The past twelve months has seen both the diversification, and level of progress, within the Sammy D Foundation reach its highest point since inception in mid 2008. What began as a group of committed family and friends determined to turn the tragedy of Sam’s death into something positive, has evolved into a highly functional, well recognised and professional harm prevention foundation, assisting and reaching out to thousands of young South Australians. Board The strengthening of our board’s capabilities with skills covering corporate, community, education, finance, sport, leadership and governance, provides a strong platform for the sustained growth of our foundation programs. The board has delivered a clear three-year strategic plan and is committed to its successful execution. Meaningful effort has been applied by the board over the past year in developing and embedding, policies, procedures and appropriate governance to ensure the foundation can deliver our strategic plan on an ongoing basis. Financials Our ability to grow is reliant primarily on funding due to the thorough and expandable framework now embedded in the business. We have strong contacts in community, welfare and education, and have built meaningful relationships with key personnel in these areas who can assist the

foundation as it grows. The foundation is financially secure with its operations overseen by two CPA’s who sit on the board. Our ability to secure grants and tenders throughout the year, despite the infancy of the foundation, is testament to the diligent and thorough framework that encompasses our operations.

Programs

Sammy D Impact Our Impact presentations – Sam’s story, has now been heard by over 7000 South Australians, including (and primarily) teenage school children, teachers, parents, youth workers and coaches. These presentations and the follow on workshops have provided the foundation (through its mandatory evaluation process) with some of the most tangible evidence that sharing Sam’s story has made young people think about the impact of violent behaviour in a different way. This has been a particularly rewarding outcome for everyone involved.

Sammy D Connect Social inclusion is a key outcome we are achieving through the mentoring of high risk individuals. The mentors working with these young people are in many cases friends of Sam who have completed our training program and built close connections with these disengaged youth, achieving truly uplifting results. Funding is used in many instances to provide an opening into sport and an alternate pathway. Party Wise Our safe partying strategies are about raising awareness of how to plan for a safer party, recognise warning signs and how to manage potential volatile situations. The TV campaign was highly successful and was developed with the assistance of the local university drama group. The evolution of this advertisement continues with strong input from young minds.

The certainty with which we can deliver our programs to meet the requirements of all stakeholders is a pivotal strength of the foundation. We continue to be approached by various welfare, government, social and community groups to discuss how our programs can assist the individuals and families they work with. Our results and positive outcomes are far reaching. We are proud of the number of youth who are involved in the foundation as volunteers and mentors. Not only are we reaching out and connecting with a broad range of young people, but the foundation is providing a pathway for the development, growth and employment of individuals in a very positive and rewarding manner. With some 250 volunteers involved in the foundation it is testament to the professionalism, values and belief of all involved, the positive difference that the foundation is making to the youth of South Australia.

After a year which saw many aspects of the foundation crystallise into highly functional, professional and structured disciplines, we are focused and determined to reach many more young South Australians in the years ahead, striving to always share Sam’s voice.

It feels like writing ‘what a busy year it has been’ is so cliché but...what a busy year it has been! The foundation has gone through a huge amount of growth, not only in terms of the numbers of young people we have serviced, but also in our business practises and the professional standards that have been put in place to ensure we are following a best practise model for service delivery.

In February 2011, our Executive Committee stood down after steering the foundation through its establishment, supporting Neil and I with our program development and also setting up some fantastic fundraising and volunteering principles. We would like to extend a huge thank you to the dedicated team of friends and family that believed in us and supported us during this time.

Members of the Executive Committee from June 2008 to February 2011 include: Janine Hook Christopher Reed Alex Burrows Sheree Davis Deb Mathews Natalie Hincksman Peter Hislop Natalie Charman Aimee Mitchell Nicky Kerr Cheryl Allen Matthew Verrall

The members of this committee have now joined up with our General Committee to form the Organisational Committee, which meets monthly to help support fundraising, program development and community engagement activities. We have kept this committee more like an informal group – rather than having defined structure and positions – so those who are interested can attend as little or as often as they like to keep in touch and contribute to the foundation’s activities.

The group is led by foundation staff members and is invaluable to the running of the organisation.

Our Board of Management held its first formal meeting in February and has been instrumental in the development of the foundation’s Strategic Plan and also providing support around business and program planning. The level of accountability and vision for the future is very exciting. We can now proceed with the confidence and creativity to challenge ourselves.

The foundation continues to be actively involved in the SA Mentoring Network and Youth Networks based in the south. Importantly, we have also become involved in the Playford and Eastern networks, sitting on steering committees for statewide projects run by organisations such as Red Cross and providing a representative to YACSA (Youth Affairs Council of SA). YACSA is the peak youth advocacy body in SA and having one of our young people attend their meetings provides a great opportunity for us to engage with key people from all over the state.

The activity and outcomes for all of our programs this year have been fantastic, with some key evaluations showing that we make a huge difference in the lives of young people that we come into contact with. The program reports are something we are enormously proud of. When compiling these reports, it gives us a chance to reflect on the past 3 years and assess whether our direction or vision has changed. We haven’t wavered in our resolve to achieve what many people said would be difficult, challenging and in some cases impossible.

We deliver all of our programs with passion that is unequalled and determination that has a “Failure is not an Option” attitude. The energy that is required to continue in this way would have been under threat had the foundation not made the decision to remunerate some paid staff. Since February 2011 Neil and I, Janine and Aimee have all been working 2-3 days a week paid by the foundation as well as continuing to volunteer between 10 and 25 hours every week. The move to this model has ensured longevity, not only for the organisation, but also to ourselves. We were all juggling up to 40 volunteer hours per week with the foundation as well as working elsewhere 40 hours per week to pay the bills – not sustainable in anybody’s world in the long term. We also now have 5 casually-employed Program Assistants who help us out with workshops and mentoring support. Our administrative time is kept to a minimum and we devote our time to program development, implementation and evaluation. Neil and I are enormously proud of our team and all that has been achieved in the past 12 months. We look forward to continued growth in the next 12 months with enthusiasm and excitement. They sky is the limit for the foundation and we know Sam would be enormously proud. Nat Cook & Neil Davis Joint Chief Executive

I am pleased to be able to make this report to the Sammy D Foundation members on the financial circumstances of the Foundation. The audited Financials show that the Foundation made a comfortable profit increase of 44% for the financial year. As at 30 June 2011 the Foundation had significant net assets which reflect this profit increase. The Foundation is in an excellent financial position, having increased revenue by 110% over the previous 12 months whilst being, essentially, a start up organisation. It is well placed to continue these results over the next year with the growth and development seen over the past 12 months. The Foundation has seen itself in the position for the first time of being able to provide some economic support to it’s administration and support staff who have been mostly voluntary up until this time. The Board has approved these moves and they are seen as a positive step forward with the expected extra revenue coming in estimated to cover the expense. The Foundation’s main sources of revenue are grants, charitable events, donations and paid provision of programs. Charitable events were the biggest source of income in the 2011 financial year and are expected to remain steady in 2012. Grants were the second largest contributor to income and

these are expected to grow over the coming 12 months. The corporate dollar will also be targeted in the 2012 year. Charges for programs delivered have been standardised during the year and may increase further, based on the value that the programs are delivering, judged by the positive feedback being received from the participants. Numbers of programs being delivered are also able to be increased now that the Foundation is in a position to make payments to staff which will further add to the financial position of the Foundation. The 2012 year is anticipated to be a year of positive growth and continued branding in the marketplace and this forward movement will see the Foundation remain well placed for the future.

2011 started off with our first Sammy D Foundation Rural Road trip. Across one week, seven of us travelled to the Yorke Peninsula to deliver 9 presentations and 22 workshops to 5 schools and approximately 500 students. The week was a fantastic way to spread the message to country SA. Thank you to Carol Toole, Community Mentor Coordinator from the region, for supporting our program and making this possible.

In the 12 months between July 1, 2010 and June 30, 2011, the Sammy D Impact story was presented to 70 groups. The presentation audiences have ranged from Year 3 primary students to young people in Juvenile Training Facilities as well as sporting and other community organisations.

Sporting Clubs Department of Families and Communities Community Organisations

A breakdown of venues

A review of the 2010 program, which was partly funded by the Attorney General Department’s Crime Prevention and Community Safety Grant, was completed using questionnaires with about 10 areas for feedback. These questionnaires were completed immediately following the presentation and again 3-5 months later. A snapshot of the results show:

Before to the presentation:

70% of attendees had previously used physical violence against somebody, and

62% of attendees did not realise the serious consequences of violence

After the presentation it was found that:

95% of attendees would change their use of physical violence, and

92% of attendees would try to stop their friends from using physical violence

Most importantly: up to 6 months following the presentation, the

audience is remembering the information provided in the presentation and their behaviour is still in-fluenced by Sam’s Story.

These results are a vital way of showing that the Impact Program changes the audience’s attitudes toward violence and their actions when confronted with a violent situation. This year saw the commencement of follow-up workshops, which aim to reinforce the themes of the presentation and challenge young people to consider their behaviour and its hidden consequences.

Data, such as from our evaluations mentioned previously, is vital in terms of providing statistical evidence of the program’s effectiveness. The testimonials and messages sent to us months after we have presented that really confirm the message has resonated with the young people.

We presented to a young person in June of this year and at the end of October we were sent this photograph which was taken on his way home from school. It’s nice to see our logo is recognisable in many forms.

The Connect Program is based on a vision to help at risk young people become involved in community activities and expose them to positive role models. The foundation uses a variety of ways to achieve this including one-on-one mentoring in the community and schools, group mentoring in schools and Community Residential Care (CRC) ‑ houses where young people live under guardianship care ‑ and also by financially supporting engagement with recreational activities.

Mentoring: DFC - 28% Community Service Organisations -

22% DECS - 28% Juvenile Justice - 22%

Community Engagement Funding:

DFC - 19% Community Service Organisations -

57% Juvenile Justice - 24%

There are now 50 people who have been recruited, screened for suitability, attended training and are now proud to call themselves Sammy D Mentors. Our mentors range in age from 16 to 50+ and come from a diverse range of backgrounds. In the past 12

months, we have supported 18 young people (mentees) with mostly volunteer mentors who meet with them one-on-one for between 1 and 4 hours per week. These mentoring relationships have seen increased confidence, improved behaviour, positive peer relationships, re-engagement to education and a huge amount of opportunities and new experiences for all involved – including the mentors! With the help of funding through Community Benefits SA, we have coordinated a group mentoring program in CRC, which has seen 20 volunteer mentors engage regularly with 17 young people (aged 8 – 17) over the course of the year. The primary focus of this program is to expose young people living in care to community role models to offer them valuable life skills and help them engage positively in the community upon leaving care. This has been done through play, homework club, community outings, engagement in sport and recreation, cooking, art programs and much more.

During National Youth week, 8 residents of the Noarlunga CRC Unit worked with us and Unchain My Art to produce 10 wonderful canvases, which hang in the Reynella Youth Centre. This program was supported by funding from the City of Onkaparinga. The residents then catered and hosted a gallery launch led by volunteer chef extraordinaire Sarah Bridgeland.

The event was attended by politicians, sports stars and community leaders, and was a great way to showcase these young peoples’ talents. Six volunteers now support the engagement of these young people in community activities. The foundation will continue to demonstrate that it is able to provide quality mentors to young people in care and guide them to a positive future where they contribute to their community’s and their own success.

The Sammy D Foundation started when a young boy (Sam) who died at a party when uninvited guests showed up and started trouble. Sam got hit from behind and he died instantly only kept alive by a machine so his family could say goodbye. Every year on the anniversary of Sam’s death Nat, Neil, Sam’s friends, family and volunteers go down to Port Noarlunga Jetty to release balloons and have a minute silence for Sam.

His parents, Nat and Neil, started the foundation to raise awareness in children about violence and the consequences and danger that violence can cause. Nat, Neil and the volunteers go around to schools to give presentations and also government houses where Guardianship of the Minister children live to give a presentation and organise to come regularly to support the children in need.

Sam was an SANFL player and the Sammy D Foundation strongly supports sport and helps young sport players achieve their goals, help children that want to play sports and have second hand football boots etc that they may need to play.

Nat and Neil organise to have marquees at events such as Youth Week, some Fringe events and SANFL games etc. They provide pamphlets, volunteer forms if you wish to sign up, donation boxes, do surveys and also have Sammy D Stubby holders, frangipani hair clips, bracelets, rings, necklaces etc on sale.

They provide some training for mentors which I have done. They teach you about the Guardianship children and how many of them are troubled, feel let down and that it may take a while to get them to open up and build a relationship because of trust issues they’ve had in the past and that you can’t let them down because they will rely on you to be there. Some mentors do make time to see the child they’re mentoring and then the mentors don’t show up which can be heartbreaking to the young child.

They go through the grieving process when they move into care and can often go down the wrong path.

I am a Guardianship child and I am one of the lucky ones that pulled myself up and got on the right path. Other volunteers appreciated my input and the fact that I could explain how other Guardianship children can be.

The Sammy D Foundation is an excellent foundation and I would recommend signing up to volunteer any day. Nat and Neil are wonderful people and I appreciate everything they have done for me.

DREAM IT is an extension of our relationship with Guidance Crew, a multi-cultural youth hip hop group whose mission is to build confidence and resilience amongst young people while sharing their love of dance. Members of the crew have been working with more than 20 Year 8-10 students at Parafield Gardens High School (PGHS) on a weekly basis since June. The students have built confidence and leadership skills while choreographing a dance routine that can be readily taught to primary school students. The team has visited 7 schools to facilitate dance workshops with students from Year 3-7, who will be transitioning to PGHS. When these Year 7s start at the high school, they will already have built a relationship of trust and respect with students at the school, which we hope will alleviate many of the fears and barriers to engagement during the transition to high school. This multicultural in-school transitional leadership program is something that will not only build a fantastic culture at the school, but also help to reduce bullying and other anti-social and harmful behaviours in the school community.

The Sammy D Foundation is proud to be a member of the Australian Youth Mentoring Network and the South Australian Mentoring Network

Mentoring Jesse over the last couple of months has been a win-win situation. The relationship between Mentor and Mentee develops open lines of communication and trust which solidifies on a rapport built from a solid foundation of Jesse playing football for the same club I have coached at for 9 years. The Mentor is seeing a very different relationship forming between Jesse and his Mum - one where they are talking and listening to each other more each week.

We have undertaken a number of different activities from Skate Parks to the Beach and swimming centre where Jesse swam the entire length of the pool non-stop for the first time. The excitement on his face after stating he wasn’t a good swimmer is one of the moments you just don’t forget as a youth worker.

Jesse had concern’s whether I had to be there each week. We have worked around those fears by extending sessions like a trip in to Rundle Mall to see the Guidance Crew perform, a Saturday night movie and a future Ice Skating night planned over summer.

Jesse has not been in trouble at school once since we started and takes great pride in letting me know each week. Jesse is an awesome young man with a heart of gold which I’m able to draw on to help with Jesse’s own self-belief and ultimately get to the stage where he knows he can make some good choices and not feel so pressured by his mates.

Volunteering is a great way to end the working week and can make a real difference in a young person’s life. Mark Ireson Sammy D Mentor Jesse with Aimee Mitchell getting a Sammy D Tattoo in Rundle Mall

Student placements are extremely important to the organisation as they provide opportunities to access skills, build relationships and complete tasks that are necessary for our programs. Students work in areas including research, program development and reporting. They are involved in meetings with key stakeholders in order to further develop their skills. Our most recent student is Susan Evans a Juvenile Justice student from Flinders University. During Susan’s time with us she has contributed a significant amount of work by completing a Mentor and a Mentee evaluation questionnaire as well as completing the ground work for a new Volunteer Handbook.

Susan reflects on her time with the Sammy D Foundation:

My time with the Sammy D Foundation started out through doing it as my University placement. My initial expectations were that it is was going to be like any other organisation, dreary, office-like, overly structured with programs that are nothing special.

However, I could not have been more wrong. I would need to spend a couple thousand words to simply begin to try and express what they do and why it is amazing. Every single program or initiative they do actually works. One occasion that I saw this in action was during an Impact presentation. I observed the kids that looked like bullies and saw them break down at Neil’s presentation, they were truly impacted and in fact everyone was. Even if just one kid remembers the lesson taught and it saves a single life, it is worth all the hard work.

I would (and already have) urge everyone to donate some time to help out with the fabulous work that the Sammy D Foundation does. Even if you are not concerned with facilitating the enormous social change that the foundation is achieving with disadvantaged and at risk kids, then do it at least for your own satisfaction. The time I had there was educating, rewarding and fun.

Other then a sense of pride that I was able to help the incredible Sammy D team, I gained clarification in what I want to be doing. No matter where the future takes me, I know that there will be kids out there that need desperate help, and I will be dedicated to assist them, even in the smallest ways. Out of 10 my time with the Sammy D Foundation was off the scale! Susan Evans

We are very pleased that Susan has decided to come on board as an official Volunteer. Having recently completed her Induction and Mentor training - and as soon as all of her assignments are finished - Susan is steering a music event fundraiser for early in 2012.

The last thing we would want to see is a parent too scared to let their teenagers have parties in their own home. Teenagers are incredibly social and need to have the opportunity to develop skills around hosting their friends – but they must be supported while doing this. Communication is vital in the planning of a party. While many organisations work in schools with young people to raise awareness about the risks of partying - at home and out in the community - none do it the same way. This year we have joined forces with DRUG ARM Australasia to develop the concept of Party Wise forums. These forums target families with the aim of bringing adults and teenagers together to discuss issues such as alcohol and drugs, legal issues associated with being a party host, what to do in an emergency and how to put a safer party plan into place. The forums hosted so far have seen the Sammy D Foundation, DRUG ARM, local police and Ambulance officers come together to provide sound and practical advice to both adults and teenagers alike. It is vital that everyone gets the same message and open communication is encouraged during and beyond the forum. Parents who have attended the forums have been surprised at the conversations the real-life scenarios encourage and have been grateful for the opportunity to problem solve together as a family.

Local councils such as Prospect/Walkerville and Marion have been excited by this concept and we look forward to collaborating with many more in 2012.

“The forum increased communication lines...........about how to minimize risk.......Council plans to conduct another Party Wise Forum in the future. I would highly recommend this program to other Councils and community organisations. If you want the facts, stats and leading specialise advice it’s got to be Party Wise.” – Mark Crabtree, Youth Development Officer, Prospect and Walkerville councils

Scott McBain is a hugely respected member of the entertainment industry in Adelaide as well as the director of The Post Office Production and Design. Scott came on board this year to offer his assistance with the Party Wise TV campaign as well as support our events. Using the TV commercial (TVC) that was produced in 2010 by the Flinders University Media students - as part of our volunteer recruitment campaign- Scott and his team created both a 15 and a 30 second commercial.

The revamp of the sound and addition of voiceovers at the end of the commercials, to ask people to help the foundation stop youth violence, really made them powerful. Watch out for these being played during your favourite shows and in other venues in the future! With his amazing experience, enthusiasm, commitment and awesome contacts Scott is a most welcome addition to the Sammy D family.

In February 2011, 15 year old Marcus Abraham was a targeted by bullies at a northern suburbs high school and became the victim of a king-hit incident. According to newspaper reports at the time “...the bullying continued online when he was further targeted via Facebook...” . When seeking support following these incidents, Marcus’s mother Laura contacted the Sammy D Foundation to find out how she could best support Marcus and what she could do to make a difference. Laura recently wrote to Nat and Neil with the following:

Dear Nat & Neil, ...Thank you so much for allowing me to share your story I really hope it helps other people, not just victims and their families but also helps people realise the effects of bullying and the seriousness of what can happen... As a family we are going through the healing process, the hardest thing is accepting what has happened, the justice system and dealing with our emotions. We have been truly lucky to have such a fantastic support network around us. Marcus is doing very well ... this year he has started SACE stage one and is now half way through it and has completed the compulsory subjects. At his other school he was in year 10 on a negotiated learning plan doing year 9 work and failing, now he is doing year 11 work and has passed the subjects he has done so far ... I am so very proud of him.

I would also like to take the opportunity to sincerely thank both of you for your support and kindness. We drew strength from your strength and your story and of course Sam; although we never met Sam I truly believe he was a remarkable and very special person. Your family has helped our family more than you could ever know! Kind regards, Laura Abraham

Volunteers are the face and voice of the Sammy D Foundation. Like all charities, we have relied on the dedication and diligence of our volunteers to achieve all of the success that we have been able to since our first meeting in June 2008.

To date this group have contributed a staggering 13,000 hours, which equates to approximately $325,000 of in-kind support.

In this past year the volunteers have successfully organised and hosted Rox-On - Bali Night at the Highway Hotel, the annual Comedy Gala and Golf Day as well as countless community engagement events including: 2011 National Youth Week Launch Event, SFL Grand Final Day, Community Day at South Adelaide Football Club and 2011 Sunday Mail City-to-Bay.

We value the contributions made by each and every one of our volunteers and appreciate all the time they dedicate to the cause.

The Honour Roll acknowledges some outstanding contributions.

All of our volunteers show a huge commitment to the foundation not only through the many hours spent mentoring but also by supporting the community engagement and fundraising events that we run or are involved in.

Volunteers are given a 2 hour Induction Training which includes an Introduction to the concept of Mentoring. Volunteers that want to Mentor also complete follow up training inclusive of Mentoring Principles, Child Safe Environments as well as Youth Development topics.

Not everybody wants to become involved in mentoring, which is quite alright because we have many other areas that we need assistance in. If you would like to become involved, please contact us. This year, thanks to funding support from the City of Onkaparinga Council, the Sammy D team played a major role in the launch event for National Youth Week 2011. The event held at Morton Reserve was a huge success and helped us to increase our profile as well as gather some very useful data surrounding cyber safety and cyber bullying issues.

We were well represented by a volunteer work-force of more than 20 people who had a great time interacting with the kids. The rockwall proved to be particularly popular.

This event was also a great opportunity for us to work with some old friends including Guidance Crew and Ange’s Temporary Tattoos as well as making some new ones. Southern band Exit and Pimpin Horus were a huge hit with the crowd.

We could not be happier with the success of this year’s City-to-Bay. Partnering with Sky Personal Training and with support from SA Crowns Indoor Netball Junior Development our Sammy D Team grew to 75. With specially designed team shirts we really stood out and received plenty of encouragement at most drink stations along the way. Once again with the support of many helpers there was a BBQ breakfast waiting at the end. Whether you managed the distance in 34 mins or chose a more leisurely pace of over 2 hours, as a team, over $5,000 was raised to support our programs. Well done and thank you to all who supported this event - we hope to double these numbers next year.

Continuing the theme for our ‘Rox-on’ events, being fun, laughter and spreading the Party Wise message, this year’s Bali-Night at the Highway encompassed all of these things. Thanks to the support of Christine McAuliffe from the Highway and Jetty Surf a great night was had by all who attended. Many of the ladies particularly enjoyed the presence of members from the 2011 Firefighters Calendar who helped by selling merchandise.

Rox-on will continue in 2012 with a number of events currently in the planning stage including an afternoon band event scheduled for January. Please visit our website or facebook page to keep up to date with coming events.

The Comedy Gala has grown to be our biggest fundraising event of the year. Having advertised our third annual event in the Fringe guide we happily returned to the Capri Theatre with a huge crowd of 650.

With Damian Callinan leading a line-up of 14 local and international acts including Tom Gleeson, Arj Barker, Fiona O’Loughlin, Sammy J, John Robbins, Smart Casual and David Quirk.

We are very happy to announce that the 2012 Comedy Gala will return to the Capri Theatre on the 4th March with an even bigger line-up. Keep an eye out for the Fringe Guide and check our website for details on performers.

Although heavy rains threatened, thankfully they stayed away for the foundation’s third golf day. As always the Thaxted Park golf course was in pristine condition when the 16 teams lined up to compete for the much coveted Sammy D Cup. All players were competing not only for the win but for the fantastic Ford Festiva provided by Wayne Phillis Automotive as the hole-in-one prize. Unfortunately nobody came close to winning the car - except for Wayne Phillis! Scott McBain joined us as emcee this year and was supported by comedian Michael Bowley in providing the lunchtime entertainment. Thanks to Scott’s fantastic auctioneering skill we were able to raise over $3,000 in much needed funds at auction that will go towards supporting our programs.

Congratulations to this year’s winners Ace Tree and Stump. It was fantastic to see someone who has been a supporter of the golf day since day one walk away with the win.

Craig Hinter from Lancer Beverage Systems showed what great supporter of the foundation he is and organised 5 teams for the day in addition to getting Lancer Beverage Systems on board as a major sponsor.

A huge thank you to all that played on the day and to all of our other sponsors on the day including On the Run, Magain Real Estate - Woodcroft, Cheap as Chips, Bank SA, Brighton Trophy Centre, Woodcroft Picture Framers, Southern Aluminium and Apollo Print and Promotion. The huge success of the golf day is credited to the hard work and dedication of the Golf Day Committee under the leadership of Daniel Lowe.
