources at each grade level to ensure students develop the skills they need to succeed

Ú Skills lessons and the literary selections also support OSSLT prep

Ú Collections are organized by having each skill lesson followed by a few selections of literature that can be used to apply the skill

There are various pathways through these resources:

1. You can follow the sequencing of the book

2. Or you can chart your own course to meet your students’ needs by

self-selecting either the literature or the skills lesson

iWonder 8 and 9 is a new, engaging series published specifically to support the

new British Columbia English Language Arts 8 and 9 curricula. Each resource is

designed around an inquiry framework, with a definition of inquiry in student-

friendly language and a detailed graphic organizer showing an inquiry process.

This is followed by two lessons:

Ú A modelled inquiry lesson with two BC students sharing their insights on

their own inquiry and their final products

Ú A guided inquiry lesson to support a gradual release model

Each student resource also includes a range of approximately 25 short,

contemporary literary texts, organized in five topics that support guided or

independent inquiries. Over 20% of the literary selections are written by

Canadian Aboriginal authors (many of whom are from BC).

Each selection includes “Before, During, and After” instruction, which is

aligned with the new BC Big Ideas, as well as the Curricular Competency and

Content Learning Standards.

The Teacher Resource contains support for all of the questions and activities,

as well as ideas for assessment and how to introduce inquiry into the ELA

classroom.
